Some of Rio's colonial luxury after the arrival of the King John VI - credits to Marcelo Olisa

"Galeota" sailboat that landed the King in Brazil -South America. From a status of the largest colony it became a United Kindgom 7 years later in 1815. Portugal rebelled against it in 1820 and demanded the King to transfer the capital back to Lisbon. The King refused to transfer and declared Brazil as independent. No war was ever fought. About 9 years later on Peter I son of John VI decided to go back (1831) and became King of the Portuguese Kingdom and left his son Peter second - a small kid by that time - to be the emperor of Brazil. Some years later Peter II took the crown (he was 14) and was emperor for more than 40 years - the last of Brazil. However the brazilian royal family is still well and alive and is funded by the Brazilian state (Brazil allowed it to collect taxes at the city where it is - Petropolis).

Laguna - State of Santa Catarina - Brazil - credits to Manezinho

This is the home of Anita Garibaldi (once Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro), wife of the iconic Giuseppe Garibaldi.

It is a very neat historic colonial portuguese town. However it is true many people are complaining of the poor current local public administration's capacity to deal with the preservation of those historical monuments and buildings :

The Jesuit's Palace

The Jesuit's palace was built in the XVI century and is the oldest public building to host a government seat in Brazil. It was taken by the Portuguese crown when the Jesuits were banned from Brazil in the XVIII century. It changed it's name to "Palacio Anchieta" and currently functions as the seat of the executive branch of Espirito Santo State in Brazil.

HansCouto I really don't want to have to remove your photos but I will if you don't source them. This is for the greater good of SSC to source your photos!

The only way I can show a picture is by linking it to another website is it not? so I guess that you as the moderator have acess to all sources do you not?

However, I would be glad to know how it is that you would like me to source all those free pictures. Depending on the work I wont let the whole community missing all this compiled data.

Faculty of Medicine - founded in Salvador Bahia in 1808 by the King John VI

The school or faculty of Medicine - currently a branch of the University of Bahia was the first building ordered to be built once the King John VI arrived in Brazil running away from Napoleon troops in 1808.
He spend a couple days in Salvador and headed to Rio, where he stayed for a long time - and brought the whole imperial structure along.

But the truth is that the building is much much older. It was built by the Jesuits and taken over by the Portuguese crown when the jesuits were expelled from Brazil in 1759 and adapted to function as one of the armed forces hospitals - function kept until the King's arrival.

Residential palace of Portuguese Francisco Jose da Rocha Leao

This place was built by the portuguese Francisco Jose da Rocha Leao - Count of Itamaraty (itamaraty is a tupi word that means pink stone).

It became the first seat of the Foreign Relations Bureau after Brazil turned from a parliamentary monarchy to a presidential republic (1889) until it was officialy transfered to Brasilia.

Nowadays it functions as a representative office of the Brazilian Foreign Relations Ministry and as a Diplomatic museum and national archive.

Palacio Conde dos Arcos - City of Goias - Brazil

The story of this palace is also related to the arrival of King John VI. In fact, Count of Arcos was living in his official residence in Rio and had to move to Cidade de Goiaz to give place for the King to live there once he first arrived.

So he took the residence of a wealthy man in town, the man who built it, Anacleto da Fonseca. So indeed this is not a palace but a house adapted to a simple palace.
