The kids keep running in front of the trains! The same thing happens with cars. Either way, that is one incredible network!!!

Streetcar between Central Pointe TRAX station (where 3 of the 4 lines meet) and Sugar House historic district/restaurants/retail will have demo rides on Saturday, December 7, and open for regular service on Sunday, December 8.

I walked the route the other night and took these photos. I'll have more soon.

SLC opened the so called Sugar House tram. With a frequency of 20mins it doesnt look impressive, right?

That seems to be the best they can do on a one-track line that takes 15 minutes to ride end-to-end.

Yup, but what's the point to build a single track line? It costs fortune and gives you a poor frequence. With buses and just a fraction of the costs you can make better things with good intervals between the services. It looks like a toy to me, that SLC made there. Unless they plan to put the second track in the future and to to extend the line further east or south.

I'm sure as the area becomes more densely settled they will expand it to 2 tracks.

Well, that's the problem. The area isnt densely populated, just houses, some shops and parks. Huge distances with just few ppl living around. There is no room for condos, which would make the place more populated. That is the main problem with making good public transportation in us-cities.

If you're referring to the Sugar House Streetcar, not well. It's around 600-900 daily riders, rather than the projected 3,000.

Tanya Snyder and Jeff Wood discussed it in Episode 33 of the Talking Headways Podcast a few weeks ago and the cause-and-effect fallacies that emerge when trying to save money by beginning at reduced capacity first: initially low frequency doesn't provide much reliability, so why would more riders even use it to begin with? Who knows.

Waiting to increase service/improve infrastructure until ridership grows is like a heavier person waiting until their smaller clothes fit them better to begin reducing their calories. One directly causes the other, so don't set yourself up for failure by waiting for a goal when you've only given your hockey players one ice skate.

I'm referring to the extension of red line to Daybreak.

I bet the sugar house streetcar would do even better if it was a branch of the main north-south trunk and went all the way to downtown.

It would probably due better if it ran through a denser area and had better service...

Of course! Now the short line seems more like a cripple.
There are at least few possible options that would make the tram better.
1. make it a branch of the main LRT, but with no level crossings
2. let run the tram along the 21st. Street (then maybe along the 13th or Highlind Dr.)

It reminds me of another crippled, "orphan" branch, on the San Jose Light Rail network. If it was a one seat ride downtown people would use it and they could then close some of those hard to access stops that are in the freeway median nearby. Also the mall it connected to was probably much more relevant in the year 1991 than in 2015.

Quote:

Ridership on the Almaden Shuttle is notoriously poor. The Almaden Shuttle was proposed for cancellation in 2003 and 2004 as part of massive agency-wide service cuts as a result of the dot-com bust, especially considering that for many Almaden Valley residents who choose transit, VTA's number 13 bus duplicates the Almaden Shuttle's service (providing service to downtown San Jose via the Alum Rock–Santa Teresa line with only one transfer.[1][2] If the Almaden Shuttle was canceled, it would have been the first federally funded light rail line to ever cease service, a decision that would have repercussions throughout the country.[3] Ultimately, a decision was made to keep the shuttle and reduce service on parallel bus routes instead.
