wow ! beautiful thread ! have never seen so many magnificent pics of palaces at one place. the chatris of rajsthani palaces looks better than even the lutyen's made ones.
another thing is, it feels as if there is somewhere a bollywood song shooting going on and Juhi Chawla might suddenly pop up behind one of those pillars have never been to rajshthan but can't wait to see

warning: slightly off topic rant
i wish other states had also maintained their palaces with such care. i know that hyderabad at least was very tardy. if not for TATAs, even falaknuma would have crumbled. at some level, i feel the credit/blame goes to the people who value/neglect their heritage. hyderabad's problem is that it belongs to nobody. the Andhraites who dominate this city have no emotional connection with this place (naturally, coz they come from the more prosperous Andhra region) ... the Telanganites who really belong to this place have no power and moreover have dreadful memories of being brutalized by Nizam+qutubshahis+razakars, so they too have no value for the palaces built by the cruel despots ... the rayalseemaites have no stand whatsoever regarding hyderabad except making a quick buck ... the muslims descendants of those rulers/nobles only keep harking back to the 'good old days'. between the four, hyderabad gets only neglect making it the most undisciplined city i have been to.

Thanks Nirax! It certainly is a paradise for me! I guess this song sums it up: Sone ri dharti jathe ho chandi ro aasmaan.... rang rangeelo ras bhariyo ji re mharo pyaro Rajasthan! Mharo rang rangeelo Rajasthan.... jinra kai kai kara mein bakhaan re... mharo rang rangeelo Rajasthan... which roughly translates to: Where there is golden land and silver sky... colourful and tasteful... is my lovely Rajasthan. My colourful Rajasthan... what can I possibly describe about it... My colourful Rajasthan! Here is a nice rendition of the song:
