Cathay Pacific flight evacuated in fire scare
The day before, my flight which departed midnight between Dec 7 and 8th had to return to PVG due to unable to retract nose landing gear. We made a overfueled landing (landing at almost MTOW, no fuel dumping was perfromed), and the fire depart was out in full force following the plane as it taxied to a stop. It was quite a sight.

Intense fog elsewhere harms Shanghai air
Shanghai Daily
Jan 11, 2012

HEAVY fog in eastern and central China yesterday harmed Shanghai's air quality, and the effects will continue today with "light pollution" forecast.

The fog also affected flights from Shanghai to some northern cities, airport authorities said.

Yesterday morning, fog hit seven provinces and cities including Beijing, Tianjin and Jiangsu with visibility reduced to below 200 meters in places.

Influenced by the fog, air quality in Shanghai almost reached the "polluted" level, according to the Shanghai Environment Monitoring Center, under the PM10 standard. The content of nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide was also relatively high.

Officials warned that the air quality would be even worse today and people with heart and breathing problems were advised to stay indoors.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said it would be overcast to cloudy today, but tomorrow will see some drizzle, which will help to improve air quality.

Fog may continue to affect some areas of the country this morning.

Last night, Guizhou, Hubei and Henan provinces issued yellow fog alerts.

The National Meteorological Center said eastern China and the Yellow River valley would also be hit by fog, with visibility reduced to below 500 meters.

In northern China yesterday, flights to Beijing and Tianjin were disrupted.

Airport authorities said 98 flights were delayed for an hour and another 34 had been canceled by noon at Beijing because of poor visibility.

Flights from Shanghai to Beijing were also affected with many morning flights not leaving until the afternoon and two flights canceled. Three flights to Tianjin were cut yesterday and about 16 delayed.

Fog is not the only problem facing the country's transport services.

A snow storm was expected to hit western China's Qinghai Province last night, while in some areas of northeast China, in Heilongjiang Province, temperatures were expected to drop to minus 40 degrees Celsius today, authorities said.

233g-heroin smuggler gets 15 years
Shanghai Daily
Feb 9, 2012

AN African drug smuggler who carried more than 200 grams of heroin in his body when he arrived at Pudong International Airport last fall was sentenced to 15 years in prison for drug smuggling, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court said yesterday.

Gaylaw Bomgombe, 32, whose nationality has not been confirmed, was also fined 30,000 yuan (US$4,765) and will be deported from China after serving his sentence, the court ruled.

The court said that after Bomgombe arrived on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand, last October 5, a routine X-ray check by customs officials found suspicious items in his stomach and intestines.

Bomgombe admitted swallowing foreign objects while being questioned.

During his stay in the hospital, 46 cylindrical objects wrapped with plastic tape were eliminated from Bomgombe's body, and 15 were found to contain heroin weighing a total of 232.8 grams, prosecutors said.

Late-night flights being studied for Shanghai
Shanghai Daily
2012-2-15

CIVIL aviation authorities are researching the idea of extending flights late into the night - so-called red-eye flights - at Shanghai airports to handle the ever-increasing traffic.

The plan, however, is facing difficulties such as lack of public transport at night, especially at Pudong International Airport. At the city's Hongqiao International Airport, complaints are mounting among residents living nearby about noise and safety concerns.

The research, led by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, is focusing on eastern China. Officials said they're looking at "flight operation, the condition of aircraft and facility maintenance for night flights as well as the pilots, crew members, maintenance workers and other issues."

They will study the effects on safety with the addition of night flights, officials said. The final decision will be made by the State Civil Aviation Administration.

Few flights now take off between 11pm and 7am at the two airports. Hongqiao International Airport had no passenger planes scheduled to take off or land after 12am, while there are a few international flights landing around midnight to Pudong International.

Noise is issue for residents

Despite the nighttime lull, residents who live near Hongqiao airport expressed anger toward plane noise. Thousands of residents in a community about 3 kilometers from Hongqiao airport protested last year after the aviation authority allowed planes to fly at lower altitudes. They feared the noise problem would worsen.

Aviation analysts said the airports are getting busier. Shanghai's two airports handle more than 70 million passengers a year, a number that continually grows. The city added a new terminal and runway at Hongqiao and plans to build fourth and fifth runways at Pudong.

Airlines welcomed the idea but expressed concern about the limited supply of pilots.

Zhang Wuan, spokesman for Shanghai-based Spring Airlines, said more red-eye flights "would be helpful to release the great pressure on the two airports in the city, while increasing the turnout capacities."

Red-eye flights would be a welcome option for tourists, because fares are often cheaper.

Experts said improvements would need to be made to transportation late at night to carry passengers to and from the airports. The subway, for example, goes to both airports but operates only until about 11pm.

Just have line 2 make special night time Pudong Airport runs, say once every half hour, or whatever would work. Then you can get people to Pudong, and have night time flights that don't bother residents as much, because it is far less populated

I was very surprised how early subway and maglev services shut down. Pretty much after 10pm there's no rail service left at all!

I agree, considering Shanghai's night life they should make line 1 and 2 24/7, maybe with reduced frequency but there're enough ridership to support it.

Fog delays hundreds of flights in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Dense fog has blanketed Shanghai's Pudong International Airport, delaying more than 400 flights, airport authorities said Wednesday.

The fog began to gather at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, forcing the delay of 440 flights and the cancellation of 298 departure flights as of 3 p.m. Wednesday, airport operators said.

The cancellations have left more than 700 passengers stranded in Dalian, a northeastern port city in Liaoning province, according to the Dalian branch of China Southern Airlines.

Meteorological authorities said the fog is expected to disperse around midnight Wednesday.

Heavy fog also swept the eastern city of Tianjin, central Hebei province and the southern island province of Hainan Wednesday morning, disrupting transportation in those regions.

The National Meteorological Center warned at 8 a.m. Wednesday of heavy fog in central and eastern China, with visibility reduced to less than 200 meters in some areas.
