IAG Doesn't Rule Out Japan Airlines Stake, Venture - Bloomberg News
30 March 2011
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

International Consolidated Airlines Group SA chief executive Willie Walsh said his company could invest in Japan Airlines Corp. "if the opportunity arises," Bloomberg News reported late Tuesday.

"If the opportunity arises we would definitely be looking at deepening the relationship and we wouldn't rule out some equity participation," he said, according to Bloomberg on its website.

His company, the result of a merger between British Airways and Spain's Iberia, are also exploring a joint venture with JAL, the report said.

The new livery:

Because of JALs recent financial problems it will take some time before all planes will get the new livery, it will be applied with the next scheduled paint job for the plane.

ANA's LCC got a name and look.

Peach

Budget airline goes for a Peach of an image

The operator of Japan's newest budget carrier announced Tuesday the airline will operate under the brand name Peach.

The company also changed its name to Peach Aviation Ltd. from A&F Aviation Co.

The company said it chose the name based on the fruit's Asian origin and because it invokes a youthful, energetic and generous image. To embody the image, the carrier's aircraft will be painted pink and fuchsia.

Based at Kansai International Airport, the low-cost carrier plans to start domestic flights next March, connecting Fukuoka and Sapporo. International flights between Kansai International and Seoul are expected to start next May

All Nippon Defers Four 787s, Predicts Profit Drop After Japan Earthquake
Bloomberg
Jul 29, 2011 7:15 PM GMT+0800

All Nippon Airways Co., the first customer for Boeing Co. (BA) 787, deferred deliveries of four Dreamliners and forecast a 14 percent decline in full-year profit after a tsunami disrupted travel in Japan.

The carrier will receive 20 Dreamliners in the two years ended March 31, 2013, compared with the 24 previously planned, spokeswoman Megumi Tezuka said by phone today. The Tokyo-based airline made the change as it adjusts flight schedules, she said.

ANA’s net income will likely decline to 20 billion yen ($258 million) in the year ending March 31, as a power shortage following a March 11 earthquake and tsunami damps travel. The carrier also has to contend with fuel prices that have jumped 52 percent in a year and a global travel slowdown that has caused Singapore Airlines Ltd. and Air France-KLM Group to pare growth.

“The impact from the earthquake is likely to have a lasting effect this year,” said Ryota Himeno, an analyst at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities Co. “Demand for domestic travel is dropping as people avoid flying.”

In the fiscal first quarter, ANA had a loss of 8.5 billion yen, compared with a loss of 5.3 billion yen a year earlier, it said in a statement today. Sales were little changed at 305 billion yen.

The carrier fell 1.5 percent to 261 yen at the 3 p.m. end of trading in Tokyo. The earnings were announced after the market closed.
Dreamliner Schedule

ANA will receive 12 Dreamliners before March 31, down from a planned 14, Tezuka said. It will get eight more next fiscal year, instead of 10. Boeing has said it intends to deliver the first 787 by the end of September.

ANA’s passenger numbers on domestic routes plunged 20 percent from a year earlier in April, following the tsunami, which crippled a nuclear-power plant. The tally dropped more than 10 percent in May and June, according to data on the carrier’s website.

Passenger numbers on ANA’s overseas routes rose 4 percent in the fiscal first quarter as the carrier added flights following the opening of a new terminal at Tokyo’s Haneda airport. Japan Airlines Corp. has also cut overseas services as part of a restructuring plan.

All Nippon May Start Flights to Three European Cities as 787 Enters Fleet
Bloomberg
Aug 9, 2011 1:00 AM GMT+0800

All Nippon Airways Co., due to receive the first Boeing Co. (BA) 787 next month, said the aircraft may allow it to add as many as three European routes that wouldn’t support larger planes.

“The 787 presents us with a big opportunity,” President Shinichiro Ito said in an interview in Tokyo on Aug. 1. The carrier aims to start Dreamliner flights to Europe from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport in February, he said. He declined to elaborate on the possible destinations.

Boeing rolled out the first 787 painted in ANA’s livery on Aug. 6 at its plant in Everett, Washington as it prepares to begin deliveries of the aircraft following more than three years of delays. The planes may allow ANA to add new routes in Europe and North America as they can fly further than aircraft of a similar size and are about 20 percent more fuel efficient.

ANA, which has ordered 55 Dreamliners, is due to get 12 of the planes by the end of March. Another eight will be handed over in the subsequent 12 months.

Tokyo-based ANA last year began flights to Munich, its fourth destination in Europe after London, Paris and Frankfurt. It is also due to begin a venture on European routes with Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LHA) in October.
Overseas Expansion

ANA is bolstering its overseas network following increases in capacity at Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports, and cuts made by Japan Airlines Co. as part of a restructuring plan. Its international flights will expand 16 percent in the year started April 1, compared with a 2 percent expansion for domestic services, according to its website. New routes in Asia this year include Manila and Jakarta.

The carrier’s first commercial Dreamliner flight will be a one-off charter service to Hong Kong from Narita. After that, the 787s will initially be used for scheduled domestic services.

ANA’s shares fell 1.2 percent to 246 yen as of 3 p.m. close of trading in Tokyo yesterday. The company has plummeted 19 percent this year, compared with an 11 percent drop in the Nikkei 225 Stock Average.

ANA, which had 229 planes in its fleet at the end of June, is also investing in two low-cost carriers amid rising competition from overseas budget airlines including Shanghai- based Spring Airlines and Qantas Airways Ltd.’s Jetstar.

AirAsia Japan Co. and Peach Aviation Ltd. won’t clash as they will operate from different bases and target different markets, Ito said.

“The airlines won’t be competing against each other,” he said.

Peach, formed by ANA and Hong Kong-based First Eastern Investment Group, will start domestic flights from Osaka’s Kansai airport by March. The airline will lease 10 Airbus SAS A320 aircraft and it aims to carry 6 million passengers within five years.

AirAsia Japan, a venture with AirAsia Bhd., Asia’s biggest discount carrier, will begin flights in August next year from a hub at Narita. It will operate on both domestic and international routes.

But what everybody knows is that Haneda - Frankfurt (in addition to daily 77W on Narita - Frankfurt) will be ANA 787's first long-haul route.
One might speculate whether this can be counted as one of the three routes mentioned.

JAL Reports Solid Profit, Raises Outlook
By HIROYUKI KACHI

TOKYO—Japan Airlines Corp. said Tuesday that it generated solid earnings for its fiscal first half and expects to make its biggest full-year operating profit in nearly a decade, in a sign that its efforts to cut costs are paying off.

The results show how the airline, commonly known as JAL, is benefiting from efforts to streamline its operations after it filed for Japan's biggest ever nonfinancial bankruptcy protection in 2010. JAL has withdrawn from unprofitable flight services, streamlined its fleet and cut operating expenses.

The collapse of the former national flag carrier meant JAL slipped to second place in terms of passenger numbers in the last fiscal year. But its cost-cutting efforts appear to be bearing fruit, as the company's latest profit outlook is much bigger than Japan's largest carrier, All Nippon Airways Co.

For the full business year ending March 2012, the company, which remains unlisted after its bankruptcy, set a new earnings outlook. It now expects a net profit of ¥120 billion ($1.54 billion), considerably higher than its previous forecast for ¥75.7 billion, as well as an operating profit of ¥140 billion and revenue of ¥1.15 trillion.

A spokesman at JAL said the projected operating profit would be the company's biggest since the fiscal year starting in 2003.

For the first half ended Sept. 30, JAL said it generated a net profit of ¥97.4 billion. Although it didn't provide year-earlier numbers, the interim result accounted for about 81% of the airline's targeted profit of ¥120 billion for the full business year.

JAL also posted an operating profit of ¥106.1 billion on revenue of ¥599.8 billion for the first half.

Travel demand is picking up after a temporary falloff in the wake of the March 11 disasters. JAL said the number of passengers using its international flight services fell 29.6% from a year earlier in the second quarter, while passengers using its domestic services fell by 18.3%

But the figures were an improvement compared with the April-June quarter, when international and domestic flight passengers fell 42.3% and 28.2%, respectively, from a year earlier.

All Nippon Airways said last week that its net profit for the first half ended September shot up 72% to ¥22.86 billion on a 3% gain in revenue to ¥704.84 billion. The airline kept intact its outlook for net profit and operating profit at ¥20 billion and ¥70 billion, respectively.
