It's Opal time - paper tickets no longer sold or accepted from today

Public transport customers are reminded to be prepared and patient if they are yet to get an Opal card with paper tickets no longer sold or accepted from today.

The last customers without an Opal card have responded well to the information campaign, with 350,000 Opal cards issued in the last month and 10,000 calls to Opal Customer Care just in the last two weeks.

Ironically this park is the site of the world's first tramway loop built in 1881. The loop brought visitors right to the gate of the sports grounds and in a continuous loop could carry 1,000 persons per minute. The new "light rail" (= tram) will not be able to move more than about 200 per minute - still better than buses I guess.

This is the stop on the old loop outside the cricket ground:

Later an even bigger set of loops was developed:

Sydney was a pioneer of the looped method of tramway operation which is now standard practice across Europe and other parts of the world. Unfortunately the builders of the new tram system have not learned the lessons from their own city of moving huge crowds.

Yes I also wonder how well those island platforms will handle the large crowds at Moore Park. Perhaps a looped branch would have been a more effective solution there. Hopefully it won't be too much of a squeeze - time will tell.

No - not worth it, too much nonsense trying to get the approaches right. Cheaper to build a brand new tunnel.

The existing line over the Harbour Bridge will stay double-decker for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, Norwest Station, from Reddit
