Poland is really moving ahead. These airports in the emerging economies show real vision, flair and ambition.
We in the West have lost our drive due to heavy debt levels and lack of ambitionWe are slowly being taken over by everyone else.

I agree. Beautiful projects. Anyone who thinks Poland is "poor" should get their head examined.

Warsaw Airport and Lot to create new hub

Lot Polish Airlines' new strategy calls for turning Warsaw Airport into a transport hub.

A letter of intent outlining closer cooperation between the carrier and authorities at Warsaw Airport should be signed within the next two to three weeks, daily Rzeczpospolita reports.

Talk of creating a hub in Warsaw has been going around for a few years now.

Michał Marzec, head of Warsaw Airport, told the daily that turning the airport into a hub basically boils down to creating a system which makes the transit of passengers and luggage from plane to plane more effective. He said that this would involve building new facilities and adapting existing facilities so they meet appropriate standards.

Currently, about 11 percent of Warsaw Airport's traffic is accounted for by passengers in transit. At present, the minimum transit time in Warsaw is 40 minutes.

Lot: new strategy, new destinations

The supervisory board of Lot Polish Airlines, Poland's flagship carrier, has approved a new strategy for the company, its spokesperson Leszek Chorzewski told Gazeta Wyborcza.

New solutions have been designed to facilitate the restructuring process, improve the firm's overall financial performance, and to aid the launch of new routes.

The company is waiting for the delivery of 787 Dreamliners that will serve flights to medium- and long-distance destinations. The first Dreamliner is expected to arrive in the beginning of 2012 and new Asian connections will be introduced before the end of the first quarter of that year.

In 2010, Lot Polish Airlines reported an operating loss of zł.160 million. The carrier served 4.5 million passengers, up 0.5 million over 2009. The Treasury Ministry hopes to start the privatization of Lot in the second half of this year.

Central Airport should be built by 2020

11.03. Warsaw (PAP) - A Central Airport, located between Warsaw and Lodz, should be built by 2020 when Warsaw airport's capacity will be exhausted, according to a report commissioned by Poland's infrastructure ministry.

"The new airport should be built around the year 2020 with Warsaw Okecie airport's capacity beginning to exhaust as of 2016," aviation department director at the infrastructure ministry Krzysztof Kapis said.

In the coming years the Warsaw airport will be extended to its maximum capacity of 12 million passengers a year, which according to air traffic prognoses, will become insufficient around the year 2020.

The new airport would cost around EUR 3.1 billion. The airport should be built between the Warsaw and Lodz conurbations to make it accessible to residents of most Poland's regions and passengers from the Czech Republic, Belarus and Ukraine.

The airport's construction should begin in 2013. In the first year of operations it should handle 16.6 million passengers, as of 2035 - up to 35 million annually.

According to the report, air traffic on Poland's airports will increase four-fold to close to 80 million people annually in 2035. (id)
