Jattiye=female(jat woman), Jat=Male (jat man). Applicable to both indo/pak jat community.

Addiye-- a way to say "friend" "saheli" \female mate. Mostly used in conversation between two women to call each other

Punjabi along with Hindi/Urdu is a descendant of Sauraseni, which was a very important language in medieval northern India. Many important religious documents (particularly of the Jain religion), also important dramatic texts were written in the language.

Punjabi itself became a separate language after the 12th century. Initially it was transmitted orally, but literature developed after the rise of Sikhism and the Sufi order.

True. Many of my friends had the following questions or thoughts, especially before the last decade when India's economy was growing steadily and people were freely moving across the country in search of jobs.

1. Why are Robin Singh and Yuvraj Singh not wearing a turban?

Robin singh is not Punjabi. Before sikh religion, all were hindus and Singh is surname/middle name of the rajput/jat communities of north India. So if somebody has singh somewhere in his name, it does not mean that he is punjabi or sikh. But if someone is ethnic Punjabi and he has singh somewhere in his name then it means:-

a) He is a sikh. If he has long hair,a untrimmed long beard and turban, then is "keshdhari" sikh. If wear "Kirpaan" also then he is Amritdhari sikh( no alcohol and meat ).

Main Sikh communities of Punjab--a1) Jat Sikh:- Most dominant politically and influence,

Traditionally kings, Landlords,Army, police, sports, beaurocrats, with new economy businessmen and real estate agents also. Mostly found in Punjab region and abroad

Apart from being Keshdhari/amritdhari, some of these donot keep long hair, beard and turban e.g. Dharmender/Yuvraj. Some wear turband and trim the beard. This community rarely use some sticking agent to their beard like some other sikh communities. This community is the Millitant face of sikh religion. Some of them use only singh as surname and some use singh as middle name. Most common family names are Sidhu, sandhu,Dhillon,Brar,Gill,Mann,Deol,Cheema,Grewal etc. Jat communities of same surnames residing in Haryana are Hindus as well as Sikhs and in Pakistan they are muslims.Rural landscape is dominated by these communties. These are face of the rough/rusty Punjab

a2) "Papa" Sikh:-The business class Sikh communtiy of Punjab.Mostly found in city/town environment.Dominate the business envrionment, educated and traders. Donot keep open beard and use of sticky agent to keep beard tidy.Donot trim beard and always keep long hair and wear turban. Found motsly all over India, especially in Delhi and big cities and Punjab. Most of them have origin in Pakistani Punjab. They always have Singh as middle name.Common surnames:-Walia,Bhatia,Arora,Sawhney etc.

a3)Mazhabi Sikhs:- Low caste Hindu converts to Sikhism

a4) Chamar Sikhs "Ravidasia":- Low caste "Chamar" sikhs, Guru Ravi Das is very important for them

The 60% of ethnic punjabis living in Punjab are sikhs an rest are Hindus.

Hindu Punjabis:-

Brahmin class-Sharma,Bhanot, etc.

Hindu Khatri(Kshatriya):-Khanna, Chopra,Arora,Sawhney. Some of them have common surnames with "PAPA sikh" community.Mostly immigrants from Pakistani Punjab in 1947.Mostly found in Urban centers and Delhi area

Baniya Class:- Gupta, aagarwal,Jindal,Mittal etc.

SC:-

2. If Dharmendra is a Punjabi, where is his turban and why is he not having 'Singh' in any part of his name?
3. All Indian Punjabis are Sikhs and all Pak Punjabis are Muslims.
4. Punjab means wheat and tractors (remember the Mile Sur song on DD!!)
5. People recollect that there is a city called Chandigarh only the following occasions - when a cricket match is played in Mohali, when surveys say that Chandigarh is the cleanest and wealthiest city in India and when some question is asked in the GK exam as to what is the capital of Punjab.
6. In almost every Tamil movie that wants to depict a northie, either a Punjabi with a turban or a Marwari with a Nehru cap will be shown. Otherwise, people won't recognize or acknowledge that.
7. Most Indian army soldiers are Punjabis - this is true.

Things have changed for the most part. However, the steretype image is the same like how a Tamilian is represented in the Bollywood and in those comedy serials on DD in the 90s - with the 3 horizontal stripes on his forehead and mostly bald.

There is Rajput community also in Punjab. They are both sikh and hindus and in Pakistani Punjab they are Muslims.
