Typical kenyan roadwork-no lane markings,no signs or reflectors. This is what led to a wedding party losing 11 members in central after veering off the road at night.Good by some standards of other rds though.

I drove through this stretch first in early February then in early March and there was certainly a marked difference in progress in the intervening period. I travelled along the Chelegess-Kisumu stretch at least once a week in a five-week period and the progress I noticed each time was remarkable. According to some locals, the Kericho-Kisumu stretch will be a dual carriage way. I highly doubt this although it may seem so given the width of the areas being cleared and graded. The clearing on both sides of the road had stretched midway between Ahero and Awassi. Of all the major roads I travelled on, the Ahero-Kisumu was the worst, only to be outdone by the one to Emuhaya from the Kisumu-Yala junction.
Embedded is a video of a near-miss collision along the Awassi-Kericho road just before the Kericho-Sotik junction. Driving in Kenya has gotten better with the improved roads, but the perils are ever present. I was of the habit of driving with my headlights on during the day and it's amazing how many drivers will flash their lights at you when your lights are on. I even had a cop let me know that my lights were on. Few people know that it's a safety thing. Last edited by JARIBU; March 15th, 2011 at 05:03 AM. |

Thanks for the info. The road will be 7 metres long, and also have climbing lanes.maybe thats why the locals think its going to be a dual. They could also be confusing the divertions as part of the highway lanes.
The ahero-kisumu section is appaling, and it will be a real joy once this section is complete.are you aware of the state of the road from Yala to Busia?

That section was repaired a while back but it quickly fell apart. Hope they will resurface it again.

I only managed to travel to Luanda along that road and it was in decent shape. My aunt lives near Busia and she said the road from Yala to Busia is in a pathetic shape. This was a road that was last resurfaced in 2000. And you are right about the diversions creating the impression that the road will be a dual carriage way. One thing is for certain: many structures built along the road over the years are coming down, even a section of a petrol station is being torn down in Awassi.

This section is emblematic of a very poor maintenance culture that we have. How hard is it to repair the potholes? I watched as some potholes were filled with concrete while others were done with tar. Nevertheless, the pace of the work was snail like. It seems like the crew I saw were managing no more than three potholes a day. I dreaded this section.

Diversion Around Chelegess.
The only diversion in use at the time. Much of the rest of the construction seemed to involve expansion but looks like this section was being completely redone. The constructors were diligent enough to keep it watered down and there was no dust to speak of.

Thank you soo much for the videos. In your own estimation, what percentage of the work has been completed? And secondly, i love the songs in your video. They remind me soo much of Kenya and in particular Kisumu. What are the names of the songs?

It is somewhat hard to tell what percentage has been complete because much of what was going on at the time I was there was mostly prep work, with little laying of pavement. From Mau Summit to Kericho there seemed to be little going on except for a stretch that I would estimate to be 15 miles where an expansion (mostly excavating the sides to widen the roads) was going on. And even here there was only prep work going on. It seemed like much of the work going on was between Kericho and Awassi, and here too only some excavation. except for the area in the latest video where some laying of pavement seemed to have commenced. It's likely that this section (about 5 kilometers) is now complete. I suspect once the ground work is done the speed will pick up. I hope they can get much of it, if not all, by the beginning of next year so I can enjoy a smooth ride.
The song in the latest video is Zavy by Kiam and the song in the preceeding video (Awassi-Kericho) is by Franco but the title escapes me at the moment. The song in the video titled "Near-Miss around Kericho" is by Daniel Owino Misiani. |
