Patna Jn. to have Free Internet Access Soon

Quote:
Patna: Patna Junction is one of the many railway stations in the country that will soon have free Wi-Fi access for all passengers, East Central Railways public relations officer Neeraj Ambastha said on Monday.
People with laptops and smart phones will be able to get a password through an SMS message that would enable them to connect to Internet at no cost to them, Ambastha said.
"This is already being provided at the Bangalore railway station and soon most major stations will be able to enjoy the same facility," he said adding though no specific date for this provision had been fixed it was hoped that most stations under Hajipur zone and Danapur division of the East Central Railways would have free Internet access by the end of October later this year.

Centre's 1320MW to light up power-starved Bihar

Quote:
Patna: Union government has agreed to allocate 50% of electricity from upcoming 1,320 MW NTPC's Barh unit in Patna district.

It has also agreed to expeditiously take up the fuel linkage issue related to Barauni expansion with the Coal Ministry.

The assurance was given by Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde in a recent letter written to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who had last month led an an all-party delegation to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the power situation in the state.

The delegation had sought 50% of power generated at NTPC's two upcoming plants in the state, including the stage II of Barh unit and Kahalgaon as is being done in the case of 14 NTPC units coming up in different states.

They had also sought coal linkages to expansion plans of 500 MW Barauni thermal power unit in the state.

"Ministry of Power agrees to allocate 50% of power from Barh STPS stage-II (1,320 MW) to Bihar,"Shinde said.

In his letter, he said as immediate help DVC (Damodar Valley Corporation) will supply 100 MW of power to Bihar.

"Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB) may ensure payment security and sign suitable agreement with DVC at the earliest to get power supply started," he told Kumar.

Further, NTPC's Nabinagar stage-II will be expanded to 3x660 MW instead of 2x660 MW, he said adding NTPC has been advised to tie-up the requisite inputs urgently in consultation with Bihar government.

On coal linkage for two upcoming units of 250 MW each at Barauni, Shinde said: "Bihar may apply for coal block allocation for case-II projects at Lakhisarai, Pirpainti and Buxar etc. Ministry of Power will recommend for allocation of coal blocks to Ministry of Coal," Shinde said.

In fact, per capita electricity consumption of Gurgaon is much more than Bihar at 1,265 KwH.

Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group Kumar Mangalam Birla had said during the global summit on Bihar, held in Patna in February this year, that heavy industry captains are hesitant in investing in the state without proper electricity supply.

Road transport corporation will seek private operators to acquire and operate vehicles

Residents of small towns and villages in the state could have a bus service to connect to Patna. Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) is planning to expand its fleet with the help of private operators.

Transport minister Brishen Patel told The Telegraph: “We believe that we would be able to expand the bus transport system to remote villages and towns across the state when we have sufficient buses at our disposal.”

But the BSRTC does not have sufficient number of buses at present.

“Hence, we want to have a fleet of 500 buses, apart from the 200 run by the corporation in a PPP (public-private partnership) mode. These would be owned by the BSRTC,” said the minister.

At present, BSRTC operates 200 buses in PPP mode.

Sources said it would reach out to private operators to run the fleet of existing and new buses. In this scheme, the operator would procure the buses, run and maintain them according to an agreement period.

BSRTC would obtain the permit for the operation of buses. All the buses would have to be new — manufactured between 2009 and 2012. Those operators who procure 2012 models would be eligible for a subsidy on the prices of buses. Sources said BSRTC has received a number of applications from private operators, who want to run the buses for the corporations. The agreements would be finalised by June-end.

A private operator told The Telegraph: “Running buses with BSRTC is a win-win situation for us as well as the passengers. The number of passengers in the BSRTC buses is much higher than others. Also, if we operate our buses in partnership with BSRTC, we would not face difficulties in entering towns. We would also be able to avail of the various benefits provided by BSRTC, including parking in depots.”

Sources said apart from the existing BSRTC bus terminals or depots, the operators would also be able to park the vehicles at the 14 proposed upgraded bus terminals across the state.

BSRTC intends to develop its 14 existing bus depots as modern terminal-cum-commercial complexes at Patna (Bankipore), Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Chhapra, Darbhanga and Bhagalpur. At present many of these depots are either dilapidated or just vacant sites.

The Vasundhara Metro mall can be seen in 'later' stages of construction? It seems to me that it should be close to finished now, atleast the structure of it anyway, comparing the imagery date: (June 2010, a long time ago)

Zoomed in and clearer:

Patna has lost its charm

Quote:
PATNA: Even as the face of the historic city and Bihar capital Patna has changed considerably during the last three to four decades with the mushrooming of highrises, shopping malls and multiplexes and four wheelers, its socio-cultural milieu remains unchanged even today. The city has only become more congested and overcrowded.

To a first-time visitor, the city would offer several new amusement centres, including a revolving restaurant atop high-rise Biscomaun Bhawan, a floating restaurant on the Ganga, a sprawling Buddha park near railway station, and new eateries with intercontinental food. But a person, who is visiting the city after a gap of three decades, would find many things missing from the scene.

The Fraser Road, which was earlier supposed to be the Fleet Street of London, owing to the location of the offices of all the main newspapers and news agencies, has lost its sheen and grandeur now. Most of these newspaper offices have either closed or shifted to some other places. The Bankipur Central Jail, which once provided shelters to several national leaders, including Rajendra Prasad, Brajkishore Prasad, Srikrishna Sinha, Mazharul Haq, Anugrah Narain Sinha, J B Kripalani and other bigwigs during the freedom struggle, is no more on Fraser Road and it has given way to the Buddha Smriti Park. The Pintu Hotel, located just opposite the jail, used to serve as an "adda" for the intellectuals and politicians during evening hours, but it does not exist now.

The sprawling bungalow of Patna University (PU) vice-chancellor located on this road near Gandhi Maidan has given way to a five-star hotel. Lucknow Sweet House has also vanished from the scene. The office of the Royal Nepal Airlines, which was also shown in popular Devanand starrer movie 'Johny Mera Naam', is to be found nowhere now. The Bharat Coffee House and the Princess Hotel also cease to exist now. The place where Shrikrishna Science Centre stands now used to be the abode of wild animals. Morning walkers frequently saw porcupines with sharp and long quills.

Ashok Raj Path, where most of the institutions of higher education, besides Patna Medical College Hospital are located, has not changed much. All the colleges and postgraduate departments of PU stand at their original sites with practically little change whatsoever. Only the number of book stalls on the opposite side of this road has swelled considerably in recent years.

Retired professor of chemistry and former journalist Mahesh Chandra, who has been staying in the city for the last 70 years, said although there has been some cosmetic changes hither and thither, the city has lost its charm. Maddening crowds with people jostling and pushing one another have made it very difficult for the people to move on the roads. The city needs wide roads and at least a dozen more flyovers throughout its length and breadth to ease the ever-increasing traffic load, he added.

Full-fledged second exit point at Patna Junction soon

Quote:
PATNA: With the increase in the volume of traffic and passengers at Patna Junction, the railways has started development of the Karbighaiya-end of the Patna Junction as the second exit point. The railways had recently removed encroachments around the station area. This project is being taken up on the pattern of Delhi's Ajmeri Gate.

According to Danapur DRM L M Jha, the railways has already made platform no. 10 functional. Passengers have started either boarding or making an exit from this end during peak time. The railways is serious to develop it as a central place for passengers' movements, he said. The DRM said that a large number of people living in the southern parts of Patna prefer to board trains from this end. Besides, passengers are buying general tickets from unreserved ticketing system (UTS) counters located at the Karbighaiya end, he said.

The railways is developing a spacious parking lot for vehicles at the Karbighaiya-end. Unauthorized auto and bus stands have been removed. The railways intends to make the entry point free from encroachments, the DRM said.

Jha said the railways has decided to construct a refreshment hall, waiting hall and a retiring room at the Karbighaiya-end. Within six months, a spacious waiting hall and refreshment hall would be ready at this end, he added. Besides, the railways has urged the state government to build an approach road at the Karbighaiya-end so that movement of traffic and passengers could be smooth right from the Chiraiyatand overbridge, he said.

The proposed information technology centre of the ECR and route relay interlocking (RRI) office have already been set up at this end. The railways would regulate traffic movement at the main entrance point of Karbighaiya end during peak hours. Patna Junction is in need of a second exit point to decongest maximum rush of passengers during peak hours, Jha said.

According to the DRM, he has been personally visiting Patna Junction on a regular basis to supervise ongoing work at Karbighaiya end. Cleanliness has been the top priority of the railways at Patna Junction. "Efforts are on to make available all kinds of facilities for passengers at this end. RPF personnel have been directed to keep a tab on the activities of miscreants at Karbighaiya end during night. The railways has installed proper lights at this end in the circulating area," he said.

More outlets delight shopaholics in capital - V2 opens door at Kameshwar Complex; citizens take to super stores for variety & prices

Quote:
The experience of shopping for state capital residents has had a remarkable makeover in recent times.
Be it clothes, household goods or home furnishing, citizens now give a wide berth to older shops and markets and drive down to super stores or malls.
From Friday, they have another option: V2 super store, which opened its door to customers at Kameshwar Complex on Frazer Road.
Supermarkets are not a novelty though for residents. Vishal Mega Mart and 9to9 stores in the city have made residents familiar with the luxury of shopping for all their favourite things under one roof.
The rush at these stores proves that the citizens just can’t get enough of them.
“Patna is one of the booming state capitals in India. No company wants to miss the opportunity to invest here. The best part is that people of this city have now become familiar with shopping in such markets. The time when people used to go from one shop to another is gone. All the necessary items — from apparel to home furnishing to household goods — is now available under one roof,” said Manshu Tandon, chief executive officer, V2 Retail Limited.
He added: “Patna has grown into a major business hub. The sustained economic growth of the state is driving the needs and tastes of the people of this city. It is at par with any other modern city. This development has encouraged us to set up our first store here.”
He also said: “In a nutshell, I can say that such hypermarkets provide opportunities to the people to shop for most of their requirements and enjoy at the same time.”
Customers, too, find the concept of a supermarket very agreeable.
“Earlier, we used to visit different shops and stores to buy our favourites items and products. However, the launch of supermarkets and stores in Patna has made our shopping easier and enjoyable. We need not rush here and there. Apart from getting everything under one roof, it also saves our time,” said Vandana Singh, a homemaker and resident of SK Puri.
Sources said these stores attract the most customers on weekends.
“Apart from the desired products, we also get good environment here. The staff help and guide us. There are also some special offers,” said another customer, Satyandra Singh.
He had turned up at V2 to purchase clothes.
The two-storied market is spread over an area of 2,200sqft. As an opening gesture, it is offering special discounts. If you buy a designer kurti, you would get two for free. Also, if you buy a T-shirt for your child, you will get two for free.
The prices, too, are very attractive, claim the customers.
“Price is one of the factors that will attract customers. Products available here are priced the same — at times, even less — than goods outside. So, what is the point of going to different shops?” said Boring Road resident Ritesh Kumar.
Another shopper said: “If you get good quality, lots of options and reasonable prices under one roof, why would you go to another place?”
Shop till you drop, then.

Gandhi Maidan's makeover delayed

Quote:
PATNA: The much-awaited facelift of the city's green lung, Gandhi Maidan, is going to take at least another eight months. Earlier, the work was scheduled to be completed by July end.

Ranjeet Pratap Singh, executive engineer of the state's building construction corporation, attributed the delay to holding of various programmes at the ground and delay in seeking government's permission and funds at different stages. Talking to TOI, he said, "The major reason for the delay is holding of programmes one after the other." Since May last year, heaps of soil has been dumped all over the Maidan, spread over 62 acres.

The facelift work was also delayed on account of the low-standard work initially done by the city-based architect, Ashish Kumar, who is the official architect for the job.

"Rectification of the initial work took time, but in order to save time, instead of changing the architect we sent notices to him suggesting modifications," Singh said.

As a result, the levelling and gradation of the ground, which should have been completed by September last year, is still going on.

After Bihar Diwas celebrations, the corporation has requested the district administration not to hold any programme at the ground so that its levelling could be done without hindrance.

"However, we are afraid that the upcoming municipal election would again disturb us," said Singh.

Officials expect to finish the levelling and grading of the ground by June 20. The next step will be the construction of pathway, laying the grass bed and sprinklers. "We plan to at least gift the Patnaites a green ground by the Independence Day," said an official.

At present, boundary wall of the ground is under construction, while tender for constructing pathways has been floated. Proposals seeking permission and funds to begin laying sprinklers have been sent to the government authorities concerned.

After the landscaping of Gandhi Maidan is completed, it will have benches, automatic sprinklers, lighted pavements and chequered polka-tiled internal pathways, separate play zone for children and bars and iron equipment for the fitness freaks. Outside the ground would be a four-feet-wide pedestrian walkway with raised planters in granite.

The makeover plan is likely to cost Rs 8.5 crore, of which the corporation has received Rs 6 crore in the first phase. A sum of Rs 3.83 crore has already been spent.

Besides, Gandhi Maidan will also have the world's highest statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

For the 65-feet tall statue (25-feet-high pedestal and 40-feet-high statue), the government has allotted Rs 8.42 crore. Already, Rs 2 crore has been paid to Ram Prasad, the Noida-based sculptor entrusted the task of making the statue. It is supposed to be inaugurated on October 2 this year.

@Cosmicbliss,

Its 1000 times better than previous government. But still we need 10 Nitish Kumar to grow and compete with other states. The work have been satisfactory. It would have been more interesting if Central Government would have cooperated. This government will have to do a lot of work specially in Power sector to bring huge investments. None of the government is clean and Nitish Kumar government is not an exception but still good work though.
