Sugar output drop cuts Victorias’ net
PROFITS OF listed Victorias Milling Co., Inc. were drastically cut to P54.41 million in the first quarter of its fiscal year amid lower sugar output. Net income fell along with revenues. In its financial report, Victorias Milling said earnings dropped to P54.51 million in September to November last year from P355.98 million the previous year. Revenues from operations went down to P670.03 million from P1.011 billion while operating expenses slightly rose to P58.94 million from P53.73 million. “Cane supply milled for the first quarter is slightly lower by 4.1% or 31,532 metric tons (MT) versus the targeted volume,” Victorias Milling said. “However, a higher drop [was] posted at 20.8 % or 194,433 MT against the same period in 2009 due to the delayed start of milling for this crop year by two weeks,” the firm added. Production of refined sugar was also more than a month late due to the minimal volume of available raw sugar stocks, Victorias Milling said. Raw sugar production was 14.3% or 213,308 50-kilogram (kg.) bags short of the target and lower by 665,497 50-kg. bags from the previous year’s output. Refined sugar output was 56.2% or 787,412 50-kg. bags below the target and 64.1% or 1,093,366 50-kg. bags lower from the previous year, the company said. The company filed for corporate rehabilitation in July 1997. Victorias Milling, which accounts for about a tenth of total raw sugar production of the country and about a third of refined sugar output, has been in the black for three years now. The sugar miller, which is now part of the Lucio Tan group, also owns Victorias Golf and Country Club, Inc., Victorias Food Corp. and Victorias Quality Packaging Corp., all in Negros Occidental. -- N. US Jr. NBA coach to local coaches: ‘Have passion, own philosophy’
By Sid Ventura – January 19th, 2011 ![]() Jr. NBA coach Frank Lopez with Alaska assistant coach and former PBA cager Jojo Lastimosa By Sid Ventura For Yahoo! Southeast Asia If a Filipino basketball coach wants to try his luck in the United States, Jr. NBA coach Frank Lopez has this friendly advice: “Be passionate about what you do and develop your own coaching philosophy.” “Right now, to continue to do the best job they can here,” Lopez said right before the start of the Jr. NBA Coaches Clinic at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig. “Even as an American, the coaching positions in the US are very hard to come by. But what impresses most coaches or most athletic directors of colleges or most NBA scouts are those people who really have a passion for the game, which I know the Filipino community does, and to have something, sort of a personalized ideal philosophy that they bring from over here to there. That’s very important.” Lopez, who is in town as part of NBA Asia’s Jr. NBA program, said he supports the idea of exporting Filipino coaching talent. “As far as Filipino coaches abroad, I think it’s a great thing. This is where it starts right here, with the enthusiasm and to want to do well. Other countries have benefited from having coaches come over from the United States and helping them out.” Aside from the clinic at the Ynares Sports Arena, Lopez will be overseeing one more at St. John’s Institute in Bacolod City. “This year, the coaches program is gonna be a little more in-depth. There will be more emphasis on how to teach players to become better players,” he said. For both legs, Lopez will be assisted by the Alaska Aces coaching staff, said Alaska president Wilfred Steven Uytengsu. “We’re going to support the program that they have,” Uytengsu said. “The NBA is bringing Frank to help train local coaches. We’re going to complement that with Jojo Lastimosa, Dickie Bachmann, and former players like Roehl Gomez, Boy Cabahug. And our players and coaches will work hand in hand with the NBA coaches to train not just the coaches but the young players. It’s a great opportunity for the coaches and players to be trained by NBA and PBA legends.” When asked how local players could improve internationally and gain attention of US scouts, Lopez pushed for more overseas exposure. “I think what you’re lacking is probably a little more exposure,” Lopez observed. “The talents of the players here are better served if they get exposure in the US. If they can compete and maintain a sort of level of play against players from the United States, I’ll think you’ll see more and more coaches from those areas in the United States try and encourage Filipino players to try their luck (in the US). And we might see some Filipino players in the college level. I want to see more players come out and play college ball in the US. Not that the United States has the best program, but it has the most exposure.” Lopez has been with the Jr. NBA Program in the Philippines since its inception in 2007, and he has seen its growth firsthand. He said, “I remember first starting out, I didn’t have much of a role. And now, I’m actually conducting the coaches’ clinic. I’m overwhelmed. I don’t consider myself to be one of the star coaches.” He may not be a star coach or a household name, but Lopez knows a thing or two about running basketball camps. He served as the program and site director of the Orlando Magic basketball camp for 14 years and was lead clinician of the NBA All-Star Weekend Jam Session for six years. He earned his degree in Education/Physical Education at Southeastern College in Lakeland, Florida and has coaches extensively at the high school level.
