Armed forces, police on full alert for Azkals game
Tuesday, February 8, 2011

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Negros Occidental declared a full alert status in the province starting today in line with security for the Team Azkals' AFC Challenge Cup qualifying match against Mongolia at the Panaad Park and Stadium tomorrow, February 9.

Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office (Noppo) Director Allan Guisihan said all police station chiefs in the province of Negros and the Negros Occidental Provincial Public Safety Company were directed to be on full alert to pre-empt possible terrorist attacks in their respective areas of responsibility.

The station chiefs were also directed to conduct intensified 24-hour checkpoint operations in strategic areas to assure the safety of the public, the Noppo director added.

According to Guisihan, police personnel from different cities and municipalities of the province were already deployed at the Panaad Stadium to secure the safety of the players and all the Negrenses who will watch the match at Panaad tomorrow.

Noppo will deploy more than a thousand law enforcers starting today, he stressed.

The composite force will include more than 700 policemen from the Provincial Command, 200 members of the Philippine Army, policemen from the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), and personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard and the Bureau of Fire Protection.

During the final coordinating conference held at the Governor's Conference Hall yesterday for "Oplan Football," it was agreed that a dry run for the security preparations will be held today to address possible scenarios that may occur during the actual game tomorrow.

Police Superintendent Jefferson Descallar was designated as the overall ground commander for the overall security at the Panaad Stadium.

Guisihan also said that the spectators will be subjected to a body search and scanners before they can enter the stadium.

On the other hand, BCPO OIC Ricardo De la Paz said that he ordered the 10 station chiefs here in Bacolod to enhance their police visibility in their respective areas of responsibility.

The BCPO has already set up checkpoints at the city's points of entry starting last night.

De la Paz ordered all station chiefs to check and monitor the entry of motorcycles in their area, considering that motorcycles were often used as gateway vehicles of criminal elements.

De la Paz also cautioned the public not to bring valuable things during the football games at Panaad.

Meanwhile, Guisihan said that as of yesterday, they have not yet received any confirmation about President Noynoy Aquino's arrival during the game tomorrow but they are prepared if the President decides to come to witness the game.

"We are prepared for the President's visit. If the President arrives, his presence will entail only a slight alteration in our final security plans," Guisihan added.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda had already issued a statement confirming that the President cannot attend the much-awaited football game, contrary to earlier media reports. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla and Merlinda A. Pedrosa)
