The planking game

And here, now, is the now generation’s game of taunt and dare, its lighter version of our time’s frat initiation – you know, the ritual which inflicted cuts, contusions and cigarette burns on our bodies, and over which our mothers wrung their hands, surrendered and wept. It is the kind of taunt and dare game that elders just could not, and would not, understand.

It is called planking, and although it is not as dramatic and horrible as being paddled and burned by your future brods, it is just as pointless — but popular — among the young, as the frat ritual was in our days. I could imagine mothers, when they discover their sons are into planking, screaming “Why!!!?” the way ours had done when they discovered some frat initiated us.
Planking is also called the lying game. Basically, it involves lying flat face down, hands on the sides, in the most unlikely places, at the most unlikely times, preferably when there are plenty of people, and getting photographed, the photo uploaded in the Internet, there to be laughed at, drooled over, praised, or whatever else constitutes “acceptance” nowadays among the young.
Because at the heart of this seemingly silly and useless exercise is really the young’s need for acceptance, the way we endured physical abuse in our generation to become one of the boys in the brotherhood.

Well, actually, acceptance and assertion of one’s individuality: planking is aself-expression, ,maybe brazen to the eyes of elders, but a declaration of one’s capability, daring and derring ‘do.
How else can you explain the act of someone suddenly dropping to the ground and lying there face down to be photographed? How else can you explain what motivates these young people to do this in the most dangerous places, like the edge of a balcony, or in the clips of a lamppost, or right there in the busy intersection, at the height of rush hour, in the whole of a minute of the red light?
There’s been a death or two, and some accidents related to planking. Somebody planked the edge of a high-rise balcony and fell to his death. Somebody got swept by a truck when he did the same in a deserted highway.

But the planking continues. There’s a Facebook page loaded with all sorts of planking photos, from the silly to the outrageous. One requisite for planking was to do it in some landmark – thus you see people lying down at the Taj Majal, in the Alps, at the Metro.
In Bacolod, there is a growing number of plankers. Its easy to do this, considering everyone seems to have cameras in their phones and access to the Net is easy. I heard somebody planked the floor of the Bacolod Government Center, in front of Vice Mayor Thaddy. I saw photos of somebody planking the counter at McDonald’s, in full view of the crew and the people in the queue.
Someone also planked the rails of Piazza Sorrento and the lagoon, with half their bodies floating.

The young have a word for this in the dialect: “Tigaaaas!”, which literally means ‘hard’ and can be, figureatively taken to mean out of the ordinary, different, or even exceptional or extraordinary.
I’m sure you have been called “Tigaaaas!”, too, at some point in your life and I’m sure you know how that feels. Wanna plank to relieve the feeling?*

I don't want to be KJ but I doubt kun i-allow sang Mods for us to add another thread sa SSC- Visayas.

Most likely, this thread will be merged with our Shop & Dine Thread like what happened to The See & Be Seen Thread before.

I am hopeful na this will stay since Clubs and Bars or Night Life for that matter does not belong to shop and dine kay wala ka man ga-dine masyado except sa pulutan kung may ara or gina-allow kag certainly wala ka guid ga shop except kung lain nga klase "shop" ang ginanamin, I mean girls in skimpy attire to be bluntly direct. Gin-research ko na ang precedence and I saw a thread on night life in a certain city in Thailand and Canada but we'll just see.

I am hopeful that this area will be developed to its fullest potential. Of all the establishments, ang wala naglain da ang bowlingan kag ang manokan nga may banda banda pierme sa tubang sina plus the park. I am happy nga gin-investan ni Ong sang daw water slide da ang area kay amo guid na ang isa sa mga corwd drawers dira.

it will depend on how fast the thread goes. if it will remain dormant for a long period usually they merge it or worse archive the thread.
