Steak ‘n Shake expands overseas with plans for 40 stores in Dubai, other UAE locations

By Associated Press, Updated: Tuesday, October 9, 2:06 PM

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Steak ‘n Shake, a gathering place on many a Midwest roadside, is heading to the Mideast.

The diner-style chain said on Tuesday it and regional partner Saleh Bin Lahej Group plan to open 40 restaurants starting next year across the United Arab Emirates, a seven-state federation that includes the cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

It is 78-year-old Steak ‘n Shake’s first foray outside the United States. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

American and other foreign brands have flocked to the rapidly developing UAE in recent years. Bloomingdale’s has its only international store in Dubai’s biggest mall, and Cheesecake Factory and IHOP have recently opened their doors in the cosmopolitan trade hub.

Steak ‘n Shake is owned by San Antonio, Texas-based Biglari Holdings, which is led by activist investor Sardar Biglari.

World's largest Cheesecake Factory opens in Dubai

By Andy Sambidge Friday, 4 January 2013 4:10 PM

The largest Cheesecake Factory restaurant in the world has opened at Mall of the Emirates in Dubai.

The US-based eaterie, occupying 2,120 sq m with 526 seats, is the brand's second opening in the UAE.

The launch was announced by Kuwait-based retailer MH Alshaya Co, the first international licensee for The Cheesecake Factory.

"The response to The Cheesecake Factory's international debut in the UAE last summer and at The Avenues in Kuwait last month was truly overwhelming, and we are delighted this momentum is being sustained by opening in such a prime location at Mall of the Emirates," said Duncan Garrood, president of Alshaya's food division.

Eat Out: Cafes galore on MBR Boulevard

Even if you are an avid follower of restaurant news, you may be hard pushed to keep up with the openings along Emaar Boulevard these days. In the space of a few weeks, dozens of outlets have emerged from behind hoardings to sell everything from traditional Lebanese (Leila) to Irish (Bennigans) and American (Hollywood Burger). But let’s focus on this week’s simultaneous openings at the far end of the road that encircles Downtown, just opposite the Fashion Avenue entrance of the mall, and at the foot of Burj Khalifa.
