BERGEN | Public Transport

Bergen | Light Rail

Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, with a population of about 260 000 and a metro area of about 385 000. The city is growing fast at more than 4000 people per year.

The city recognized as the unofficial capital of Western Norway and sometimes also referred to as the Atlantic coast capital of Norway. It was one of nine European cities honoured with the title of European Capital of Culture in the Millennium year.

Route map | Wikipedia article | Official website

In June 2009, a long awaited light rail system opened in the city, and the current line is already in the process of being extended, with stage 2 of the system opening in summer 2012. Stage 3 is supposed to open sometime in 2015, and the light rail will then also have the role as an airport train.

Fifteen stations were built for the first stage, and five additional stations are planned for the second stage. Future lines are already being planned, and in the end all boroughs of the city will be served by the light rail system. The daily ridership is at 26 000, and due to the many tunnels, riding on it feels almost like a subway. Now, for some pictures!

Nice thread! Lets hope the two other bigger Norwegian cities (Trondheim and Stavanger) follow Bergen on this!

There are no underground stations for the time being, but it has been said that both NHH and Haukeland Hospital will get underground stations in the future, due to the topography in those areas.

Here is a fast-forwarded video taken from the front of the train. This shows the train riding from Nesttun (a suburban area) all the way to the city center. Please note that the trip does in reality take about 25 mintues.

Very nice thread indeed.
Be sure to update it for pics now and then. I my self live in Oslo, but I've done a trip to Bergen just to test this line. I think it's very nice, but there are some lack in the safety details. Especially pedestrians is not well taking cared of. It also seems that Bergen is struggling with the new ticket system, like Oslo also does.
I like the design of the exterior of the train, but inside it's a completely different story. Many of the seats got so little leg room that they are not very comfortable.

This is the direct link for the trorrent for the film that is posted above. This fil is in normal speed(987MB 1024x576): http://admin.torrent.nrkbeta.no/torr...es/torrent/185

Bergen Bybanen extension blasts off

11 January 2011

NORWAY: A blast of dynamite at midday on January 7 triggered the official start of work on a NKr1·4bn project to expand Bergen’s Bybanen light rail line. The ceremony was attended by the chairman of Hordaland County Council Torill Selsvold Nyborg, Commissioner Lisbeth Iversen, local politicians and dignitaries.

Construction of the 3·6 km extension from Nesttun to Lagunen via Fanavegen and Skjold is expected to take two years. Contracts worth NKr360m were awarded to Norwegian contracting group Mesta in December for work on two sections of route totalling 3·1 km. Testing is due to start in late 2012 with opening envisaged in summer 2013.

The project is being financed with funds from Hordaland Council and revenue from the local road toll. The extension will serve residential and business areas south of the city as well as Lagunen shopping centre, where car parking facilities will be provided.

The initial 9·8 km line between Bergen city centre and Nesttun was opened by Queen Sonja on June 22 2010. A further extension to Flesland is also planned

Thanks for the pics. Looks like the snow isn't much of a problem for Bybanen?

In the video in post #6, have they put up a fence on the strech at 2:20-2:40?
