New enclosures for lions at Tyavarekoppa Safari
hindu

Quote:
Shimoga: Lions and tigers at Tyavarekoppa Safari will be shifted to new spacious enclosures shortly, said Chairperson of the Zoo Authority of Karnataka Nanjundaswamy.

“Two separate enclosures of 22.5 hectares of land each have been developed for lions and tigers at the safari. It will ensure additional space for the movement of animals,” he told presspersons at Tyavarekoppa on Saturday.

Tyavarekoppa Safari had sent a proposal seeking three pairs of Neelgai from the Mysore zoo. Two lions sent to Tyavarekoppa recently were in good health, he said.

He said that the animal adoption programme had evoked lukewarm response at Tyavarekoppa Safari. Last year, B.Y. Raghavendra, MP, and Jungle Lodges had adopted a tiger each. The adoption period ended and they would be approached to renew the same, he said. A proposal seeking Rs.1crore to lift water to the safari from the canal of the Upper Tunga Project had been submitted to the Government. The safari was planning to have a new zone for aquatic creatures.

Guys, can anyone update the status of the proposed greenfield airport at hassan. As per my knowledge, the construction started in the year 2007.... Infact it was supposed to be inaugurated in the year 2009..... But due to some political conflicts, it didnt happen.... Can anyone tell me whether any possibilities are there for resuming those paused operations or has the project been completely stopped?

Quote:
Staff Correspondent

The State Government has provided Rs. 25 crore

Shimoga: The City Municipal Council has resolved to develop 126 roads in the City limits with Rs. 25 crore special grant released by State Government in 2010-11.

A special meeting of CMC was held in the city on Saturday to discuss the issue.

Repair works

City Municipal Council president K.S. Gangadharappa told the meet that as roads were damaged in the city limits due to ongoing underground drainage and other development works, a proposal was submitted to the Chief Minister seeking Rs. 65 crore grant for repair works.

Action plan

The State Government had provided Rs. 25 crore for the purpose. CMC had prepared an action plan to asphalt and develop 126 roads at the cost of Rs. 26.52 crore.

The additional Rs. 1.52 crore would be adjusted from the SFC grants of 2011-12. He said it had been planned to complete the asphalt work before the commencement of monsoon.

Councillor K.B. Prasanna Kumar said main roads in the city had become dilapidated causing trouble for vehicular movement. He demanded that the CMC should repair roads which had heavy vehicular movement, on priority basis.

Asphaltation

The meet approved plans of asphaltation of O.T. Road and the one that connected Ramanna Shreshti Park with Seegehatti at a cost of Rs. 42 lakh each and to repair Nehru Road at a cost of Rs. 35 lakh. City Municipal Council vice-president B. Satyanarayan and Commissioner Jayyanna were present.

311 buildings identified for demolition; DC promises adequate compensation

Adequate package for owners whose shops will be demolished

Shopkeepers asked to get rid of plastic bags of below 40 micron

Shimoga: The State Government has released Rs. 18 crore to widen N.T. Road in the city from Ashoka Circle to New Mandli, and the process will commence shortly, said Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj.

Mr. Ponnuraj told presspersons on Saturday that the district administration had planned to widen the stretch to 80 feet.

A total number of 311 buildings were identified, which would be demolished for road widening. The demolition would be partial in a majority of the cases. Suitable compensation would be provided for property owners who suffer loss during the widening purpose.

When questioned about the objection from the local MLA K.S. Eshwarappa, he said even he had consented for the work. The district administration had worked out a plan to ensure minimum loss for private property owners. More land on the left side of the road, which belonged to the Government would be acquired, he said.

A building lane would be designed for N.T. Road shortly and setback rules would be strictly enforced for future construction works here. It had been planned to develop the stretch into a 100-feet road gradually. The work of demarcation for widening was on and a clear picture on property that would be acquired would emerge in a week, he said.

Encroachment

The work of clearing the encroachment of main drainage canal in the city would be completed by the end of summer. He said the work of converting conservancy space near Gopi Circle into a parking slot had commenced.

Later in the day, the Deputy Commissioner chaired a meeting on imposing plastic ban, in which elected representatives and business persons took part. He asked the business people to dispose the polythene bags and sheets below 40 micron thickness in their procession by April 30.

Raids

Raids would be conducted on shops selling polythene bags and sheets below 40 micron after April 30 and the erring persons would be punished. Hotels, grocery shops and marriage halls would be strictly instructed to avoid using polythene bags that were not consistent with the specified standards, he said.

City Municipal Council president K.S. Gangadharappa expressed support for the district administration initiative to regulate the use of plastic.

Somanna says more houses will be built for the poor there

Steps to be taken to drill additional borewells

Minister pulls up officials on social boycott issue

Hassan: Minister for Housing V. Somanna has said the Government will develop Keragodu in Arkalgud taluk as a model village. The Minister, who is in charge of the district, on Saturday visited the village, where seven Dalit families have allegedly been ostracised by the upper castes.

Mr. Somanna said more houses would be built for the poor, and steps would be taken to dig additional borewells.

He directed zilla panchayat officers to make a comprehensive plan for the overall development of the village.

Harmony

Criticising the social boycott of Dalits, the Minister appealed to the villagers to maintain communal harmony.

He directed the officers to ensure that such cases did not recur and pulled them up for not the delay in settling the issue.

National Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission member M. Shivanna also accompanied Mr. Somanna.

Mr. Shivanna, who spoke to the villagers, said the Government should take steps to provide basic amenities to the Dalit colony. Mr. Somanna directed Deputy Commissioner Naveen Raj Singh to suspend taluk panchayat executive officer Nagaraju and Lakkur gram panchayat secretary Annaiah on charges of dereliction of duty.

The Minister said he had asked the executive officer to prepare a list of homeless people in the taluk to allot houses for them. Even after three months, the list had not been prepared, he said.

Also, the officer was not present in the village when the Minister paid a visit there.

Give up property on N.T. Road voluntarily, DC urges owners

Quote:
Staff Correspondent
Property owners demand Rs. 1,500 a sq. ft. as compensation

Uniform compensation package ruled out

Shimoga: Decks are cleared for widening N.T. Road, for which the State Government has released funds and talks on compensation with property owners were nearing the logical end.

Widening

With the work of widening B.H. Road nearing its completion, the city will see another major road-widening project. It has been planned to widen N.T. Road to 80 feet for which the State Government has released Rs. 18 crore.

It may be mentioned here that the district administration had designed a comprehensive plan to widen main roads in the city including N.T. Road, Sharavathi Nagar Road and the one that connects Gopi Circle with Jail Circle.

Opposed

BJP State unit president and Shimoga MLA K.S. Eshwarappa, who had opposed the plan, had asked the district administration not to undertake any fresh projects until the completion of ongoing works.

When asked about this, Deputy Commissioner V. Ponuraj told presspersons that the local MLA had approved the road widening.

Addressing a meeting of property owners who would be affected by the road widening, the Deputy Commissioner appealed to the owners to part with the property voluntarily which would facilitate distribution of compensation in an expedited manner.

Land acquisition

He said in case of opposition to part with the property voluntarily, land acquisition might become inevitable.

Property owners demanded that the Government should pay Rs. 1,500 per sq. ft. as compensation for land.

The Deputy Commissioner said that uniform compensation could not be paid as the cost of civil and commercial property from Ashoka Circle to Pearlite and from there to 100 feet road near New Mandli varied. Sources said after much discussion, the district administration had offered to pay Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,200 a sq. ft.

In case of more than 50 per cent damage to the building during eviction operation, the Government would bear the expense towards re-construction.

Advance payment

It is said that property owners had urged the administration to pay the amount for repair of building in advance and had sought certain tax exemptions also. The amount of compensation was likely to be finalised shortly.

Criticism

Businessmen B.H. Road had criticised the administration for delay in payment of compensation. The delay in completion of the work had affected vehicular movement in the city limits.

Lapses

It was the responsibility of the district administration to avoid such lapses, by undertaking the work of widening N.T. Road in a scientific manner, and pay suitable compensation for the displaced people, they said.

Kudremukh may house military academy
Kudremukh (Kalasa), April 30, DHNS:
Quote:
Looks like the Army is interested in setting up a military academy in the town, where presently activities have come to a standstill in the aftermath of mining being stopped there.

Nestled in the midst of green forests, the town could well house a military academy. A senior officer recently visited the town for a spot inspection. Colonel Prakash had arrived from Delhi to check for the suitability of the place.

On Friday, he conducted the inspection along with Mudigere tahsildar Shivegowda. The Army needs 500 acres of flat land for setting up the academy to train Army officials, Prakash is said to have told Shivegowda.

He visited areas from the Bhadra river, which flows on the outskirts of the town, upto the warehouse (sectors four and five). The tahsildar told Deccan Herald on Saturday that the two sectors were revenue land and could be handed over to the army if the State so desires.
