Just a question: now that the A320 family will have the NEO option, is there room for expanding the A320 family even further to have something like...

- A320-300 (with a slightly larger fuselage allowing a 4-3 or 4-4 seating layout on Y);
- A321-300 (similar to above, only longer); or
- A319-200 (similar to above, yet shorter)

I mean, the A319 and A321 have their LR versions (the latter currently being in development), yet I think with the LCC market becoming more competitive, I think adding one or two more seats per row can allow airlines to put in more passengers per aircraft while keeping costs down. The biggest challenges: weight and engines.

Never going to happen, a window row with 4 seats will never be certified because of safety issues. It will take too long to evacuate the plane, the people on the window seats will have to pass to many seats to reach the aisle.

Ah I see. So, what could be a possible (logical) next step for the A320 family in order for it to survive and thrive even further, aside from the long range (LR) and New Engine Option (NEO) programs it now goes through? I mean, it is already a very successful narrow-bodied aircraft type, and I believe it can go further (given the demand for such aircraft in Asia and Europe, and increasingly, the Americas)...

A wider fuselage is practically a new plane. Airbus would rather just make a new narrowbody from scratch.

4 window seats doesn't work, so probably a 2+3+2 plane. Honestly, I can never figure out how an extra seat in the configuration would give you enough revenue to offset the fuel usage of a significantly larger fuselage. Basically you're adding 2 seats width (aisle + extra seat) to seat 1 passneger. But I keep reading that it's on the cards for Boeing or Airbus. Defies logic AFAI am concerned.

Hmmm... if a new aircraft type is made, could it be called the A360 (if we continue with the numerical hierarchy of Airbus)...? I mean, a 2-3-2 layout could be an interesting prospect for Y class, and it may mean a medium-bodied aircraft (not too wide, not too narrow).

Airbus gains the edge over Boeing in airline orders dogfight

By Alan Tovey, Industry Editor
1:19PM GMT 05 Dec 2014

Quote:
Airbus has hit a milestone in customer demand for its airliners, racking up an order backlog of more than 6,000 for the first time – a figure the company is claiming as an industry record.

The number came as the pan-European plane-maker revealed its orders for November and bolsters the company’s position in its fight with rival Boeing for dominance of the civil aerospace market. The US plane maker has an order backlog of 5,703 jets.

Airbus took 248 orders during November and delivered 61 aircraft, taking its year to date orders to 1,031 including cancellations, with 554 jets handed over to customers.

However, on an annual basis, Boeing has the upper hand, taking 1,274 orders when adjusted for cancellations with 647 planes delivered to airlines in the year to date.

Airbus’s faster response to airlines’ growing demand for efficiency is helping it gain an edge in the fight for dominance, according to experts.

That will be part of JetBlue's new Mint service, which operates on two flights:

- New York/JFK - Los Angeles
- New York/JFK - San Francisco

That really provides enhanced competition for transcontinental services, especially from here in San Francisco...

Breaking News ! Pray For Them Just In From Ndtv : AirAsia Indonesia Flight From Indonesia to Singapore With 162 Onboard Goes Missing Jakarta: An AirAsia flight carrying 162 people from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday, officials in the region and the budget carrier said.

Flight QZ 8501, an Airbus 320-200, lost contact with the Jakarta air traffic control tower at 6:17 a.m. (2317 GMT), Indonesian Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa told media.

It had 155 passengers and crew on board, another Indonesian Transport official said. Kuala Lumpur-based AirAsia confirmed its flight had lost contact with air traffic control and said a search-and-rescue operation had been launched.

Mustofa said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact. Indonesian media said 149 Indonesians, three people from Korea, and one each from Singapore, Britain and Malaysia were on board.

The flight had been due in Singapore at 8:30 a.m. Singapore time (0030 GMT). The Singapore airport said on its website the status of the flight was "delayed".

The incident comes at the end of a disastrous year for Malaysia's airlines.

National flag carrier Malaysia Airlines lost two aircraft this year.

Its flight MH370 went missing on March 8 on a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board.

On July 17, Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. PK-AXC, the missing aircraft

And now, Airbus officially launches the A321neo 97t MTOW version, known sometimes as the A321neo LR:

Airbus launches A321neo with true transatlantic capability
Airbus.com press release
January 13, 2015

Read the full press release here

Quote:
Airbus has officially launched the A321neo with 97 tonnes Maximum Take Off Weight (MTOW) having secured the first commitment from Air Lease Corporation (ALC). The Los Angeles based lessor signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 30 more A321neo, upsizing its commitments at the 2014 Farnborough Airshow from 60 to 90 and becoming the launch customer for Airbus’ increased range option.

The A321neo 97t will have, with 4,000nm, the longest range of any single aisle airliner available today and tomorrow, making it ideally suited to transatlantic routes and will allow airlines to tap into new long haul markets which were not previously accessible with current single aisle aircraft.
My guess is that either one of the USA-based airlines (American, Delta, JetBlue or United) may have signed a deal to lease the A321neo 97t from ALC as a replacement for the aging 757-200.
