Emirates to Deploy Airbus A380 on Dubai-Shanghai Route

Shanghai, one of the biggest cities in China, is scheduled to join Emirates' list of Airbus A380 destinations, when the airline starts its non-stop, three days a week service from Dubai on 27th April 2011.

By Southall Travel -Thursday, April 14, 2011 09:56 PM

Emirates, the national airline of Dubai, is all set to include Shanghai in its ever-expanding list of Airbus A380 destinations. The carrier will begin its non-stop service from Dubai to Shanghai from 27th April 2011.

Shanghai, the most populated city in China, will be the third destination in the region of Greater China that will welcome the Airbus A380 operated by Emirates. The airline launched its superjumbo for Beijing on 1st August 2010 and for Hong Kong two months later.

The airline's 489-seater A380 is going to operate three days a week (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday). The flight EK302 will be departing from the Dubai International Airport at 0310hrs (local time) and will be arriving at Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 1530hrs (local). The return flight EK303 is scheduled to depart from Shanghai at 2330hrs (local) and arrive in Dubai at 0430hrs (local) the next day.

Being the largest passenger airliner, the A380 flight on Dubai-Shanghai route ensures a higher number of seats for all the cabin classes. This means that higher number of travellers booking cheap tickets in the economy class on flights from Dubai to Shanghai can be accommodated aboard the massive jetliner. A higher supply of cheap economy tickets on the flight would spell as a great advantage for the increasing traffic of passengers between the two destinations.

The arrival time of the Emirates' A380 at the Dubai airport allows the travellers from China to have a convenient transfer travel to various destinations that are served by Emirates. The premier airline serves almost all major destinations in the Middle East, several destinations in Africa and a growing number of cities in Europe. Emirates recently added Geneva and the Copenhagen to its flight network in Europe.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline & Group, was pleased with the development and appreciated the support offered by the authorities in China and Shanghai.

"Thanks to the support that we have received from the Civil Aviation Administration of China and the Shanghai Airport Authority, Shanghai will become the latest destination to join our global Airbus A380 network. Emirates currently has 15 A380s in service, flying from Dubai to 10 countries around the world," Sheikh Ahmed was quoted in the press release published on the Emirates' website.

"Emirates has enjoyed a long and successful partnership with China, we began cargo operations between Dubai and Shanghai in 2002, and then started passenger services in 2004. The A380 launch demonstrates our continuing commitment to this important country, in addition to boosting trade between China and Dubai, the Middle East and Africa," added Sheikh Ahmed.

Mr Yu Wuyan, Vice President, Shanghai Airport Authority & Chairman of the Board, Shanghai International Airport was also quoted in the company's press release as stating, "We are happy to welcome Shanghai's first A380 flight to land at Shanghai Pudong Airport, having adapted the facilities and enforced thorough safeguard measures for A380s to ensure the smooth operations of this revolutionary superjumbo."

As of now, travellers are able to buy tickets on Emirates' double-daily flights to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, and daily services to Guangzhou; while the airline's fleet of 15 A380s are currently operating on services from Dubai to London Heathrow, Manchester, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Toronto, Seoul, Bangkok, Beijing, Jeddah, New York, Hong Kong, Sydney and Auckland.

City mulls plan to open airspace to private aircraft
04.11.2011
Shanghai Daily

Shanghai is considering opening up its low altitude airspace for general aviation to enable a growing number of private jets to fly freely over the city.

The East China Bureau of the Civil Aviation Administration of China said its airspace management plan will be formulated within five years.

“Opening more airspace can boost related industry and bring both social and economic benefits,” it said in response to a proposal made by the city’s top advisory body.

Civil aviation officials said they have reached a consensus with the military on gradually opening up the airspace on a trial basis.

China decided to open its low-altitude airspace to civil aviation last November in a circular that said trial operation will start in some areas this year.

Although Shanghai is not on the first list of trial areas, local aviation experts agreed that the city should begin airspace management reform in view of a potential demand for helicopters and light planes which normally fly at low altitudes.

Wei Jian, an aviation professor with Shanghai University of Engineering Science, said the move “will bring new growth point to Shanghai’s economy."

Wei said the strict control of low-altitude airspace has long been regarded as a bottleneck in aviation development and available resources are not well used. Private aircraft owners have to apply for permission days in advance for every flight.

Low-altitude airspace, normally below 1,000 meters, is mostly used for police patrol, firefighting, medical first aid, news reporting and other businesses.

Regional aviation authority did not disclose the number of private aircraft in Shanghai. People only saw police helicopters mostly during the World Expo last year. However low-attitude flights may not make everyone happy.

Residents living near the Hongqiao International Airport protested over the weekend after aviation authority lowered the minimum flight altitude on Wednesday. They said noise pollution will only get worse with more planes in the sky.

Emirates marks first A380 flight to Shanghai
Originally published on middle-east.businesstraveller.com 27/04/2011 - Filed under: News »

Emirates’ first scheduled Airbus A380 service to Shanghai Pudong International Airport arrived Wednesday afternoon.

Flight EK302 from Dubai marks the airline's third destination in China for Emirates’ A380, following services to Beijing and Hong Kong.

Richard Jewsbury, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, Far East & Australasia, said the double-decker service marks the “next phase” of its eight-year-old passenger services to Shanghai.

Jia Ruijun, General Manager of Shanghai International Airport Company, said it was an important milestone which would help reinforce its position as “the most attractive core air hub in the Asia-Pacific region”.

In 2005, Emirates traffic to China was 159,000 passengers and there were 11 Chinese registered businesses in Dubai.

Today there are over 2,500 Chinese businesses registered in Dubai and UAE trade with China is projected grow from $30bn in 2010 to $100bn by 2015.

Emirates’ A380 will operate three days a week (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) as EK302 departing Dubai at 0310hrs (local time) and arriving at Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 1530hrs (local time).

The return flight EK303 departs Shanghai at 2330hrs (local time) and arrives in Dubai at 0430hrs (local time) the following day.

Currently Emirates operates double-daily services each to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, and daily services to Guangzhou.

EK302 and EK303 will be operated by a Boeing 777-300ER on Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

United Airlines starts its Los Angeles-Shanghai flights, competing with American
20 May 2011

CHICAGO (AP) - United Airlines said Friday that it was launching its Los Angeles-to-Shanghai route.

United had asked for government permission in October to begin the route, which competes with an American Airlines flight between the two cities.

United, a unit of United Continental Holdings Inc., which is based in Chicago, began operating flights to China in 1986 and now sends 11 daily to Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai.
