AIADMK revives Chennai Monorail Project

CHENNAI: Reviving the Mono Rail Project (MRP) which was given up by the previous DMK regime, the AIADMK government on Friday announced that 300km in Chennai would be covered by MRP. Besides, investigations will be conducted to introduce this project in other Corporations like Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy, to decongest the traffic. However, the Metro Rail Project which is being implemented on a fast track in Chennai, is unlikely to be stopped.
Describing the Metro Rail Project as a cost intensive project that would take considerable time for completion, Governor Surjeet Singh Barnala, in his customary address to the State Assembly, said since the Metro Rail Project would cover only 45km, the Monorail Project would be in position to integrate with the existing transport system. In the first phase, 111km will be covered under this project and eventually it would cover 300km in a phased manner.
He also said that investigations would be undertaken for introducing the Monorail System in other Corporations in the State.
Observing that traffic congestion continues to pose a major challenge to administration in Chennai and other cities, the Governor said the modal share of public transport in the urban transport system of Chennai was currently 27 per cent, which should be eventually increased to 46 per cent by 2025. “As such, the government will put in place an integrated multi-modal transport system in Chennai,” he added.
What happened so far on the Monorail and Metro Rail systems in Tamil Nadu? Talks about implementing a mass rapid transport system by rail within Chennai assumed a concrete shape during the previous AIADMK regime which, initially, opted for the Metro Rail Project. The AIADMK government had drawn up a five-year-plan for setting up a metro rail project and the estimated cost of the project was `5,086.85 crore. On a couple of occasions, the then government had urged the Centre to clear the project soon.
But, later, the AIADMK government had opted for the Monorail system stating that the Metro Rail system would not Chennai which had come under Seismic Zone III (earthquake prone). As such, security of the passengers who travel through metro rail would be in danger as the passage for the rail would be underground, the government argued. The AIADMK government opted for the Mono rail system on the basis of the recommendation by the Pallavan Transport Consultancy Services Ltd, which studied the various urban transport alternatives.
The government said Monorail’s advantages include safety, quicker project execution, low noise pollution and lower cost to consumers. Furthermore, the system could be implemented quickly, without undue traffic diversion and would involve minimal acquisition of land and little disruption to existing utilities and services. Being an elevated system, Mono Rail had lesser accident possibilities as well.
However, political parties in the State, particularly the PMK, opposed the it and the party even filed a PIL before the Madras High Court. Passing orders on the PMK’s petition, the court restrained the Tamil Nadu government from awarding the final contract or work orders for the project without prior permission. But after the DMK government assumed office in May 2006, it gave up the Monorail proposal and went back to the Metro Rail project.
The DMK government contended that the Mono Rail Project was suitable only for tourist destinations and not a for place like Chennai. Things moved faster during the past four years and the then Deputy CM MK Stalin met the officials of Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC) and got financial assistance for the project on February 6, 2008. Stalin also studied the working of Tokyo Metro Rail system.

we trivandrumites will be proud to see our major roads are widened especially 3 lanes and dedicated foot path. But the above developments now seems to have worsened the traffic woes due to following reasons

1. Out of the 3 lanes one lane is now occupied by haphazard parking of cars´resulting in complete closure of one lane. if the 3 rd lane is meant for parking proper marking can be provided so thatcars can park properly. Corporation can think of paid parking so that generate revenue for maintenance
2. Most of the cars seems to parked on the top of footpath thus depriving the pedestrians right to twalk safely over foot path. Its seems police are no where interested to impose fine on such offenders
3. The situation has worsened especially from overbridge to ayurvedacollege after opening of jayalekshmi´bhima and soon to open pothys

4. Footpath should be seperated by barricade otherwise footppath will be full of twowheeler bikes

As we have so many foramers who has got good contact with authorities concerned´we need to act immediately to enforce the law´otherwise we will loose the fruit of benefit

Trivandrum city has 4 lane roads and footpaths, but are under utilized. Problem here is improper parking by car owners on either side of the roads.Majority of the car owners occupy footpaths too and there by restricting or preventing the pedestrians to use it.This article pinpoints parking issues of all important roads in the city.

Natpac to do feasibility study on monorail
MRTS along Kazhakuttom-Balaramapuram corridor

The National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac) will soon conduct a feasibility study on the proposed monorail, a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), along the Kazhakuttom-Balaramapuram corridor of the capital.

The government had last week asked Natpac to carry out the feasibility study on introducing monorail on the 28-km corridor and to submit the report at the earliest. Sources in Natpac said the organisation was awaiting the government order to begin the feasibility study and the notification to this effect was expected in a day or two.

A strategic team would be constituted with experts from various fields to conduct the study, the official said.

A meeting of the heads of various wings of Natpac is scheduled for Tuesday. Among the various scientific divisions in Natpac, it is the Transportation Planning and Road Safety wing that normally undertakes studies on mass transport system, urban transport, goods transport, demand modelling and forecasting, road network planning, among other things.

Natpac, which has successfully completed 500 consultancy and research projects, has equipment such as Total Station, Theodolite and GPS at the centre for carrying out engineering surveys. “Preparations such as collection of traffic data has started,” the official said.

Although Natpac has been given the corridor for the proposed monorail, it would have to identify the route of the proposed MRTS. Natpac will decide on whether to have the monorail via Kariyavattom, Sreekariyam, Uloor, Kesavadasapuram, Pattom, PMG, M.G. Road, Overbridge, East Fort, Attakulangara, Karamana to Balaramapuram or to go in for Technopark-NH Bypass, Venpalvattom, Anamughom, Kumarapuram, Pottakuzhi to reach Pattom.

Monorail has been mooted for the State capital as part of a long-term and economical solution to transportation problems and to discourage personalised modes of transport.

The decreasing dependence on personalised mode of transport once monorail is introduced will result in bringing down road accidents also. It is estimated that 40 per cent of the present traffic can be taken off the road from the capital city once monorail comes.

The 28-km corridor is estimated to cost about Rs.1,500 crore and the Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) of the project is likely to be over 20 per cent.

The attempt is also aimed at improving mass transportation and increasing its present modal share of about 35 per cent in Thiruvananthapuram to about 60 per cent as recommended by the Ministry of Urban Development.

Among the mass rapid transit system (underground or elevated rail system), monorail and bus rapid transit system, monorail is the most suited system for the volume of passenger traffic and the conditions prevailing on the arterial roads in medium-sized cities such as Thiruvananthapuram.

In a State where land acquisition is the biggest hurdle to development projects, the primary advantage of monorail is that it requires minimal space, both horizontally and vertically.

Monorail vehicles are wider than the beam, thus requiring only a minimal footprint for support pillars.

Its nearing completion but some part of the stretch near the BSNL exchange still isn't widened due to lack of land. Why are the Govt companies not giving the land when all the private property owners can give their land?????
