Thanks for the info Lydon!

And guys, Newcastle's CBD is very run-down, there is no reason for them to preserve it.. its beyond repair.

Thats a pretty stupid logic. Imagine if they had that logic in 1945 Europe.

The area needs to be repaired so inequality and crime will decrease, just like in American cities.

Sure it can be repaired but also give people the option of shopping in indoor comfort. The Newcastle Area has over 400,000 residents and no mall.

Why should people have to shop along a busy road and have to go from place to place in the rain when they should just go to a mall?

Hi All

Here's an image to give you an idea of the positioning of the mall within the town borders. Look on the far right, in the middle. This was taken in April, so things have obviously changed quite a bit.

http://v24.lscache3.c.bigcache.googl...l/51489579.jpg

Newcastle is a town set in a very beautiful corner of KZN. Most of the open field in the center and to the left is zoned for development, if I'm not mistaken. I heard a rumour it'll be low cost development. I hope not.

As for the CBD being run down, please compare it to the surrounding towns and itll become obvious Newcastle is in a fair condition comparatively. KZN government generally has a poor record of upkeep, so it doesn't say very much, but it could be worse.

We all have different opinions,

I'm not saying let the CBD go to shambles, Newcastle should restore it.. but please give the 400,000+ residents the option of a mall, it's not like Newcastle is Kinshasa.

I grew up in Newcastle, but then moved to Ladysmith. Now staying in JHB.

I haven't heard many people using the words "gorgeous" & "Newcastle" in the same sentence.

Really? I mean the town itself could use a touch up with landscaping, but from what I could tell from Streetview, the hills and meadows around Newcastle are really pretty.

According to what I've heard, that is phase two. If it materialises.

There is a rather rundown cinema in the cbd, but due to the lack of foresight and inventiveness, the owners have let it go to waste. They own a large number of properties, but it is not their core focus. Transport is.

Rumours are that they plan on expanding and revamping the building, Victorian Mall, but for various reasons it has been continuously postponed, not excluding a persistantly aggressive tight-fistedness. Should Newcastle Mall decide to expand to include a cinema, Victoria Mall will suffer severely.

Here's the latest article on Newcastle Mall from the 'looklocal' website:

Dignitaries tour new shopping paradise

07 February 2012 | Bruce Douglas

The Newcastle Regional Mall is almost ready to be opened.

On Tuesday, various dignitaries were invited to a site inspection. These guests included: Mayor, Cllr Afzul Rehman, business magnate, Vivian Reddy, Blackrock Casino General Manager, John McGregor and the Sunday Tribune’s Masood Boomgaard.

They took a tour of the mall building, which is said to encompass 40 000 square metres, the equivalent size of Liberty Midlands in Pietermaritzburg. At its widest, the mall stretches across 400 metres.

In total, Mr Reddy said the investment made in establishing the mall was about R500 million. With the final touches underway, the project has taken a little over a year to be completed.

The ‘soft opening’ of the mall is set for March 29 and the main launch is scheduled for April 5 and will be graced by the presence of, among others, President Jacob Zuma and King Goodwill Zwelethini.

Speaking on the implications the opening of the Newcastle Regional Mall would have, Mr Reddy revealed plans to further extend the mall by another 20 000 square metres as a next phase. A golf course may also be opened in the vicinity of the mall.

And a host of other random people for no specific reason other than being connections of Mr. Vivian Reddy.

So, it's officially the soft opening today... Any pics or updates, anyone?

Newcastle Mall opens
30 Mar 2012

Quote:
Intro
Tenants are putting last minute finishes to their stores and window displays while builders and contractors hurry to clean and clear the way for the shoppers capitalising on the many opening specials
The opening of Newcastle Mall redefines the shopping experience for people living both within Newcastle, and surrounding towns. With 94 top quality stores spanning food and fashion, furniture and décor, footwear, eyewear, home-wear, sports-wear, audio, electronic, and banking, shoppers can now look forward to more choice, quality, and convenience than ever before.

In 2007 developers Zenprop Property Holdings (Pty) Ltd acquired the rights to develop the shopping centre on the 21ha site adjacent to the Black Rock Casino and Hotel, on the corner of Oak Avenue and the Ladysmith Road and within close proximity to the intersection with the N11. Ground works on this R400m development commenced in January 2011, and with construction progressing well and largely ahead of schedule.

Newcastle Mall offers 94 stores spanning 38 000m2 of air-conditioned retail space. There’s an exceptional line-up of leading South African major retail chains including Woolworths, Checkers, Game, Pick n Pay, and Edgars, a vast array of restaurants, services, and banking institutions alongside a host of local offerings and a sprinkling of international brands.

Newcastle Mall will also plays host to several retailers and food operators that are new both to the town and the region at large. These include popular coffee shop franchise, Mug & Bean; Capello’s, a popular Johannesburg-based bistro-lounge; a Fish-Aways and Debonaires combo store; and a new generation Milky Lane / Giramundo combo store providing flamed grilled chicken and delectable ice cream products.

On the fashion front, new-comers include leading international clothing brand, Kurt Geiger, Trappers Trading, Rage Shoes, Bargain Books, American Menswear Lifestyle, and Street Gear. Additional boutique-style outlets delivering the latest in fashion and accessories, as well as a specialized bridal boutique, the latest in eye ware, hair, and beauty products will complete the Mall’s vibrant tenant mix.

Abundant free on site parking together with multiple public transport drop-off points and state of the art security will ensure that shoppers enjoy unhindered access to a world class shopping environment that is clean, safe, and secure. Designated parking for the disabled and mothers with young children has also been allowed for.
