So basically a fuel tanker that can also carry a few passengers.

Or that A322neo in another version. My guess is that it will have many newly designed parts, probably wings that can carry 45,000 Litres of fuel id guess to make it from Europe to North America in one bounce with around 180 to 200 passengers. It would also make for a nice little freighter within Europe as well as it could do many drops in one day.

I like the A321neo-LR idea.

My guess is that either one of the USA-based airlines (American, Delta, JetBlue or United) may have signed a deal to lease the A321neo 97t from ALC as a replacement for the aging 757-200.
Now that development will be really interesting, especially that it can replace the existing B757-200 and -300 fleet found in many airlines. And, with a 4,000nm range, it will be a really suitable aircraft for, more than just Transatlantic flights, but also on some long, thin flights that do not require aircraft such as the A330, A340, B767, or B777 (but may require larger aircraft or longer range than the B737-700 or -800). Perhaps American carriers like American, Delta, United, and several others should look into this opportunity so that they can expand their ops further... let me look at how far it can go from places like Los Angeles, San Francisco, several Asian cities, and more.

My guess is that Airbus is negotiating a deal with American, Delta, and United to buy the A321neo 97t as a 757-200 replacement--all three airlines have very large 757-200 fleets that date from the 1980's to early 1990's and those fleets are starting to age. There are rumors that Boeing has begun studying a true 757-200 replacement (possibly as part of the program of new single-aisle airliners that will replace the 737 MAX), but we won't see that until at least 2022 at earliest.

Am I the only one who thinks its odd that Boeing is studying a 737 MAX replacement when the aircraft hasn't even rolled out yet?

Considering the time it takes to develop a brand new plane, and then the time to ramp up the production to the same levels as the current 737. You need to start talking with your customers to launch a completely new plane with an EIS between 2025 and 2020. And they need to do new design as the 737 is now at it's limits when it comes to adding new technology to the original fuselage. The market will keep on demanding better planes, therefor they need to evolve.

The bigger question is what Airbus will do after the neo, will they do another upgrade of the A320 or will they also develop a completely new plane incorperating even more technology from the A350?

Even this aircraft looks pretty in the snow... the livery, though: so-so.

Airbus are on record of saying the A320 replacement will not come until about 2025. Airbus have indicated they believe that novel engine technologies such as open rotors will be the only way to get meaningful increases in efficiency (ie 20-30% over the Neo).

These will not be ready for the market for until at least mid way through the next decade.

Airbus and Boeing are both working on potential new narrow body designs and working with suppliers, engine makers and customers.

The A320 aircraft is fitted with fly-by-wire controls, each pilot having a sidestick controller.
