Worlds Smallest Sydney Opera House.

SYDNEY, Australia -- Swinburne University of Technology's center for micro-photonics have constructed a model of the Sydney Opera House, see photo above, that is about half the diameter of a human hair. It is more than a million times smaller than the real Sydney structure. The model was built from a hybrid material of glass and polymer by firing intense laser light into the matter in a liquid state to create what to the human eye appears as an almost imperceptible dot, but under an electron microscope it contains the detail and the beauty of the iconic Sydney harbour side structure.

Seems these scientists have nothing better to do. Still no cure for cancer.

Nice!

jada, advances in microphotonics could lead to all kinds of new technologies.

I agree. Hopefully the music performed inside this micro-opera house can cure cancer.

It looks like a micro-organism.

Just imagine - we could be walking around with literally millions of Opera Houses growing on our heads in the future.

You sir are a genius! I wish to invest in your business to build implantable cultural nanoinstitutions!

I've had personal involvement in this project as these guys at Swinburne use our software & hardware to drive the laser that created the model. I just upgraded their interface to a higher speed variety so they will be able to create even smaller and more detailed micro-structures from now on ...

Typical f'n news report has to put 'Sydney, Australia' because of the press centre it originated from, when of course Swinburne is in Melbourne..

Well, it's not like they made a miniature Federation Square...

Did the construction of this "Opera House" go over time and over budget? Did the architect resign in disgust (never to return) when the job was half-done, only to see his or her replacements botch the rest of it? If so, perhaps we'll see a nano-lottery established to pay it off...

^ yeah what he said.. thought the fins look taller than it is. nevermind that though i'm amazed at this, is this like an advancement in technology or just scientists bored?
