EasyJet launches longest-ever route - to Jordan

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Jordan's tourist minister has welcomed budget airline EasyJet's new low fare route to the capital Amman, saying it will boost the country's tourism industry.

Minister Zeid Qsous called the start of regular EasyJet flights on March 27 "good news" because the company was a leading European carrier.

The British-based airline announced its first route to Jordan as the country signed its Open Skies agreement with the European Union.

EasyJet said flights went on sale Thursday. It expected to fly three times a week from London Gatwick to Amman with a return ticket priced at $166, or 106 British Pounds, tax inclusive.

The fare is around 25 percent of the rates offered by other airlines.

The new route will open up the options for those who are happy to travel independently or semi-independently, utilising the services of a Jordan inbound operator or booking direct with hotels. The increased frequency, capacity and more flexible pricing is great news for tourism to Jordan and should work to increase awareness of the destination as well as grow the independent traveller market, which already makes up approximately 50% of UK visitors.”

* Some operators will also utilise no-frills flight options to Jordan in order to offer more competitive packages.

Well, finally tried Easy Jet in February for a meeting in London. Considering the luggage and distance from the heart of London, you will save about 40% compared to a ticket on RJ. However, the fact that it is a 5+ hour flight made it feel like a flying coffin and I felt like suffocating! Crew was friendly and professional. But hey, I would pay the extra $ to fly on RJ with ample space, food, entertainment and right into Heathrow and not Gatwick in the middle of nowhere! If it was a one hour flight or so, yes, low cost is the way to do it but more than that is really torture.
