More or less yes, but when it's idling I don't see why can't PVG uses it if there is enough demand, COMAC will always have priority use of that runway.

Pudong airport to renovate its Terminal 1
Shanghai Daily
Mar 16, 2013

RENOVATION of Terminal 1 at Pudong International Airport will begin this year, including an expansion of the facility and upgrades to the luggage system.

The work, expected to be done by the end of next year, will benefit Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines, which will become the largest occupant of the terminal, said the airport operator.

The capacity of the terminal, first put into service in 1999, will grow from 20 million to more than 36.8 million passengers a year after the 1.2 billion yuan (US$192.9 million) renovation.

The revamped terminal will be expanded by one floor to seven floors, and new areas will be added to make it easier and faster for passengers to change planes, said construction authorities. Waiting lounges also will be added.

Industry sources said a satellite terminal, named S1, is also on the drawing boards because the distance between runways boarding gates in some cases is too far. Some passengers may be transported from gates to the satellite terminal to board.

The renovation is among 88 construction projects undertaken by the city this year at a total cost of 119.3 billion yuan.

The most visible is Shanghai Tower in the Lujiazui financial hub, which will be the city's tallest at 632 meters.

The tower is expected to reach its top by year's end and will be finished next year.

British Airways will offer daily flight between Shanghai and London
2013-3-21
Shanghai Daily

BRITISH Airways will increase its direct service between Shanghai and London to daily starting at the end of the month, the airline said today.

The daily flight between Shanghai Pudong International Airport and London Heathrow will be served by a Boeing 777 aircraft.

Previously the airline offered six flights per week between Shanghai and London.

Tickets for the additional flight to and from Shanghai cost 2,800 yuan (US$450.8), excluding taxes and fuel surcharges. The full price for a return ticket is about 6,000 yuan.

"The airline will begin offering daily service with the growing importance of Shanghai as a key business and leisure travel destination," said Tracy Dedman, the airline's regional general manager of China and Philippines.

Dedman said the new service will help provide travelers with even greater choice and flexibility.

Bird strike forces jet back to airport
30 July 2013
Shanghai Daily

A CHINA Eastern Airlines jet had to return to Hongqiao International Airport minutes after take-off following a bird strike, the airline said yesterday.

Flight MU5547, bound for Yantai City in eastern China's Shandong Province, took off at 7:25pm on Sunday, but returned to Hongqiao Airport at 7:47pm, after its right engine was hit by several birds, said the carrier's duty manager Yan Shuming.

The flight was operated by an Airbus A320 which can carry up to 200 passengers.

A replacement jet left Hongqiao at 9:47pm, Yan said.

Passengers had reported to cabin crew that they heard unusual mechanical noises about five minutes into the flight.

"At first we thought it was the undercarriage being retracted but then smelled burning," a passenger surnamed Ren said.

"We told cabin crew, who straight away notified the captain," he added.

The captain ordered an immediate return to Hongqiao.

Ground crew established that the several birds had been sucked into the right engine.

The aircraft is now undergoing tests before returning to service.

Airport authorities in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou have been employing new methods of deterring birds after a number of collisions with aircraft recently.

These include spraying insecticide near runways to remove food sources for birds and releasing a special repellent with a smell birds can't stand, the Shanghai Airport Authority said yesterday.

Other measures employed include playing recordings of predators, setting off explosive charges and setting up nets.

Bird strikes most often occur during take-off or landing and can cause serious damage to engines.

There have been at least three bird strike incidents at Shanghai's Pudong International Airport this month, forcing planes to change schedules and causing delays.

Bird strikes happen often in spring and summer in coastal cities such as Shanghai when migrant birds are breeding, said Chen Zhi, a manager with China Eastern Engineering and Technology Co.

Yuan Xiao, deputy director of the Shanghai Wildlife Conservation Station, said Pudong International Airport is built next to the wetland home of herons.

The large birds can sometimes be seen flying beside aircraft near the airport.

Air France launches service of A380 from Paris to Shanghai

PARIS, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- The French carrier Air France launched on Monday its first flight of A380 from Paris to Shanghai, the airlines said in a statement.

"Starting today, Air France now offers customers three weekly flights to Shanghai-Pudong by Airbus A380, becoming the first European airline to serve the Chinese financial centre with its superjumbo," the French air firm announced.

The flight AF116 leaves from Paris at 11:20 p.m. (2120 GMT) and arrives in Shanghai at 4:20 p.m. (0820 GMT) the following day, while the flight AF111 took off from Shanghai at 11:20 p.m. (1520 GMT) and landed in Paris at 5:35 a.m. (0335 GMT) the following day.

"The arrival of our superjumbo in Shanghai illustrates Air France's intention to continue its expansion in China, a strategic and fast-growing region," declared Frederic Gagey, Chairman and CEO of Air France.

"With the A380, our customers can enjoy an optimum travel experience in all cabin classes, as well as services specially adapted to the Chinese culture," he added.

Air France operates 28 weekly flights to Shanghai-Pudong on departure from Paris-Charles de Gaulle, 14 of which are operated on a code-share basis by China Eastern Airlines, a SkyTeam member airline.

Air France and KLM operate 93 weekly flights from their hubs at Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam-Schiphol to nine destinations in China: Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Xiamen and Taipei.

With its partners China Southern and China Eastern, Air France-KLM offers up to 126 weekly flights to China.

To date, Air France launches eight Airbus A380 equipped with 516 seats, to serve six destinations in the world: New York (U.S.), Washington (U.S.), Los Angeles (U.S.), Johannesburg (South Africa), Tokyo (Japan) and Shanghai (China).

Pudong airport to handle more traffic
5 September 2013
Shanghai Daily

Pudong International Airport handled 11 percent more transit passengers in the first half of this year and is set to handle even more passengers as domestic and overseas airlines will use bigger aircraft such as the Airbus A380 to fly to Shanghai, the city’s airport operator said yesterday.

Between January and June, more than 1 million international passengers transferred at the Pudong airport, up 11 percent from the same period of last year, the Shanghai Airport Authority said in a statement.

The airport’s average daily takeoffs and landings hit a record high of 1,120 flights during the summer, the authority added.

“With the launch of the free trade zone in Pudong as well as the opening of the Shanghai Disney Resort, the airport is expected to handle more passengers to become an air traffic hub in the Asia-Pacific,” said an official with the authority.

The airport has upgraded capacity and facilities to handle more A380 flights at its two terminals, the authority said.

The city’s Hongqiao International Airport will also be renovated because it serves as the backup airport for the A380 during bad weather.

It's new but not designed for the A380, modifications will be made to make a few gates A380-capable. Even PEK and PVG only have a few gates that A380 can use.
