Korean Air Places Firm Order For Bombardier CSeries Aircraft
大韓航空確定購買龐巴迪 C系列飛機

by Korean Air Hong Kong on Friday, July 29, 2011 at 12:14am

29July, 2011 – Korean Air has placed a firm order with Bombardier Aerospace for ten CS300 airliners in 28 July making Korean Air the launch customer for the CSeries aircraft in Asia.
The transaction, converted from a letter of intent today, also includes options on ten CS300 aircraft and purchase rights on an additional ten CS300 aircraft.

The airline currently operates a fleet of 137 passenger and cargo jet aircraft to 115 cities in 39 countries.

“We are embarking on a route expansion program into surrounding markets including China, and Bombardier’s CSeries aircraft provides a seamless fit with our wide body fleet,” said Won Tae Cho, Korean Air’s Executive Vice President, Planning and Strategy. “The CSeries aircraft’s economics, technology and environmental credentials are key factors driving our intent to acquire them.”

Designed for the growing 100- to 149-seat market, the CSeries family of aircraft combines advanced materials, leading-edge technology and proven methods to meet commercial airline requirements in 2013 and beyond. Korean Air’s CS300 aircraft will be powered by Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan PW1521G engines.

The CSeries aircraft family will offer operating cost advantages, fuel efficiency, greatly reduced noise and emissions; as well as superior operational flexibility. It will also provide passengers with wide body-style seating in a single-aisle aircraft.

In addition to the CSeries, Korean Air ordered two B737-900ER aircraft yesterday.

In relation to expanding its fleet, Korean Air has previously ordered ten A380 aircraft; five of which will be delivered by the end of 2011 and the remaining five by 2014. The airline will gradually expand its A380 service to major destinations in Europe and North America, such as Paris and Los Angeles by the end of this year.

Asiana B747-400F crashes near Seoul

A B747-400 freighter operated by Asiana Airlines crashed into coastal waters off South Korea on 28 July after reporting a fire in its cargo compartments, government aviation officials in Seoul have reported.

As ACW went to press wreckage was being recovered by maritime patrol boats about 70 miles west of Jeju, the southernmost island off South Korea, where the aircraft had reportedly been heading for an emergency landing.

Coastguard boats and helicopters were still searching for the two-man crew, whose fate remained unknown.

The B747-400F had taken off from Seoul's Incheon International airport bound for Shanghai Pudong, carrying 58 tons of electronic and machine parts as well as batteries, paint and chemicals.

The freighter is reported to have crashed nine minutes into its flight after reporting control problems at an altitude of 7,600ft.

Initial reports appearing in some Korean electronic media said the pilot had been having mechanical difficulties before shouting "Cargo fire!" and "Emergency!" before the aircraft had disappeared from radar screens.

The electronic products comprised mobile phones, liquid crystal displays and light-emitting diodes, an Asiana spokesman said.

Some of the products on board reportedly contained lithium batteries, a source of concern in the continuing investigations into the loss of a UPS B747-400F in Dubai.

An Asiana spokesman said that the cargo being carried by the freighter was in accordance with IATA regulations.

Signs of fire on Asiana crash debris

Signs of fire were found on debris recovered yesterday from the July 28 Asiana Airlines cargo plane crash off Jeju Island.

“We do not know if it was an explosion or a blaze that started at a particular point and spread,” said Cho Tae-hwan, head of the committee in charge of the investigation. “But there are signs of fire on the pieces that we have.”

The two pilots remain missing and are presumed dead, and the recovery team have yet to find the plane’s black box. While investigators continued their probe into the accident, Asiana Airline pilots defended their missing colleagues after rumors that last week’s cargo plane crash may have been a suicide to rake in insurance payments.

The Asiana Pilot Union issued a statement denouncing media reports on the rumors as “groundless.”

“At this point, when the most basic facts have not been confirmed, to talk of insurance fraud is an insult to pilots and defamation,” said the statement.

It said that while the timing of the insurance policies could appear suspicious, it was “very inappropriate” to jump to conclusions.

“It is wounding the families who wish to know whether their loved ones are dead or alive,” the statement said. “It is an irresponsible act that tarnishes the honor of Korean pilots.”

A union member identifying himself as Park Nam-kyu posted on the union’s Web site, “If [these rumors] persist, it will lead to misfortune for all airlines.”

The Financial Supervisory Service had similar things to say on Monday when its deputy governor, Kim Soo-bong, urged the press to refrain from making speculations.

Hopes of finding the plane’s black box yesterday turned out to be a false alarm after sound waves detected by search teams off the coast of Jeju Island turned out to be nothing.

Direct flights from Taipei's Songshan Airport to Seoul's Gimpo Airport to begin in March

Starting next March, travelers heading to Taipei's Songshan Airport will be able to save some time by catching flights from Seoul's Gimpo Airport instead of heading out to Incheon.

Korea and Taiwan finally signed an aviation pact negotiating the direct flight service late last week, reported the Taipei Times.

The new flights are presumably for travelers looking to cut down travel time by avoiding each country's main international airports.

As part of Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou's "Golden Aviation Circle in Northeast Asia" campaign to connect Taipei to major cities in Asia, the new pact means Songshan and Gimpo airports will be implementing a maximum of seven direct flights per week.

As part of the same Golden Circle campaign, flight services between Songshan airport and Tokyo's Haneda airport resumed for the first time in 32 years in November 2010.

The flight capacities for Taoyuan and Incheon airports have also been extended from 4,500 seats to 5,500 seats per week.

Read more: Direct flights from Taipei's Songshan Airport to Seoul's Gimpo Airport to begin in March.

According to Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Taiwan received 216,900 visitors from Korea last year, a 30 percent increase from 2009, while Korea saw 406,300 visitors in 2010, a seven percent increase from two years ago.

Asiana Airlines was named “Airline of the Year” by a U.S. travel magazine, becoming the first air carrier to win the top award from three different institutions for three years in a row.

The Global Traveler named Asiana the “2011 Airline of the Year” and the top airliner in six other categories.

Asiana had been named “Airline of the Year” by the industry publication Air Transport World in 2009 and consultancy Skytrax last year.

The Global Traveler awarded winners in 68 travel-related categories, including 31 in aviation, based on a survey of some 20,000 subscribers.

A Global Traveler official said Asiana was highly rated for its unique service of having chefs and sommeliers as flight attendants, holding in-flight magic shows and make-up events in addition to its cutting-edge in-flight facilities.

Probably the best thing about Korean Air and Asiana Airlines imho is that once your are at the top level of their frequent flyer programs (i.e. 1 million miles), then you are a member for life!!! (for Skyteam and Star Alliance, respectively).
