Renaming the Thread
Friends I hope, Namakkal is getting developed since it gets the first Railway project. So, we can see further developments i think....
So, its better we cannot have this thread for Entire Namakkal district....... We can use this thread for Namakkal City and Paramathi Velur(since it is just 18kms away)..... And we can remove Tiruchengode and Rasipuram from here.......... So, we can rename this thread into Namakkal & P.Velur - Projects & Developments..... If you agree, you can support here......

Eviction drive conducted in Namakkal daily market
http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper...cle2800417.ece
We asked time to vacate our shops in the daily market till Pongal was over but we are forced to vacate immediately, K. Kasturi (56) hurriedly said as she returned to assist her husband Kalimuthu to remove the asbestos sheets from the shed erected by them in the market. We used to have good business for Pongal but this year there is no hope, they lamented. She was among the many others who have been selling vegetables in that place for nearly three decades and were evicted amidst heavy police security. More than 150 police personnel headed by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) G. Subbulakshmi, three DSPs and six inspectors were present during the eviction. All the shops nearly 120 sheds were evicted from the 98 cents of land located near the Namakkal municipal office premises as the writ petition filed by the merchants in the Madras High Court contesting the revenue and Municipal authorities who asked them to vacate that place was dismissed on Thursday. The vendors claimed that they moved to this site many years ago and spent nearly Rs. 50,000 each to raise the shallow place, build the cement flooring and erect the sheds on steel pipes to make the place usable. Officials who came to the spot with earth movers gave the shopkeepers time till afternoon to take their vegetables and belongings to safer places. They had difficulty in removing the sheets as they said that they were only used to selling vegetables and were not used to removing the sheets and heavy iron pipes. There was a little resistance from them seeking more time but in vain. Municipal officials said that they asked the merchants to vacate the temporary place as the district administration and municipality had planned to set up a park on an area of 1.5 acres of land that included the daily market area that was encroached upon by those sheds. The merchants have been provided with 2.5 acres of alternative land at the Weekly Market on an area of seven acres of land on the Tiruchengode Road, Municipal Engineer and Commissioner In-charge N. Kamalanathan told The Hindu . According to him the daily market is one piece of land that is leased for a period of three years to a single lessee, who in turn rents it to the traders who pay a rent to him. They can make use of that space and sell the vegetables and not erect shop-like structures, he added. The existing three-year lease period comes to an end on March 31, 2012, and these shopkeepers can continue selling vegetables at the newly allotted place till that day, the engineer said. |

Salem-Namakkal-Karur broad gauge work completed ![]() The much awaited Salem Namakkal Karur new broad gauge railway line is expected to be thrown open for freight traffic shortly after inspection by Commissioner of Railway Safety. The project, undertaken at a cost of Rs.760 crore, covers 85 km and has been completed in two phases Salem to Namakkal (53 km), and Namakkal to Karur (32 km). The 85-km-long track between Salem and Karur has culverts, 80 over bridges and under passes, including an 800-m-long Vangal bridge at Karur. Construction of railway stations is nearing completion. Stations The sector has stations that include, Mallur, Rasipuram, Puduchatram, Kalangani, Namakkal, Laduvdi, Mohanur, Vangal and Karur. Trial run of train engine from Salem to Mohanur was done in March 2011, and along Mohanur to Karur in December 2011. Salem Divisional Railway Manager Sujatha Jayaraj said that track works had been completed on the sector and works are underway to construct stations. Recruitment of station masters and other personnel were in progress, Ms. Jayaraj added. The project that was initially estimated at Rs. 230 crore in 1996-97, had been revised to Rs. 740 crore. Started in 1998, land acquisitions, litigations, inadequate allotment of funds etc, had delayed it for 14 years. Once commissioned, the travel distance between Salem and Karur will be reduced by 45 km as currently trains bound for Karur, from Salem have to go via Erode. A senior railway engineer pointed out that freight traffic is expected to begin any time now. Passenger traffic will begin in June after inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Once commissioned, it is expected to improve the economic and industrial activities in the three districts. |
