New plan for Shimoga's upkeep ready

Special Correspondent
Quote:
Private agencies to be hired for seven years

They will be responsible for cleanliness

SHIMOGA: The City Municipal Council (CMC) at its meeting here on Thursday decided to entrust the cleaning exercise in the select 25 wards to private agencies as a package to ensure proper cleanliness and hygiene in the city. The meeting decided to seek suggestions of the Standing Committee regarding the wards where the package should be implemented before the proposal was sent to the Government for its approval.

Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj, who attended the meeting as a special invitee, said there was a need to lay more emphasis on cleanliness. He said the package programme was inevitable for proper maintenance of cleanliness in the city. Environmental engineer at the CMC, Manukumar, said cleanliness drive in the 25 wards would be outsourced to private agencies for seven years under the proposed package which covered the responsibility of maintaining cleanliness of roads, conservancies, and removal of debris from the houses and commercial buildings.

He said there were 58,363 residential houses and 12,000 commercial buildings apart from 35,000 houses in the slums which produced nearly one ton garbage everyday. He said it was proposed to take up the cleanliness work through 190 civic workers in the remaining 10 wards collecting the garbage through 73 auto tippers.

However, councillors S.K. Mariappa, M. Shankar and Vishwanath took objection to the yardstick being applied in the selection of wards for the implementation of the special package. Deputy Commissioner suggested that the decision on it could be taken after placing the matter before the Standing Committee.

Referring to the problems arising in the low-lying areas when affected by flash floods, he suggested preparing an action plan to improve the drainage system so that the Government could be approached for financial assistance for its implementation.

He said cleaning of the conservancies would be taken up for their being used as parking space for vehicles.

He said the conservancy next to the Mallikarjun cinema would be taken up on an experimental basis for developing it as the parking space. Mr. Ponnuraj asked the municipal authorities to ensure that the parking and setback rules were not violated in the construction of the new buildings.

B.H. Road to be thrown open to traffic on January 15

Special Correspondent
Quote:
SHIMOGA: The much-awaited concretised B.H. Road will be thrown open for traffic on January 15.

Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj said this here on Tuesday.

Mr. Ponnuraj inspected the stretch between Tunga bridge and Ashoka Circle (near the bus stand), about 2 km on B.H. Road, where work is on.

He directed the officials of the Public Works Department and contractors to open the road for traffic on January 15.

The Deputy Commissioner, who reviewed the work on a pedestrian underpass at Ameer Ahmed Circle, instructed the officials to make way for limited movement of vehicles on this stretch.

With regard to construction of footpath on either side of the road and installation of streetlights, Mr. Ponnuraj said there was lack of coordination between MESCOM, KUWS and PWD and instructed the MESCOM officials to provide power connection within three days.

Superintending Engineer of PWD Kanthraj, Executive Engineer Nanjeshaiah, KUWS and MESCOM Executive Engineer Chandrashekhar, and Commissioner of the Shimoga City Municipal Council Jayanna were among those present.

Exports from Hassan SEZ Crosses Rs.350 Crore in 2010

SEZ Changes Socio-economic Landscape of the region

Employment Potential of 90,000 in textiles, pharma and food Processing Units

15:23 IST
Quote:
Hassan Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which has been developed by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), has achieved an export of Rs.350 crore during 2010. The corresponding exports during 2008 and 2009 were Rs.228.71 crore and Rs.329.28 crore respectively. The Hassan SEZ comprises multi-product export units in textiles (Himatsingka Seide Ltd and NTC), food processing (Fresco Foods Ltd.) and pharma sector with a total area of approx. 460 hectares. The approximate investment planned by KIADB to develop these units was more than Rs.100 crores. These units in the Hassan SEZ has the employment potential for about 90,000 people viz., 35000 in textile sector; 30000 in food processing and 25000 in pharma sector.

Quote:
The National Textile Corporation (NTC) is planning to export its shirts under brand name “Entyce” to the US and Europe markets with a production capacity of about 50,000 shirts per day. The Unit is expected to produce 10,000 kg of yarn and 20,000 meters of fabric every day. Himatsingka Seide Ltd which has recently commissioned its new bed Linen manufacturing facility in the SEZ, has state-of-the-art integrated plant with weaving, processing and making up facilities having an annual installed capacity of 20 million meters, which corresponds to 9,000 sheet sets a day. Against an estimated project outlay of Rs.400 crore, the company has invested around Rs.450 crore so far. Fresco Foods Ltd., another food processing unit is exporting gherkins to developed markets in Europe.
To act as a true catalyst of socio-economic development, units at Hassan SEZs are undertaking CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities for its employees. The objective is balancing the need of socio-economic growth with that of social emancipation. One of the SEZ units involved in textile export engages around 5000 women workforce from poor and marginally poor families. Apart from giving employment to women workers, the unit concentrates on giving them free education with nutritious food for economic upliftment. The workers work in a clean environment and their health needs are taken care of by the units. They are provided with hostel accommodation and transportation facilities. True to its value of empowering women, SEZ units have changed socio-economic landscape of the entire region.

Hassan SEZ has been specially delineated as duty-free enclave with the objective of being deemed to be a foreign territory for the purpose of trade operations. The geographical location also gives it an edge as it is strategically located to serve as an international business hub for South-East Asia, Africa, Middle East Asia and SAARC nations.

Brief on SEZs

In short span of about four years since SEZs Act and Rules were notified in February, 2006, formal approvals have been granted for setting up of 577 SEZs out of which 363 have been notified. Out of the total employment provided to 5,50,323 persons in SEZs as a whole 4,15,619 persons is incremental employment generated after February, 2006 when the SEZ Act has come into force. This is apart from million of man days of employment created by the developer for infrastructure activities. Physical exports from the SEZs have increased from Rs.99,689 crore in 2008-09 to Rs.2,20,711.39 crore in 2009-10, registering a growth of 121%. There has been overall growth of export of 1493% over past seven years (2003-04 to 2009-10). These figures establish beyond doubt that the response to the SEZ policy of the Central Government has been overwhelming and the scheme has been able to achieve the envisaged objectives. An investment of Rs.1,66,526.43 crore has been made in SEZs this includes Foreign Direct Investment of Rs.17,683.56 crore.

NTC unit in Hassan SEZ to become operational this month
Quote:

HASSAN (Karnataka): National Textile Corporation's New Minerva mill, a Rs 260-crore composite unit for spinning and garmenting at the Hassan SEZ , is likely to start operations by the end of this month.

"Once we start spinning and weaving by the month end, we will produce 10,000 kg of yarn per day and 20,000 meters fabric daily," National Textile Corporation (NTC) Chief General Manager (Technical) M M Chockalingam said.

Of the total expected yarn production of 10,000 kg per day, the company plans to export about 7,000 kg per day.

This is the first unit of state-owned NTC which is located in an SEZ.

Chockalingam said that the unit has been set up to export shirts under NTC brand 'Entyce' to the US and Europe markets. The state-run firm also sell 'Entyce' shirts in the domestic market through its retail stores.

The garmenting process is likely to start in another six months, he said, adding "About 50,000 shirts per day are expected to be produced, once the production starts."

NTC said the Hassan unit has hired about 300 people and the number may double once the unit become fully operational.

Besides the Hassan mill, NTC has two more composite mills -- Raj Nagar Mills in Ahmedabad and Finlay Mills in Maharahstra.

NTC had recently garnered about Rs 2,000 crore from sale of its two defunct mills' land in Mumbai. It plans to use the funds for the company's modernisation and diversification.

Sleepy Shimoga to go global

Bangalore:July 28, DHNS:
Quote:
Shimoga has become the first Tier III city in the State to have a multinational BPO centre. The UK-based Xchanging, a global processor, on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding with Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (KEONICS) to establish a special economic zone in Shimoga.

David Andrews, CEO of Xchanging and Hari Kumar Jha, MD of KEONICS, signed the MoU in the presence of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and IT minister Katta Subramanya Naidu. Andrews was among the delegation which accompanied British Prime Minister David Cameron on his visit to India. Six acres of land developed by Keonics has been handed over to the Xchanging for the SEZ.

Xchanging provides procurement, accounting, human resources and technology services. The services include banking, insurance, manufacturing, retail and real estate. It has already set up its global processing hubs in Bangalore, Gurgaon and Chennai. The first phase of the centre will be operational in next 10 months.

Nimish Soni, Managing Director (India) of Xchanging said the company had set up a finishing school to train graduates on skills required for the BPO. “We will be hiring local graduates and have already tied up with some colleges to hire fresh graduates”, he said.
British Prime Minister David Cameron sent his greeting to the business unit in Shimoga. “My government is keen to lay the foundations of an enhanced relationship between Britain and India for the decades to come, and Xchanging has demonstrated here in India what can be achieved by British companies when successfully opening up new markets around the world”, he said.

IT minister Katta Subramanya Naidu said the government will assist the company to expand its operation in Shimoga. Chief Minister Yeddyurappa thanked the company for choosing a Tier III city to invest.

“The MoU with the UK based company has shown that smaller cities also have potential to attract investments. The government will develop the Tier II and Tier III cities so that more investment is attracted,” he said.

Drainage project gets approval

Correspondent

Quote:
State Government will meet 25 per cent of the cost

The municipality will contribute 25 per cent

CHIKMAGALUR: Administrative approval has been obtained from the State Government for the long-pending underground drainage project for Chikmagalur city.

According to sources, the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board would grant technical sanction for the Rs. 57-crore project soon. The State Government would bear 25 per cent of the cost of the project, the municipality with 25 per cent and the remaining 50 per cent would be loans.

The city has been divided into two sections for the implementation of this eagerly awaited project. The first section will comprise Kurubarahalli, Bypass Road, Housing Board Colony, Jyotinagar and Dantaramakki. The remaining area of the city will come under the second section.

The tender process will commence soon and is likely to be completed by April 2011. Work on the project will commence in May. The project envisages underground pipelines to the extent of 225 km with 8,036 manholes. About 80 per cent of the existing underground drainage system will be connected to the new pipelines. The present system was sanctioned in 1972 and the work was completed in 1980 at a cost of Rs. 71,000. About 20 per cent of the population is utilising this system.

The new project is designed to cater to a projected population of 2.28 lakh in 2045. Sources said it would take three years after completion of work for the project to put it into use. The sewage treatment plant would be of the conventional aerated lagoon type and land had been identified in Kodlikere village near Hiremagalur for its construction. The treated water will be made available to farmers for irrigation.

Officials asked to take up work on 22 roads

Quote:
Special Correspondent

The cost of the project is estimated at Rs. 88 crore

TALKING TOUGH:BJP State unit president and MLA K.S. Eshwarappa at a meeting to review the progress of development works in Shimoga on Tuesday

SHIMOGA: The meeting held to review the progress of development works in the city here on Tuesday decided to develop 22 roads at a cost of Rs. 88 crore.

BJP State unit president and local MLA K.S. Eshwarappa, who presided over the meeting, instructed the officers to take the development of roads at the earliest.

Mr. Eshwarappa instructed the officials to find a permanent place for food sellers who were evicted from the Kasturba College Road because of traffic congestion and to make way for creation of parking lot.

He said he would get an appointment with Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa for laying the foundation stone for development of the Mahatma Gandhi Park at a cost of Rs. 10 crore and to inaugurate various government buildings which were under construction.

Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj said conservancies would be developed to provide parking space for vehicles and to shift food sellers to a permanent place. He said plans were ready for the implementation of both these projects. Mr. Ponnuraj said the conservancy beside the Mallikarjun cinema would be developed on an experimental basis.

Later on, the other conservancies would be developed on the same lines and norms would be made to collect user fees on build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis in a tie-up with a private agency.

Mr. Eshwarappa said asked the Public Works Department officers to prepare suitable proposal for underground drainage and the remaining works on the development of the B.H. Road and connecting roads.

He took the officers to task for not preparing a proposal for widening the Convent Road which had been ordered by the Chief Minister.

He said the N.T. Road, the Shankar Math Road, Nehru Road and the Ring Road would be developed with concrete roads. The widening of N.T. Road was on the cards and there was no problem in going ahead with it, he said.

The district administration should take action to repair the wooden flooring and provide better lighting facilities at the Indoor Stadium.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Srirangaiah, President of City Municipal Council K.S. Gangadharappa, Vice-President B. Satyanarayan, Ashraya Committee Chairman Ananth Shastri and Chief Minister's Special Development Officer Rajappa were present.

New Bus Terminal, Hassan

Hassan's new KSRTC bus terminal which was inaugurated on September 15th was not operational till date because of the construction of Connecting Roads.

6-Lane Road which is under-construction for the sole purpose of Bus terminal and Belur-Mysore SH is expected to be opened for traffic within March end.

Now 2-Lane Road which was meant only for the use of KSRTC Buses is opened to all Traffic Temporarily.

This Hi-tech Bus terminal goes live from Jan 20th, 2011 i.e. from Tomorrow! This state-of-the-art structure has many specialties within it.

CCTV cameras have been installed in all parts of the bus stand and Spitting is Prohibited and laws have been implemented so that fine will be implied to the people who spoils the Bus Stand Premises.

I think this is the only Bus-stand in Karnataka which is having a Cinema Hall!! Yes, According to the Sources, SBG Groups, a prominent business group in Hassan City has opened a Cinema Hall in the new Bus stand.

A food Court, Nokia Priority Shop and many other Commercial Shops have been opened and many more yet to be opened to make this Bus Stand, A Commercial shopping Centre too!
