Lotus Tower multi-functional tower
Date: 2011-12-27

Two Chinese companies given construction bid

By Rasika Jayakody

The contract to construct the Lotus Tower multi-functional TV and telecommunication tower in Colombo has been given to two Chinese companies namely CEIC and Elite, Ceylon Today reliably learns.

The agreement on the construction of the Lotus Tower, the tallest tower in Sri Lanka, will be signed at Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) office on 03 January, Chairman of TRC Anusha Pelpita confirmed yesterday.

Approximately 105 million dollars will be invested for the project, a senior spokesman of the government told Ceylon Today.

The tower which is 350m in height will be constructed on a 7.5 acre land located at D.R. Wijayawardena Mawatha in Colombo.

The proposed tower will provide facilities for 50 television services, 50 broadcasting services and ten telecommunication providers. Apart from that, a luxurious tourist zone will also be built in the Lotus Tower premises.

At first, the government had a plan to build the tower in Peliyagoda, but later the location was shifted to Colombo. The project will be funded by EXIM Bank in China, one of the largest commercial banks in the country.

According the spokesman of the government, the construction work of the tower will be completed in 2013. After the completion, the tower will be the tallest building in South Asia and the 19th in the world.

January 3, 2012 at 10:45 am · Close Watch

The foundation stone for the ‘Lotus Tower’ will be laid on January 20, Director General of Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Anusha Palpita said. It will be situated between the Beire Lake and D.R.Wijewardena Mawatha, he disclosed. The construction work of the tower is scheduled to be completed within 30 months.

The construction of the Lotus Tower building will cost $100 million and it will be funded by EXIM Bank of the Peoples Republic of China. The agreement in this regard was signed between China and Sri Lanka, at a ceremony held in Colombo today (03).

This eleven storied tower will have a revolving restaurant on the fourth floor of the Lotus Flower segment.

The Tower will also have a restaurant which will be a very unique one in which about 600 persons could partake meals at a time, viewing the scenery of Colombo city. The huge Reception Hall that would occupy the third floor of the Lotus Flower segment will have the capacity to accommodate about one thousand persons.

This tower looks nice but the design could've been way more unique to Sri Lanka.

I agree this will definitely be a landmark for Sri Lanka and there is no doubt about that. But many countries draw their inspiration from flowers. That is why I said the design could've been more unique.

It's a communications tower so hopefully many of the ugly antennaes on high-rises in Colombo can be dismantled.

I don't like the design much, they should make it "bloomed flower".

Hi All

I think its a great idea. We all know there is nothing much to do when you go to Colombo (especially if you dont want to pay a million and/or family is with you) except going for a stroll at galle face green.

This will create more options. I've created a website to track the progress of lotus tower.

http://lotus-tower.com/

Also borrowed few images from the posts in this forum. Please let me know if any one of you have any objections me using the images from this forum.

Cheers

what skyline ?

Hehe, its a good design mate. I know its not the most unique or inspired design. But nevertheless its not a bad design.

I only hope they will give up the idea of painting it in colors (green? ) and use some type of lighting system to render colors.

I believe it must be the plot of land marked in the map below according to the TRC web page.
