I really hope that Concacaf and Conmebol goes with the plan to unify both championships in the Americas Cup. A 16 teams championship just like Euro. With the 10 teams from South America and the 6 best teams from Concacaf. Brazil will host in 2015 but would be nice to see other countries outside from SA hosting it, like Mexico, USA and Canada.

It really is a great idea. Right now the competitions are just too fragmented, both the Copa America and Gold Cup get minimal interest from around the world. If you had Brazil and Argentina going up against the USA and Mexico, it could absolutely compete with the Euros.

The idea has already been put forward to FIFA. It's a very real possibility. The major stumbling block appears to be money and how it gets divided.

Report: CONCACAF Request Entry Into The Copa America
The CONCACAF head has revealed that his federation were seeking to create a 16-team mixed 'Copa Americas'.
By Daniel Edwards
Oct 6, 2010 10:14:00 AM

The 2015 Copa America could for the first time include the entire American continent, after North American governing body CONCACAF made a formal request to FIFA to be included in the South American tournament.

Under preliminary proposals, six North and Central American teams would join the 10 CONMEBOL members in the cup, which could be renamed the Copa Americas. Currently teams such as Mexico and the United States have participated in the Copa, but only in a highly controversial guest role.

CONCACAF head Chuck Blazer confirmed in an interview with Sports Illustrated that the idea had been considered for a long time in the organization, but that this was the first time it had been officially approved and put forward. The official however also stated that the economic interests of North American sides would also have to be protected.

“Other configurations might lend themselves to being possible,” he said. “Economic parameters would need to be met. The Gold Cup is the main source of revenue to support the youth programs and competitions that we do. If we did [a Copa Americas], we would have to see how it would replace what currently exists.”

Keep the Gold Cup, top 4 teams qualify directly to the Copa America, next 4 teams have a playoff for the two remaining spots.

It's possible, but to keep the Gold Cup as a qualifying tournament, they would have to move the Copa Americas to even years to match the Euro schedule. Otherwise, the North American teams would be worn out by the time they played the Copa Americas.

If this were to happen, every even year would be heaven for international soccer fans. Your summer would have either the World Cup, or two massive continental competitions + the Olympics tournament.

This will make it harder for weaker teams to join. What about all those Caribbean islands?

I can't speak for US interest but the midweek date will really dent the Canadian turnout. If it was a weekend there would be a lot of travelers. In terms of Canadian support, it will mostly be people from Windsor hopping across the river for the night but it''s not a huge city so we'll see what happens.

I know this has been asked already, but seriously why is the gold cup always hosted in the US? Mexico and Canada are more than capable to host as well.

It's a good idea, and they should keep the Copa America name and tradition.

Have you ever performed this tournament in Central America? I think it should be done there too and not only in USA and Mexico

No one else wants to host the tournament because they would all lose money on it. It doesn't matter where anyone would like to see it go if no one except for the US has any interest in hosting it.

We're hosting it because it our tournament and no one else can have it. We, the people of the United States decided this and we don't want Mexico or Canada to have it. They can start their own tournament. Face it..........we are evil and we want it for ourselves.
