Stunning photos!

Lots of these places seem to have been restored? Beautiful anyway & love they way some of the buildings are lit up at night.

Jal Mahal looks magnificent after its renovation and is even more stunning when lit up at night.

Hi Jodhu -

You did a great job bringing these pictures to us. Greatly appreciated !!!

Are there any interiors shots of the Jal Mahal. I've only seen pics of the outside, do they not allow visitors inside? Would be great to see up close.

Generally speaking, it seems as though the buildings and heritage structures of Rajasthan are much more well maintained than the rest of the country.

Hi Don!

So nice to see a reply from after ages! and thanks! The reason you've seen only outside pictures of the palace is because the palace was not open to visitors as the grand 1,000 crore restoration was going on. (you should read the article on Jal Mahal on wiki it's really detailed on what this project has done. Probably one of its kind in India) The Palace should be open this year. Read this post I posted in the monument restoration thread. Lays out the whole plan pretty well.

Regarding the heritage structures in Rajasthan being well maintained then it is all due to Tourism and its benefits.

Hi Jodhu -

Thanks for the information. I am sure its a sight to behold when were given a chance to see the completed works.
You're right, it is tourism that brings the money which results in better maintainance. I just read that Rajasthan leads India in tourists traffic. Good to see the income actually put to use.

I recently came back to ssci and all of a sudden everyone has new names. My two favorite posters, Jodhu and Itchi have seen the light and have become born again !!!

Ha ha ha I know! I was too much for someone! and yes tourism not only brings money but slowly creates awareness amongst the locals as well. For example recently the JMC started its operation parkota with the aim of demolishing encroachments in the old walled city of Jaipur and guess what? rather than protesting, people actually allowed the demolitions to go through. They all understood the importance of maintaining the city's heritage and in fact one of the things demolished was a new room created by the local mosque but they agreed that it was illegal and let the authorities demolish it. This would have been unthinkable a decade back and would have sparked off protests! There were some hitches but by enlarge people supported the campaign and hundreds turned up to see some of the major old bazars of Jaipur free of encroachment. On one of the days they even greeted the officials with garlands! lol But the result of this is that they uncovered the old facade of the markets as well as returned the chaupads to their original square shape. They now have plans to restore and let's hope they succeed in that!
