So? Why do they have to be world famous to be iconic? What proportion of the UK population would recognise the Liberty Bell? |

I'm not sure the Liver Building or Met Cathedral are in the same league of being internationally well known as the others on that list.
When it's boiled down, I think the only real world icons (as in structures) in the UK outside of London are Edinburgh Castle, Stone Henge, Forth Rail Bridge, Tyne Bridge and possibly the Crescent in Bath. |

Even those listed above you, few would be particularly internationally recognisable. Tower Bridge, Red telephone boxes, Big Ben, Stonehenge and thats about it, maybe the Giants Causeway too, but even then, that list would depend which country you live in and what interests you have. |

newcastle's quite unique in that it has a handful of instantly recognisable or well known landmarks or icons. the angel of the north is allegedly the uk's most recognisable structure ahead of st pauls or trafalgar square, then there's obviously the tyne bridge which has been iconic for almost a century now, while the millennium bridge is also fairly well known and has had its image used as a design motif.
beyond that the sage gateshead is quite well known - more in the league of glasgow's armadillo or hull's the deep in terms of recognition than the other things ive mentioned. and then there's hadrian's wall - massive worldwide name recognition with that one. |

The buildings in London and Edinburgh for sure, the buildings in Liverpool, same as the rest. (in my opinion)

For Brum, its got to be Selfridges. It's part of Windows7's Architecture theme, one of its Aluminium Discs is in the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery's Bull Ring exhibition.
Retail Week magazine has put it in its 'top 100 stores to visit in the world' every year since it opened.

No, I am saying the average person without an interest in architecture and buildings would probably ask that question- those buildings are certainly not on par with the instant recognition the likes of tower bridge and parliament can claim, not by a mile.

Agree about the Liverpolitanus but the whole thing is Naff imo. It's got to be the only provinicial thing about St George's Hall..and worse i'm half expecting Syd James to be one of the atlantes....more than a hint of a Carry on Film about it.

Fairy nuff, you're right of course, but having said its only fair to point out that there are many people in this world that wouldn't recognise stone henge, big ben or tower bridge.

Can't argue with that, a matter of perspective I guess!
