Nice picture! Açores have a special status inside the Portuguese Republic. The same happens with Madeira. Both are Autonomous Regions. They have a local Government and Parliament. This status was created in 1976, after the Carnation Revolution that brought Portugal into a democracy.

Although there was (and there are) some voices talking about the independence, azoreans are 100% Portuguese blood. They were not colonized. All the 9 islands were deserts when Portuguese sailors reached them back in the 15th centrury.

Three pictures from Romania-Moldova border

From Romania:

With a closer view of a near sign:

I already posted this one from Moldova, but the picture was really little so this can be better seen:

By the way, does anyone know if there is any road explicitly signed as an expressway in Moldova? I have been on some roads that are like them, but I just don't remember any sign like that.

That sign it's not very accurate. The speed limit is 100 km/h on the main roads (European routes), but only 90 km/h on secondary roads.

It is, but in that roads you still need to traverse a lot of towns, villages and even cities, so it is not as fast as it would seem.

Wow, that is confusing. 90 km/h on green sign motorway, and 110 km/h on slightly different shade of green sign motorway

Has not Albania introduced the expressway "car" sign yet?

I thought land traffic to/from Albania was completely cut-off during Enver Hohxa rule and the whole border was full of those pillboxes and a "kill zone" to prevent anyone from leaving.

That sign can't be that old. When did Albania get its first motorway and expressway?

No, there were some crossings with Yugoslavia, although they couldn't be busy crossings

I remeber that we saw an Albanian car near Ohrid begin 80's which was of course very special those days.

Some senior party official, probably. One of those "more equal than equal" under the Commie rule.

Once I read a Hungarian article from 1987 by a journalist visiting Albania. It stated there is no private car ownership, but "traffic is developing", with new buses in Tirana, and a lot of mopeds imported by Albanians returning from abroad. I imagine after Hoxha's death, travel restrictions began to melt ...

The article also stated Albanians in possession of a TV set (that could cost up to a year's income) could select between one Albanian, two Yugoslav and two Italian TV channels. So at least information-wise, they weren't cut off from the rest of Europe.

Exactly the same is written in Czechoslovak encyclopaedia from 1987 I own.

Was not it counter-productive to ban all traffic?
