By the way, in case many of you didn't know, one of the most active and prolific posters in our forum, diablo234, has been recently promoted to be a moderator in the Airports and Aviation forums here, and he will be working alongside with me in keeping it active and thriving. He will be assisting me (and I assist him too) in making our threads more efficient and more productive so that it can become an even more fun place to participate in.

Congratulations on your feat, diablo!

Thanks fieldofdreams.

Anyways I also just wanted to say to everyone here that if anyone here has any concerns or ideas on how to improve the aviation forum here, by all means do not hesitate to send me a PM. I am looking forward to working with everyone here to make the aviation section an enjoyable experience for both aviation enthusiasts and non-aviation enthusiasts alike.

Boeing and South African Airways (SAA) have launched a joint initiative to produce aviation biofuel from tobacco plants. In a major step in producing bio jet fuel, farmers in South Africa will soon harvest their first crop of nicotine-free tobacco plants called Solaris.

11th December 2014 - London, UK

Skytrax have confirmed that Garuda Indonesia is to be announced as the newest member of the exclusive group of 5-Star Airlines.

Commenting on the 5-Star Airline rating to be announced, Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax said: "This is recognition of the major turnaround in quality standards at Garuda Indonesia, reflecting the hard work by the airline in recent years, and we delighted to confirm that they are now meeting the 5-Star Airline. This rating is based on an all-round assessment of the product and service, onboard and at the airport. We place a lot of importance on the fact that the majority of customers travel in Economy and it is the quality and consistency of those standards that contribute greatly to Garuda securing 5-Stars. Consistency of an airline's product and service is a major part of the 5-Star rating, with Garuda's long haul fleet now offering Business Class flat-bed seating and 32-34 inch seat pitch in Economy Class. Customers can also experience the new First and Business Class 5-Star service concept rolled out across the Boeing 777-300ER fleet."

This 5-Star Airline rating also takes account of planned airport and service changes in 2015, when Garuda will transfer to the new Terminal 3 at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, it's home base hub. This will provide a new home for Garuda Indonesia and SkyTeam member airlines, improving the travel experience through enhanced transfers and airport service, together with improved and expanded premium passenger facilities.

Garuda Indonesia has one of the youngest fleets in Asia with an average aircraft age of just 4.02 years (December 2014), consisting of 130 aircraft, and due to grow to 145 aircraft in 2015.

The "Garuda Indonesia Experience" brings hospitality, culture, and everything best from Indonesia through five senses, namely sight, sound, taste, scent, and touch, to be implemented in the service of pre-journey, pre-flight, in-flight, post-flight, and post journey.

I'd imagine that flights on MIA-HAV will be as frequent as buses by next year.

On which aircraft, though? A B737, an Embraer, a B757, or an A321? And I wonder if any of those aircraft can do a flight between San Francisco and Havana?

Cambridge Pixel's RadarView radar visualisation software has been selected by Saab Air Traffic Management (ATM) to support integration and optimisation of its SR-3 airport surface movement radar (SMR). RadarView is Cambridge Pixel's PC-based radar visualisation software, which is a ready-to-run Windows application that receives, processes and scan converts multiple channels of radar video in plan position indicator (PPI) view and supports B-Scan and A-Scan formats for more specialist requirements, the latter format is especially useful for radar configuration and setup.

And finally, like a slow death, Cyprus Airways shuts down. It was a long time coming and the blame lays squarely on the government of Cyprus for not doing enough to make the turnaround process successful. Oh well, there's certainly a EU carrier that's rubbing their hands with glee hoping to fill the routes.

U.S. to back new system warning airlines in conflict zones
Excerpt

TORONTO/MONTREAL, Jan 22 (Reuters) - The United States will throw its support behind a proposal by the U.N.'s aviation agency to share information about risks to commercial aircraft over conflict zones after the downing of a Malaysian jet in Ukraine last year, according to a senior U.S. official.

The U.N. agency's plan falls short of what airlines sought in the aftermath of the Malaysia Airlines MH17 crash in July, which was for vetted, comprehensive intelligence. But U.S. backing is a big boost for the scheme, given its vast intelligence network and the pressure Washington can bring to bear on other countries to share information.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will propose a test system at a major safety conference that kicks off on Feb. 2 in Montreal. The plan entails ICAO running a central website where states and agencies can publish information about conflict zones.

"The U.S. views this as an important mechanism to strengthen the information safety net, and we're happy to contribute to it. We hope that other countries follow our lead," the U.S. official told Reuters.

"We're confident that other member states will recognize the value of this mechanism," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Malaysian passenger plane, flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down in Ukraine last July, killing all 298 people on board.

The incident occurred during fighting between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine. The United States said the plane was hit with a ground-to-air missile by rebels. Russia says a Ukrainian military aircraft downed it.

ICAO, based in Montreal, sets safety standards that typically become regulatory requirements in its 191 member states. It launched a task force in July to look at ways to better share information about risks in conflict zones. ICAO does not open and close airspace in conflict zones, and the proposal would not change that. Countries would also not be mandated to contribute information.

In October, Russia said the agency's pursuit of a centralized intelligence sharing mechanism was "superficial" and outside its mandate.

Promising news for scrap yard planes...

Oil price fall gives lease of life to old planes

Jan 19 (Reuters) - The slump in oil prices has given a new lease of life to passenger jets that until recently were destined for the scrap yard, aircraft financiers said on Monday.

Aircraft such as the four-engined Airbus A340 or earlier models of the Boeing 747 which have been sentenced to desert storage or to be dismantled, are winning a stay of execution because lower oil prices make them economic for some carriers.

Jetlines plans to launch an airline in Canada that applies Ultra-Low Cost Carrier operating principles with a focus on stimulating passenger demand through low cost airfares, and generating revenue from the sale of ancillary products and services onboard its aircraft. Jetlines intends to select routes which avoid direct competition with existing carriers in Canada and focus on cost discipline in order to keep operating costs low.

From its YVR-based head office, Jetlines intends to commence domestic scheduled air service in 2015. Jetlines is led by an accomplished and experience management team with both Canadian and international experience who understand the airline industry and is supported by an accomplished and experienced board of directors.

Jetlines plans to offer base airfares below the base airfares of major existing carriers in Canada. Jetlines plans to, where possible, use non-major airports in Canada to attract new passengers.

On December 11th, 2014, Jetlines signed a definitive purchase agreement with The Boeing Company to acquire up to twenty-one (21) Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for delivery commencing in 2021. The Agreement includes five (5) firm orders, purchase rights for an additional sixteen (16) 737 MAX and some conversion rights to the 737-8 MAX aircraft.

Global airport trade association Airports Council International (ACI) has announced the recipients of the 2014 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards. The awards were based on the ACI ASQ Survey that records a passenger's immediate appraisal from check-in through departure at the gate at more than 300 airports worldwide.
