There has been a last minute A320 launch customer switch because of some engine issues.

CHICAGO—Airbus is making a last-minute swap and now plans to deliver the first A320neo to Lufthansa, not to Qatar Airways.

According to industry sources, the change was made because of operational restrictions that are still in place for the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engine, pending some hardware and software changes. Pratt is working on hardware changes to the bearing of the engine shaft and a software update. Until those changes are made, the engine has to run in idle for 3 min. following start-up. The aircraft cannot taxi under its own power until the 3 min. have elapsed.

According to the sources, Qatar Airways has told Airbus that it is not prepared to take the aircraft under these circumstances, and will not do so until the restrictions are lifted. Changes are expected to be implemented within a matter of weeks.

Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr confirmed to Aviation Daily that his airline has agreed, in principle, to take the first A320neo.

The PW1100 threw a wobbler during the Hot tests in September in Abu Dhabi. It flew out of there a few days later in early October.

The Leap engine has not done hot tests yet on an A320 neo.

Airbus to Delay IndiGo’s A320neo Delivery

#IndiGo's @Airbus #A320neo Deliveries to be Delayed for Industrial Reasons. According to a report from Reuters, Airbus has notified InterGlobe Aviation, Ltd., parent company of Indian Low-Cost carrier IndiGo Arlines, that its first A320neo will not be delivered on time due to “industrial reasons.”

The parent company said in a statement that “At this time, IndiGo does not have clear visibility of its future A320neo delivery schedule and the potential for additional delays exist.”

Earlier this month, Airbus confirmed that Lufthansa would become the launch operator of the A320neo, after Qatar Airways refused to take delivery of the airliner alleging the operational constraints related to the aircraft’s Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines. A few weeks ago, the A320neo has been granted its certification type by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Last August, IndiGo finalized the purchase of 250 A320neos, which is to date Airbus’ largest order placed by number of airplanes. Currently, the Indian carrier has an all-Airbus fleet of 98 Airbus A320s, and has placed orders for 430 A320neos and 20 A321ceos (current engine option). According to Reuters, The airline was due to take delivery of its first A320neo on December 30.

The delays in the delivery of the A320neo may also affect American Ultra-Low-Cost Carrier Spirit, which will become the operator of the type in the Americas. The initial scheduled delivery of the airliner was January, but industry sources have reported that It will be moving to no earlier than March. Jeez Patel they'll fill up Hamburg by March if everyone starts refusing delivery. ONLY Lufthansa are taking NEO deliveries right now but will that last?

It's time for P&W to make an SEC filing as this (these?) issue with their 1100 series engine is surely earnings material by now.

Airbus will have their other Neo engine ( the Leap 1A) through certification and in series production long before Boeing have the 737 Max 8 with their Leap 1B engine shipping to customers. Not good for Pratt and Whitney though but very retrievable in 2016 if this is the last serious glitch with that engine.

Pants will be getting sweaty over in Airbus. They promised Swore the first Neo would be delivered ( and accepted) in 2015 and as Qatar and latterly Indigo have sworn off delivery of their frames in December then only Lufthansa is left.

I wonder if Lufthansa are going to take delivery in the next 46 hours?

And I really wonder if Lufhansa will put that frame in revenue service in January if they do accept .....I really really do.
