Kitchener Street (south) upgrade

To compliment the Auckland Art Gallery development, the council will start upgrading Kitchener Street between Wellesley Street and Khartoum Place in early 2011.

This project is also part of the council's wider plans to transform a number of CBD streets and open spaces into active, people focused areas which attract a lively mix of business, residential and cultural activity.

The estimated cost for upgrading Kitchener Street (south) is $2.34 million. The upgrade is funded by the CBD targeted rate and general rates.

Project benefits

Features of the upgrade include:

• widening the footpaths for improved pedestrian access
• installing high quality, attractive and durable street paving
• lowering the street to provide for the new Auckland Art Gallery entrance
• increasing the road's safety by levelling its current curved shape
• calming traffic and creating greater pedestrian priority by reducing the southern end of the road to one lane and creating a shared space area in front of the gallery
• providing short-term car parking.

Very nice although I question the point of the carparks outside Gow Langsford. Seems like a huge compromise of pedestrian space for a few carparks.

I guess there will always be a need for short term parking/loading zones which is what these spots are.

Will that single motor vehicle lane be 100% shared use zone - with the corresponding restrictions placed upon it via the Road Transport Act 1998 - or will they have a restricted speed limit, preferably 30km/h?

The car lane is a normal car lane from what I understand, the footpath will be a shared space out front of the gallery. The street is front of the gallery will be raised to be flush but will still be a road I think.
