What is odd is how big is Hangzhou Xiaoshan compared to Nanjing Lukou.

Beijing is also the top tourist destination for international tourists and one of the richest cities per capita, meaning more people can afford to fly. Beijing has only one major civilian airport vs. two for Shanghai so all the traffic is concentrated at PEK.

Like others said, Beijing has a surprisingly large financial sector with all the state industries. Beijing is a huge center of producer services and R&D.

I think a lot of Lukou traffic is cargo, as China Post is building Asia's largest mail and parcel distribution center there. Beside Lukou is hardly an International airport, and I think neither Lukou nor Xiaoshan will grow too rapidly in the coming years due to the opening of HSR lines linking Shanghai.

In 2009 Nanjing Lukou handled 200,000 tonnes of air freight(ranked 9th), and Hangzhou Xiaoshan handled 226,308 tonnes of air freight(ranked 8th).

Both airports are constructing a second runway, and both expect to have 30 million+ passengers by 2020(Hangzhou is more ambitious of course). Second terminal and runway for Hangzhou Xiaoshan will be completed by the end of this year.

Shijiazhuang Airport is pretty small, and the passenger volume is not big at all. But they have achieved 100%+ increase in 2010

By Dec 20th, Shijiangzhuang Airport handled more than 2.64 million passengers, and successfully doubled passenger volume compared to 2009.

Guys, once again, are you sure we already have final figures?

According to this article published today Beijing topped 73.948 million.
http://hkstock.cnfol.com/110110/132,...29004,00.shtml

The article you posted the other day was released on January 2, according to which Beijing registered just 73.777 million.

Normally most airports can't release these stats so quickly...

I wasn't aware that Xiaoshan handled more cargo than Lukou. I guess Lukou's cargo capacity has been pretty pathetic from the beginning. When Ma'an airport become operational in a few years, it'll be dedicated to military and cargo traffic, so there isn't much incentive for Lukou to significantly increase it's cargo capacity at this moment.

Speaking of passenger traffic, I think Hangzhou is surrounded by an area generally regarded as the wealthiest region in Yangtze River Delta, so there are enough people to fly through Xiaoshan even though Hongqiao is close by. On the other hand, Nanjing borders with Anhui and close to Northern Jiangsu cities, which are much poorer than Zhejiang.

I think many numbers are estimates made by airports. As long as they were reported in the news, they should be pretty close to the real traffic volume. Of course the most recently released number will be closer to the true volume. Pretty soon there will be official data from CAAC, it is just fun to collect the numbers from the news.

2009 data were released on Feb 5th, 2010, so 2010 data should be available around the same time this year.

Can't wait.

So in October China got 5 spots at the list of the world's 30 busiest airports. Hongqiao appeared for the first time here on skyrocketing demand thanks to the world Expo, and will be surely out in coming reports. On the other hand I'm pretty sure Shenzhen, Hongqiao and Chengdu will join the list to stay 'forever' within 2015.

Wuhan air traffic is indeed affected by Wuhan-Guangzhou HSR and Shanghai-Wuhan-Chengdu corridor.

Nanjing Lukou airport(NKG) is actually an important transfer hub for people living in Jiangsu province. Now it has one european routine: NKG-FRA by LH and many intra-asian routines. Previously SQ operated non-stop flights between SIN and NKG.

It is rumored that in the future NKG will operate more flights to Oz,Europe and North america.

It should be noted that Haikou is the main domestic hub for Hainan airlines(HU) which is the only skytrax five star airline in mainland China. HU puts majority of overseas flight in its international hub-PEK, so Haikou has few transfer passengers even it is the headquarter of HU.

In the future Haikou airport may become much busier because Chinese government install "Hainan island tourism development plan".

I am pretty much sure that URC will be the next 10 million passengers club in China. China southern (CZ) will start many international routine from URC, of which the most eye-catching is PEK-URC-IST(CZ got aviation right last year).
