Delta Places Order for 15 A321ceo aircraft

Quote:

Delta will grow its A320 Family with an order for 15 A321ceo (current engine option) aircraft to offset jet retirements. The airline has selected CFM56-5B engines from CFM International to power the newly ordered A321ceo aircraft, which are scheduled for delivery starting in 2018. CFM International is a 50/50 joint company between Snecma (Safran) and GE.

Delta currently operates a large fleet of Airbus aircraft, including 126 A320 Family aircraft and 32 A330s. The order announced today brings Delta’s backlog to 45 single-aisle Airbus A321 and 10 widebody Airbus A330 aircraft.

“The A321’s economic efficiency and product offering relative to the aircraft they will replace ensures that this opportunistic transaction will enhance profitability, customer satisfaction, and shareholder value for Delta,” said Nathaniel Pieper, Delta’s Vice President – Fleet Strategy and Transactions.

“Airbus is excited to offer Delta comfortable and efficient aircraft that fit its demanding financial and customer satisfaction goals,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers. “It is clear that the quality, comfort and economy of the aircraft were the right fit."

All of Delta’s A321s will feature fuel-saving Sharklets – lightweight composite wingtip devices that offer 4 percent fuel-burn savings. This environmental benefit gives the airline the option of extending its range up to 100 nautical miles/185 kilometers or increasing payload capacity by some 1000 pounds/450 kilograms.

Many of Delta’s A321s will be delivered from Airbus’ brand-new A320 Family assembly line, currently under construction in Mobile, Alabama. Hiring is underway at the facility, and aircraft assembly will begin there next year. By 2017, the Mobile facility is expected to produce four aircraft per month.

It might not exist right now and there's absolutely no certainty that it will ever exist.

But we can be sure that we will see the A322 mentioned on the internet more and more over the next couple of years, even by professional aviation analyst. There will be demand out of the market for a direct 757 replacement, the A322 will be on of the possible new developments based on that demand.

Air New Zealand has placed a $1.6bn order for 14 Airbus jets, as part of its plans to modernise its single aisle aircraft fleet. The latest order includes three A321neo, ten A320neo and one additional A320ceo aircraft....

That A322 drawing was made by an aviation enthusiast, Airbus didn't propose such model.

There will be no A322 jet in the near-term future. The A321, now offered with 240 seats, can already do 90% of the 757 routes. The market demand for a real 757 replacement jet (thus with the same range and similar engine performance) is rather small. Not worth spending a lot of money on (stretching the fuselage + enlarging the wing ain't cheap). Plus, there is no suitable engine available to power it.

Most likely, the next generation narrow-body families (the 737 and A320 successors) will cover the segment from 738 to 757 size, including the required performance. As part of a new family, costs will be minimal.

Even Spirit only manages to jam 218 seats into their a321s, and thats with the an atrocious, bare minimum 28" pitch with no recline (I may be tall, but physically can't sit down with less than a 30" pitch, much less 28"). I can't see an a321 fitting 240 actual humans under anything resembling normal circumstances. Lets call the a321 what it is, a 170-200 seater.

The a321 isn't a 1-1 757 replacement, but its the closest thing anyone is offering so you are right that it doesn't matter in a practical business sense that it's range is a bit shorter and capacity is a bit lower than a 757-200, airlines are ordering it as a 757 replacement anyway.

Spirit managing to cram 218 seats on its A321s? What the... I wonder what the seat pitch on its "roomy" sections is. That would be incredibly dense (and pretty heavy) to fly... that reminds me of the limits LCCs have to face: having more seats crammed in does not necessarily translate to more revenues or better in-flight service.
