Brightline’s First Locomotive Completes Initial Testing at Siemens Rail Manufacturing Hub

Quote:
The first Charger diesel locomotive for the Brightline inter-city service in southern Florida has successfully completed its first trial run on the 400 m test track at the Siemens manufacturing plant in Sacramento, California, the operator announced on September 8.

Static and dynamic testing was undertaken over a three-week period, covering around 45 aspects of the locomotive systems. As well as testing the Cummins QSK 95 diesel engine, there were functional tests of the air and braking systems, software, doors, fire detection and audible warning systems, communication and lighting. Siemens also verified the empty and fully loaded weight of the locomotive.

‘Operation of the locomotive and its passing of the initial track testing has given us a high degree of confidence that the Brightline service will be exceptionally reliable’, said Gene Skoropowski, Senior Vice President of Railroad Operations at Brightline. Siemens Rolling Stock President Michael Cahill added that the successful on-site testing was ‘a testament to the highly-skilled work being done by our engineers and plant employees that have worked tirelessly to design and manufacture these trainsets.’

The first completed push-pull trainset formed of two locomotives and four stainless-steel coaches is due to be delivered to Brightline’s West Palm Beach maintenance facility later this year. Revenue service between Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach is scheduled to begin in mid-2017.

I think that's the alternative underneath the Angeles National Forest being studied. The original preferred alignment was along SR14, but residents in Santa Clarita did not want it to bisect their town...

I, for one, thought they still preferred an adjusted SR14 alignment and were studying tunneling under the forest to pacify locals, but maybe not...

Transit Oriented Development In Florida

A look at Transit Oriented Development in West Palm Beach, Ft Lauderdale, Miami and Orlando as a result of All Aboard Florida's high-speed passenger rail being constructed in Florida.

Groundwork for preliminary expansion to Jacksonville/St Augustine are going through the motions now, with a Tampa expansion still to be explored.

Shorter platforms for California high-speed rail
Monday, October 24, 2016

CALIFORNIA High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) has revised guidelines for platform lengths on the state’s high-speed network after deciding that services will be operated by single train sets formed of up to 10 cars

In a notice to designers on station platforms and track layouts, which was issued last month, CHSRA proposes reducing the useable platform length from 430m to 244m. Platform tracks will have a minimum length of 838m, while refuge and stabling tracks will be reduced from 502m to 274m

Apparently was supposed to have platforms long enough for 20 cars now they are moving them down to ten, I think as long as they keep the land for future expansion and build shorter platforms to keep current capital costs lower this will be a prudent move

When will CHSRA decide on the rolling-stock?

Here's why California's high-speed rail system wants permission to buy foreign train components

Quote:
The train-buying process has begun for California’s high-speed rail system with a request to federal authorities to buy some of the components from foreign countries, if necessary, because there are no U.S.-based high-speed train manufacturers.

I think Boeiing (not ideal) or Lockheed Martin would be able to design and build those high tech pieces for trains.
American competition might create an "arms race" where technological breakthroughs and novel inventions recur closely...
Hopefully the US gets to two coast lines, the Texas line, the Florida, Vancouver - Dalles etc...

If Boeiing is making them, they won't excell as I think Boeiing wants to sell more aeroplanes.
