I think San Francisco is best in spite of itself. San Francisco's planning process features: (1) excessive public input allowing individuals and small groups of self-interested people to block even major projects, (2) height limits that result in the infamous "tabletop effect" in which large number of buildings are the same height, (3) excessive concern about wind and shade (somewhat understandable given the city's summer fog AND wind) which makes it almost impossible to build really tall buildings because a building tall enough will almost certainly shade a park somewhere. And then there is the city's inbred bias against highrises based on mythology about excesses of the 1960s and 1970s, and on concern about safety in earthquakes (a factor shared with LA, Seattle and Vancouver)
Were it not for these factors, SF would have one or more supertalls giving it the unquestioned lead on the west coast. As things are, while it does not have the west coast's tallest building (LA does), it does have its tallest RESIDENTIAL building (the Millenium Tower, I believe, with One Rincon Hill a close second). And while it's not so much a feature of the the skyline, SF's highrise district is one of only 2 in US cities (NY being the other) that are really interesting and walkable because almost every building, highrise or not, has street level retail, there remain plenty of non-highrise architectural gems interspersed and public transportation is good enough to give most people an alternative to driving downtown (meaning few blank walls on over-sized,out-of-scale highrises, few parking structures downtown and lots of sidewalk crowds and excitement). |

That's the greatest San Diego shot I've ever seen!
I voted for Seattle based strictly on skyline, but I would choose SF's total package over any west coast city any day. So: 1.) Seattle 2.) San Fransisco 3.) Honolulu 4.) LA 5.) Denver (pending on angle) Skip the rest (SD is coming up though)....... |
