well, actual construction didn't begin until some point last month (or maybe June?). In any case, I think they're still working on getting the pilings in, so there hasn't been much to see. I guess that'll change over the next 1-2 months ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The first real structure that will begin going up will be that viaduct over the "river."

* Some idea of the timeframe:

Yup, it is just a rebar, will be erected once the foundation is ready.

Groundbreaking this week for Chicago-St. Louis line in Dwight

The promise of a high-speed railway line linking Chicago and St. Louis, and making a local stop in Dwight suddenly feels a little more real this week.

Folks in this Livingston County community of 4,300 have heard stories of a 120-mph passenger train for years. But the most tangible step in the process of making that dream a reality comes on Tuesday.

That's been going on for a while, and is set to be complete soon.

Construction to begin on Dwight high-speed rail station

DWIGHT – Village President Jared Anderson said it’s only fitting Dwight – a town founded by railroad engineers – is the first town in Illinois to break ground on a new depot that will serve passengers on a high-speed rail network linking Chicago and St. Louis.

Anderson joined U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., Amtrak officials and others in Dwight on Tuesday for a groundbreaking ceremony for the $3.26 million depot.

The 800-square-foot structure is expected to be complete within a year, providing shelter, restrooms and other amenities for Amtrak passengers.

Private company seeks exclusive rights for high-speed rail

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is considering granting a private company exclusive rights to lease air space on highways for an elevated high-speed rail line from Rochester to the Twin Cities.

The North American High Speed Rail Group is seeking MnDOT Commissioner Charlie Zelle's approval for exclusive negotiating rights for two years for portions of I-494, Minnesota Highway 55, U.S. 52, U.S. 63 and Interstate-90, according to documents obtained by the Post-Bulletin from MnDOT under the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act.

Strong belief that the Ziprail private corporation is a sham, unfortunately.

Luckily NLX has more of a chance of happening.

I've never heard of this project before, is it true HSR or just faster Amtrak trains?

It's not true high speed rail, "one" of the definitions being 150mph plus operating speeds, but rather euphemistically higher speed rail or high performance rail. The media is very cavalier in defining what is high speed rail and politicians/bureaucrats will label anything going faster than 79mph as hsr to score points for their political self-worth index. The line itself is being upgraded to max 110mph speeds. Admirable by N. American standards, ho hum elsewhere.

HSR is 125mph, not 150
