CEBU, Philippines - An ad hoc committee is to be composed to spearhead the further developments for the completion of the Cebu City College.

The committee, the city council decided, will be composed of members who are administrators or officials of universities.

It will be headed by councilor Arsenio Pacaña, Dean of the Cebu Institute of Technology; councilor Rodrigo Abellanosa, Administrator of the Asian College of Technology and councilor Gerardo Carillo of the Committee on Education.

The committee will discuss with education authorities such as the Commission on Higher Education, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority as well as the founders of the existing colleges operated by local government units.

The Talisay City College and Cordova College are headed by their respective mayors while the Mandaue City College is separate from its local government unit.

Councilor Augustus Pe said the committee will also have to consider the aim of providing service and courses in demand and not available in the private sector.

The city council is set to pass the ordinance seeking the expansion of the Cebu City College which only operates a Nursing school in consortium with other schools. An initial P5 million will be allocated to further expand to other skills and vocational courses.

Its Board of Trustees will be headed by the mayor, a college administrator, chairman of the Committee on Education, president of the faculty association, president of the Supreme Student Council, president of the alumni association, CHED regional director, Department of Education-City Division head and accredited business or industry representatives. — Ferliza C. Contratista/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
it's about time that the cebu city government expands its city run college into a fullly functioning tertiary school in the city and region servicing its own people especially the poor yet deserving students who cant afford to go to the big name colleges and universities in the city. i hope cebu city college will provide education and training especially to the people living in the slum area and those wandering in the city streets begging so they can be fully integrated into the society.

They always increase their tuition fees even if they freeze their tuition fees now.

MANILA, Philippines - Students of Catholic schools in Cebu may get a relief of sorts after the schools heeded the call to shelve any tuition hike plan this year.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines said Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Cebu have supported the call of Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

"In response to the global crisis, the Archdiocesan Superintendent’s office supports Cardinal Vidal in his call on Catholic schools for a no-increase-of-tuition-fee policy for next school year 2009-2010," said Fr. Eduardo Ventic, head of the archdiocesan Catholic schools, in an article on the CBCP Web site Monday night.

He added that instead of increasing matriculation fees, the schools concerned will adopt “alternative schemes" to source funds for their needed operational expenditures.

Ventic cited availing of programs like the government-sponsored Fund for Assistance to Private Education (FAPE), Education Services Contracting (ESC), and Educational Voucher System (EVS).

Also, he disclosed other measures will be implemented like encouraging PTAs to sponsor scholarships, increased campaign for more enrollment, schools running their own canteens, and cutting unnecessary expenditures to ameliorate the tightening financial situation of Catholic schools in Cebu.

Earlier, Vidal aired concern on the effects of the global economic downturn on parents who might think twice before sending their children to Catholic schools if ever tuition fees are raised.

Vidal aired his appeal to Catholic institutions to do their share in carrying the burden of economic crisis by scrapping supposed plans to increase tuition fees for the coming school year.

But Ventic said that as early as January, when the effects of the global economic meltdown started to hit, some schools already announced they were not increasing their fees for the coming year.

He cited St. Joseph’s Academy in Mandaue City, as having done so that early in the year.

Also, two big universities in Cebu run by religious congregations announced a tuition freeze last month.

These include the University of San Carlos and University of San Jose-Recoletos.

Cebu archdiocese has 10 colleges, aside from the two universities, and around 60 grade and high schools run by religious congregations or by administrators representing the Cebu archdiocese. - GMANews.TV

CHED grants Silliman autonomous status
Tuesday, April 21, 2009

The Commission on Higher Education has granted an autonomous status to Silliman University in Dumaguete City for five years, from March 11, 2009 to March 30, 2014, a press release from the school said.

This is the third consecutive time that Silliman has been granted full autonomy. In his letter, CHED chairman Emmanuel Angeles lauded Silliman, citing its accomplishments, adherence to quality assurance, and commitment to public responsibility and accountability as a higher education provider in receiving the distinction.

An autonomous status, which is given to a select number of private higher education institutions in the Philippines, recognizes Silliman’s ability to independently develop and offer quality programs that respond to the demands of time, the press release said.

Silliman considers this distinction a challenge to further enhance its programs and services along its quad-focal functions of instruction, research, extension, and faith formation.

This complements its thrust of widening its network of partners in the country and abroad, the press release added.*

The Divine Word University or DWU was a private, Catholic, co-educational institution of higher learning run by the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in Tacloban City, Leyte, Philippines. Founded in 1927, it was closed in June 1995 by the school administrators after a court ruling favoring the labor union which represents its faculty members and other employees.

DWU was the biggest Catholic institution of higher learning in Leyte and Samar (Region VIII). At its peak, it had around 14,000 students, and a faculty complement of about 400 teachers. It offered courses in around 20 different fields including law and medicine, and pioneered in indigenous research in the region. Its students considered it a cost-effective alternative to more expensive private schools in Cebu and Manila for the students of Leyte and Samar. During the years it remained open DWU produced around 60,000 graduates, and was a major player in the educational, religious and economic picture of Region VIII. Its closure caused severe dislocation in these areas.

In June 2000 the Divine Word Hospital opened St. Scholastica College of Tacloban, renting the Janssen Building of the University for classroom use and office space. Courses were offered in nursing, medical technology, biology and pharmacy.

On February 21, 2006, the SVD announced the reopening of the Divine Word University of Tacloban under a new school name: "Liceo del Verbo Divino," though still under the SVD management.[3] A signing ceremony was held at the Santo Niño Church after the Holy Mass held in celebration of the birthday of Most Rev. Palo Archbishop Pedro Dean. This came ten years after the DWU shut down in 1995 after the dispute with faculty and other employees.
