The main stadium is needed as Basra prepares for the 2013 Gulf Cup, a World Cup-styled soccer
tournament among Mideast nations.

So its intended for the regional tournament, but obviously it will have use after that. Not sure what your background is with soccer, but normally nations either have a 'national stadium' where they play all their internationals, or they spread it around the country. I'll be surprised if this doesn't get used by the Iraqi national team; and as for the clubs, I'm sure clubs in Basra will have the option of renting it.

But to answer your question, there's almost no chance of other nations in the Middle East using it. Doesn't work like that in soccer. All countries have their own stadiums - dilapidated or not - that are used for home matches. It can however attract far more friendlies at club and international level.

The Middle East as a region has decent stadia for the most part, certainly by worldwide standards.

there was no war, and if if there was it ended ages ago...Basra is set to become the next Kuwait City, Doha, Dubai etc...so expect more large-scale projects in Iraq

theres NO war in Iraq now ! from Kurdistan till Basrah , theres NO war !

and that stadium will obv be used by the Iraqi National team ... it wont be a waste for sure , cause Iraq needs ANY project at the moment .
+ theres other stadium which will be built in Baghdad with a capacity of 100k .

And Btw Iraq is planning to host large sports event in the future , like the Asian cup or even World cup but after like 20 years or somethng

kurdistan is a region in iraq's north, and basra is a city in the south...he wasn't trying anything :P

LOL first of all Iam NOT kurdish to try anything ..
2nd wat i meant was Kurdistan is in the north of Iraq ..and Basrah is in the south of Iraq ..
so basically i said theres no war in Iraq from the north till the south of the country , but in other words

The city is near the sea and the country has oil so it could be, will they move the capital to Basra if Baghdad gets blown to peices?

Why do they make this stadium fro Gulf cup of Nations, so big but Iraq people are poor so 65,000 people will be empty.

are you saying it won't get filled to capacity? considering Basra has a population of 3-4 million (football crazy) people and other tourists will be traveling from the Gulf to watch the matches, you will hardly find any seats...

lol when Iraq played in Iraq ( 3 times after the war ) , the people which were outside the stadiums in Erbil and Baghdad were more than the people which were inside the stadium ..
Iraqis are crazy about football ! and especially when the national team is playing ..

A lot were outside cus there was no place for them XD
and 80,000 were inside the stadium (tho it takes 45,000 only) , but that time there benches used to be there not seats :p

like what? every ministry gets their share in the budget funding...you just don't hear about the other projects because it doesn't get as much media attention, but if you visit the Iraq forum you can learn more

Iraqis are crazy about football ! and especially when the national team is playing ..

Iraq will be an asian superpower in futbol cuz they won 2007 asian cup. And the new stadiums will help them get better. But world futbol i don't think so.
