Flying simulator opens for free
Shanghai Daily Excerpt
June 2, 2017

CHINA Southern Airlines yesterday opened a flying simulator of Airbus 320 to public free at its customer experience center in Hongqiao area, the first among domestic carriers to do so.

Local residents can experience how to pilot the A320 on the newly-installed machine which simulates the major buttons and operating sticks in a cockpit.

"The simulator can let customers experience the basic takeoff and landing procedures as well as various weather conditions when flying in the air," said Xing Boyuan, a captain with the Guangzhou-based carrier.

The center on 789 Tianshan Rd W. was the first of its kind established in China by the Asia’s largest airline in terms of both fleet size and the passengers carried. It is open free daily between 9am and 5pm.

Passengers can also experience a first-class cabin at the center that the sleeper seat is electronically controlled, and lets users fully lie over its 2-meter length. It is also equipped with a large high-resolution screen and a complimentary minibar.

Does anybody know the average taxiing times to/from the new runway?

Because from the aerials it looks as if it is a similar tiresome 20+ minute taxiing as is f.e. the case with the Polderbaan at AMS.

Radioactive cash drama at airport
Shanghai Daily Excerpt
October 18, 2017

THIS was no ordinary 10,000 yuan (US$1,520) wad of banknotes.

The cash triggered an alarm when passing through the radioactivity monitoring system inspection process at Pudong International Airport on October 10.

The notes contained a high level of radioactivity. They were being carried in the bag of a male passenger.

They were found to contain Americium-241 — a highly toxic radioactive substance, according to the Shanghai Airport Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. Americium-241 has a half-life of 433 years.

Furthermore, it promotes the formation of cancer cells because of its radioactivity.

If cash is contaminated by radioactivity, it poses a serious threat because banknotes are circulated quickly, bureau officials said.

It is also difficult to track the source of contamination during circulation and users are usually unaware of the risks, the officials added.

This was the first time that banknotes severely contaminated by radioactivity were found at a Shanghai port, the bureau said.

Hongqiao airport’s self-service lauded
Shanghai Daily Excerpt
November 10, 2017

SHANGHAI’S Hongqiao airport won a “golden title” yesterday from the International Air Transport Association for its self-service procedure from check-in to boarding.

The title means passengers to the Hongqiao International Airport are able to check in luggage, get certificates verified, alter tickets, board planes and claim lost luggage without assistance of any airport staff, the airport authority said.

A total of 100 self-service check-in machines have been installed at both terminals of the airport. China Eastern, Shanghai Airlines and Juneyao Airlines have opened counters for passengers to check in luggage themselves.

With no need for traditional boarding cards, passengers on domestic flights with Air China, China Eastern, Shanghai Airlines, China Southern, Shandong Airlines, Spring Airlines and Juneyao Airlines can be security checked via the QR code sent by their airline along with producing their valid credentials.

Passenger numbers up at Pudong airport
Shanghai Daily Excerpt
December 29, 2017

A record number of passengers — 35.36 million — traveled through Pudong International Airport this year, the airport’s entry-exit frontier inspection station said yesterday.

Pudong, the most popular airport on the Chinese mainland for 15 years, saw nearly 98,000 people entering or leaving the city every day, the station said.

At least 60 percent of passengers were mainland residents, with the number rising by 2 million to 22.4 million compared to last year. More than half of them traveled between traditionally popular destinations such as Hong Kong, Japan and southeast Asian countries.

The airport has opened 67 self-service immigration clearance channels, which take an average of 10 seconds to use.

Nearly 4 million passengers have used the channels, up 70 percent year-on-year. Approximately 90 percent were mainland residents, it said.

The service is available to Chinese and expats with permanent residence or permits valid for six months or longer.
