Me thinks this will be a super quick build.

Yeah, it shouldn't take too long at all. It's only a 12 story after all.

Its actually 15 stories. But yeah ATO need to be in in 2 years. They will probably be in the ground for 6 months, then you will start to see it rise pretty quickly.

So sad to think Empire Square could have risen here, sniff, that should be Empire Square they are doing prep work for, not some little piddler!

That's one of the annoying things about this project. While I would have rather not lost the Printery or Treasury Row at all, it wouldn't have been so painful if what we were getting in return was something that was architecturally brilliant/iconic, which this just isn't!

That demolition work exposes the piece of shit that is the Myer Centre. I've always hated the Elizabeth St side of that !!

Come 15yrs down the track, and hopefully someone buys up the Myer Centre and completely refurbs it - complete with 90+ storey hotel/office tower on top.

It was probably considered a stylish feature back in the 80s that hasn't aged well. Look at Broadway and the pre-reno Wintergarden; same issue!

There are some relatively inexpensive things that they could surely do as a stop gap to freshen it up - repaint it, clean the windows and possibly replace the glass, put up some artworks inside the arches, or maybe paint them individual colours just to break up the uniform beige/cream colour. Also look at repaving the footpath along that part and reconfiguring it to include a few more coffee shops or something. Almost anything would help!

A full redevelopment would be best though, just as long as the Queen St facades are all kept!

Looking at the site towards Charlotte St doesn't make it any better, as we get the whole backend of the Telstra Exchange. Covering it up is one of the only pros I see in Grocon's short stack, though something better could have done the job just as well!

Then you can also rebuild Queen Street Bus station to:
Increase capacity
Improve connectivity (from an operations perspective--Looking at you: Platform B)
Improve links to the rest of the centre (Platform C!!!)
Build an underground walkway to KGS

I think that there are plans for a revamp of the Queen St Bus Station to try and address some of it's issues, but the issue I believe is (of course) squabbling between BCC, who I believe still own and operate the Station, and Translink.

I can't remember the exact issue, but it relates to who will spend the money and who will take ownership...I think BCC wants Translink to take it, but Translink wants BCC to do the revamp first...or something?

It was concreted about a year ago wasn't it, then they carved it up to make it look like paving. One of the first stretches to get the "new" look I think.

The lower part near Albert Street was (thank god!), but if you walk up towards George St past the Muffin Break and Ticketek Office, all of that area are still those old brick pavers I'm pretty certain.

Here's a little update for everyone. I noticed that Grocon's excavation plan had been approved, and while I generally don't look at the these construction-related ones I decided to in this case, and I'm glad I did as it shows some not-insigificant ground floor changes.

The monster retail area on the Family Services Building side will, appropriately, be split into 3 smaller tenancies. Meanwhile, the Laneway retail/cafe tenancy now extends all the way up the side of the building to Elizabeth St (originally it was cut off by a fire services cabinet) and appears to either open onto Elizabeth St as well as into the lane, or has a take away counter facing Elizabeth St, I can't be sure...

For comparison's sake, here's the original layout:

Grocon have added 55 Elizabeth to their jobs in progress section of their website, complete with what is the best render of the project I've yet seen.

I'm trying hard to ignore that, and the demolition images down the side.

The render of the building as a whole doesn't look bad, and as I'm still trying to be an optimist and look for any good parts to this development seeing as we're getting it regardless, it's one plus at least...
