Career in Singapore.
I've fallen in love with this city, the climate, the culture, the modern skyscrapers. Everything!
Right now I'm 20 years old, thinking about applying to a college abroad and study something, however I don't know what I want to study. I'm european citizen. What jobs are on high demand in Singapore? I've always been interested in architect and detailed planning, but I don't think that careerwise it would be the best choice. Another strong candidate for me is Hotel Management. Any ideas? Best regards, xviggo. |

hello, glad u like it here.
obviously, banking and finance are huge in singapore. but just about any other industry is represented. rocket science (u can work for government research bodies), film making, etc etc architecture is also rewarding in singapore, with ample opportunities. Even UK graduates are seeking jobs in local architecture firms. urban planning is also viable as a career, u can work with the government or in some of the larger architecture firms. where r u from?

yup it does, when the monsoons come. its wetter and colder; although it only gets as cold as 24 - 27 degrees; its probably not like in northern china when 17 degrees is considered warm in spring.

Singapore hinges on foreign workers principally in two types of positions:low-skilled placement, and high-tech and R&D positions for which insufficient Singaporeans are skilled. Alternatively you can check various Headhunter job listings in Singapore to know what's trending.

Muzic, zerg & xviggo,
Singapore is indeed a wonderful place and has one of the lowest unemployment rate in the region and perhaps the world. Here are a number of websites that can get you started on finding employment and staying in Singapore: Ministry of Manpower job seeker page Contact Singapore (this is super useful) JobsCentral (a job listing portal to get an idea of the sorts of jobs available) JobStreet (another job listing portal) I'd suggest going to Contact Singapore first to read up on working/living in Singapore. Good luck!

Although this trend of wait-and-see is evident in all industries, some sectors are planning to increase their employment, such as the finance, services, education and public administration sectors. On the other hand, employers in the retail and wholesale industry are looking at talent acquisition at a decline, as well as the real estate and the insurance industry. - headhunter

I am being presented with an opportunity to work in Singapore by my US-based company. I've been told by my peers in Singapore that standard of living is high in Singapore but my question is: if my salary was USD 80k a year, would that be sufficient for decent living? I currently live and work in Connecticut.

80k is more than enough for a decent living by my standards. A room in a fairly centralized apartment ranges from S$1-1.8k a month depending if it's a public housing or condo, which I find should be quite sufficient, a one bedroom condo apt of around 600sqft will be around S$2-3.5k a month, which is not too bad, if you really value the facilities and privacy. Utilities will cost a combined sum of S$50-120 a month for one person depending if you use the air conditioning.
Food wise, eating out is around $3 to $8 for a meal in food courts and fast food outlets, and around $20-40 per pax in a decent restaurant. Transport fares are considered low by European and US standards. A trip made on public trabsport will likely take around $0.90-$1.80. What's expensive in Singapore are alcohol and cigarettes, and cars if you intend to drive, which I find is really unnecessary considering that public transport is convenient. y2koh - Thanks for taking the time to answer my queries. I will certainly take these into consideration when the time comes for me to decide.

For doing job in Singapore you need make contact with any companies you’re interested in and if you get a job than they can apply on your behalf for Singapore Employment Pass. If you need any assistance for getting job and work permit you can visit Singapore Employment Pass. They mainly deal in all kinds of Singapore Visas.
