Actually Lion Air already planned to buy A320s back in 2011, before suddenly they announced to buy from Boeing after Obama visited Indonesia.

Me neither! What would be that engine part typically look like? And will those A320s for Lion Air have winglets too, similar to the A320NEO?

It's a test frame used by Airbus, they just quickly put some stickers on it.

indeed. Airbus just put some stickers for saying "thank you" to Lion for it's the big order. and one thing Lion Group will use a320 family for it's leasing company based in Singapore. both Lion Air(JT), Malindo(OD), and next Batik will keep flying with Boeing.

Very interesting. I would love to see Lion Air operate flights to the Philippines since that is a very large order for the A320, and flights between Indonesia and the Philippines seem to be limited at the moment... yet the A320 has the range to operate such flights.

Airbus, American equip jet fleet to stop runway runoffs
USA TODAY
4:45p.m. EDT March 20, 2013

WASHINGTON — American Airlines will equip its Airbus 320 fleet with equipment to reduce the risk of planes sliding off runways, the companies announced Wednesday in an effort to reduce a leading cause of airline accidents and fatalities in the last decade.

The cockpit technology, which Airbus developed over several years, was introduced in October 2009 on the A380 and is now in 70% of that fleet, according to the manufacturer. The technology, called Runway Overrun Prevention System, will be included in the single-aisle A320 aircraft starting Wednesday, the company announced.

"We are proud to equip our entire A320 family aircraft fleet with this state-of-the-art ROPS technology," said Capt. John Hale, American's vice president for flight.

The equipment will calculate landing and stopping distances for the plane at a given airport, comparing them to runway topography and condition, and produce alerts for the pilot if the situation looks tight.

Yannick Malinge, chief safety officer at Airbus, says the selection of the equipment by American underscores its value to the industry where "safety is the universal priority."

Runway excursions are accidents where a plane runs off the end of a landing strip or off to the side.

The International Air Transport Association found that runway excursions were "the most common type of accident" worldwide last year, involving 28% of all accidents. In a previous study from 2004 through 2009, runway excursions were involved in 27% of accidents worldwide.

Another plane manufacturer, Boeing, said from 2002 to 2011, runway excursions in its global fleet accounted for 15 of 79 fatal accidents, with 780 people killed.

A Boeing study found a variety of reasons for runway excursions, including tailwind, high touchdown speed, contamination on the runway and reversers used too low or too late.

Boeing and fellow manufacturer Embraer jointly announced in December they would provide their own set of tools, called Runway Situation Awareness Tools, to reduce runway excursions.

The current registration (5566) is for the Australian entity. The former registration is also on there (the English letters).

I suspect it would be an Australian (domestic) destination—it may also be for an international destination like, The Philippines or Japan.

I suspect that QR's newer A320s have better in-flight amenities than its predecessors... Hopefully, it will have lie-flat seats for C class and AVOD across both C and Y classes.

Airbus currently has 600 orders and their year end target for 2013 was 700. Keep in mind that the Paris Air show is in a few months and last time it was a gold mine bonanza for Airbus.

Quote:
Airbus Closes in on 2013 Order Target After A320 Wins Contracts

Airbus SAS is closing in on its 2013 order target four months into the year after already winning more than 600 orders from airlines snapping up the fuel- efficient A320 single-aisle bestseller.

The planemaker has targeted 700 gross orders for the year, a goal that’s come within reach after the company listed 431 gross contracts through March. Combined with commitments for 102 planes from Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LHA) and 82 from Turkish Airlines (THYAO), new business won so far this year comes to 615 units.

After opening 2013 with a prediction for as many as 650 orders, Airbus Chief Operating Officer John Leahy has raised the goal by a further 50 planes. The planemaker is most likely to exceed even that target, given the Paris Air show, a one-week event in June that typically coincides with large-scale orders.

“The figures show just how solid the cycle for new aircraft demand is,” said Yan Derocles, an analyst at Oddo Securities in Paris. “Even if some airlines are having difficulties, it’s clear that Airbus will easily manage to find buyers for planes.”

Among customers Airbus is pursuing is EasyJet Plc, which is negotiating to add single-aisle planes for fleet expansion plans beyond 2017. EasyJet’s last major purchase was a decade ago, for 120 Airbus single-aisle planes valued at $6 billion.

In the first three months, the planemaker, a unit of Toulouse, France-based European Aeronautic, Defence & Space Co., delivered 144 planes, including 114 single-aisle aircraft, 26 A330 wide-bodies, and four A380 superjumbos, it said today.

Airbus’s order backlog is at record 4,948 airliners, or more than seven years of production, as the aircraft maker has pushed output to new levels with the build rate for A330 widebodies now at an all-time high of 10 a month.
Boeing Co. (BA), its sole rival in the global market for large commercial airliners, won 191 net orders through March 26 after two cancellations. It delivered 82 planes through February
