Avianca commits to 100 A320neo aircraft

A320 – the region’s signature single aisle aircraft
Avianca Holdings S.A. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for 100 A320neo Family aircraft. Avianca will base its fleet renewal strategy on the A320neo Family.

“After a thorough technical evaluation, we selected the A320neo Family for its excellent fuel efficiency, reliability and comfort,” said Fabio Villegas Ramirez, Avianca Chief Executive Officer. “These qualities are essential to further our growth and fleet modernization strategy and improve our passenger experience.”

“Airbus is privileged to work with Avianca on this important agreement,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “We are proud that Avianca will rely on the A320neo, its unbeatable productivity and fuel efficiency to renew its fleet. The A320neo Family is the ideal aircraft for Avianca’s longest, single-aisle routes and high-altitude airports within their network.”

Avianca has partnered with Airbus on its fleet modernization and expansion programs for years. In 2012, Avianca ordered 51 A320 Family aircraft, including 33 A320neo aircraft. The airline group has combined orders for nearly 200 Airbus aircraft, with nearly 130 currently in operation.

The A320 Family is the world’s best-selling single aisle product line with more than 11,500 orders to date and nearly 6,400 aircraft delivered to 400 customers and operators worldwide. Thanks to its widest cabin, all members of the A320 Family offer the industry’s best level of comfort in all classes and Airbus’ 18” wide seats in economy as standard. The newest member of the A320 Family, the A320neo, incorporates new generation engines and Sharklets (wing tip devices) which together deliver more than 15 percent in fuel savings from day one and 20 percent by 2020. Firm orders for the NEO reached over 3,600 aircraft from 70 customers.

To date, the A320neo programme has 245 firm orders from seven customers in Latin America -- Avianca, Azul, Interjet, LAN, TAM, VivaAerobus and Volaris. With more than 850 aircraft sold and a backlog of nearly 400, more than 550 Airbus aircraft are in operation throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. In the last 10 years, Airbus has tripled its in-service fleet, while delivering more than 60 percent of all aircraft operating in the Region.

Asiana Airlines to order 25 A321neo aircraft
Largest A320 Family model has lowest operating costs in single aisle category

11 February 2015
Press Release

South Korea’s Asiana Airlines has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Airbus for the purchase of 25 A321neo single aisle aircraft as part of its ongoing fleet modernisation programme. Seating 180 passengers in a two class layout, the new aircraft will be operated on the carrier’s regional services, as well as on selected domestic routes. Asiana will make a decision on its engine of choice for the aircraft at a later date.

The A321neo will join an existing fleet of A320 Family aircraft operated by Asiana Airlines and its low cost subsidiary Air Busan, with the A321 set to become the primary single aisle type at both units.

Surprised on how long it took for them to order the NEO. I thought they would be one of the first ones to order it.

Last September, an aviation firm has offered a suggestion to convert A320s and A321s into freighters to allow airlines to deliver cargo... from PR Newswire:

PacAvi Group Announces Airbus A320 and A321 Freighter Conversion Program

Quote:
PacAvi Group, Inc. (pacavi.com) announced today that it is spearheading a new program for conversions of Airbus A320 and Airbus A321 aircraft from passenger-to-freighter configuration.

PacAvi Group CEO, Dr. Stephan Hollmann, commented on the project: "We view this as an exciting opportunity. There are currently about 600 freighters of the size category of the A320 and A321 operating globally, and this market is set to grow rapidly in the BRIC countries and around the world. Right now the only products of similar capacity are from Boeing. We look forward to the opportunity to provide Airbus operators and others technologically advanced freighters at highly competitive price points."

PacAvi Group will be joined in this program by AeroTurbine, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of AerCap, one of the world's largest aircraft leasing companies. AeroTurbine will perform freighter conversions at its Goodyear, Arizona facility, where it currently conducts passenger to freighter conversions for other aircraft as well as aircraft MRO services for Airbus A320 aircraft. The AdviseAer arm of AeroTurbine will also participate in the program and will provide comprehensive aircraft management services. AeroTurbine and AdviseAer are headquartered in Miramar, Florida.

With that, which airlines, do you think, will be interested in converting their A320s into freighters?

Recently i read here, Airbus is reportedly planning to increase production of its narrow-body twin-engine A320 aircraft to 50 a month within two years from the current rate of 42. The company intends to boost A320 production target to 48 aircraft during 2016, with plans to stretch it to 50 a month in 2017, the source told the news agency.

Airbus has decided to increase the monthly production rate of the a320 to 50 in Q1 2017 from the current rate of 42. This increase is on top of the earlier decision to ramp up the a320 production to 46 in 2016.

What's the planned production rampup of the 737 again?
Quote:
Airbus to take A320 rate to 50 but cut A330 output

Airbus is to hike the monthly production rate for its A320 family to 50 from the first quarter of 2017.

It will also cut the rate of the A330, in the first quarter of next year, from nine to just six aircraft.

Airbus has been examining a possible rate increase on the A320 as the backlog for the A320neo has surged.

It has already committed to raising the rate to 46 in 2016.

But the airframer had disclosed, at the beginning of this year, that it was nearing a decision on a possible further rise.

The A320neo – a re-engined version of the current A320 – is due to enter service in the fourth quarter of this year.

Airbus’s other re-engined aircraft, the A330neo, is due to enter service in 2017. The airframer has been trying to close a gap in A330 production slots during the transition to the A330neo.

But while it had already opted to slow monthly production from 10 to nine aircraft in the fourth quarter of this year, Airbus had indicated that it might have to impose a further cut.

“As an aircraft manufacturer, it is our role, for our employees, partners, customers and investors to anticipate market demands whilst delivering on orders and managing revenues,” says executive vice-president for programmes Didier Evrard.
