We should approve this at the earliest but i know it will take 2-3 years to decide and 6-7 years to built.

These railway lines in NE are quite unknown. Infact they are a challenge too. for eg dimapur-kohima 120 km line has 27 tunnels in it, longest being some 3.5 km.

there are several tunnels in kumarghat-agartala section.

lumding-kumarghat gauge conversion is in progress.

So also is rangiya-murkongselek

and new line harmuti- naharlagun- itanagar is approved, tenders done, conracts awarded.

and now this project has also kicked off..

also theres a road-cum-rail bridge at saraighat and jogigompha.

and another rail-cum-road bruidge of 5 km lebngth (longest r+r bridge in world) planned at pasighat section towards dibrugarh.

TELEGRAPH
Let us lay tracks, civilians tell rail

A STAFF REPORTER
Jorhat, May 3: An organisation has given a proposal to the NF Railways to construct the loop line from Mariani to join the tracks here at its own cost if the railway supplies the materials.

The Jorhat Bikash Committee along with other organisations like the Jorhat Rail Sewa Suraksha Samiti and Upper Assam Chamber of Commerce has been demanding the construction of the loop line.

Niranjan Jain, president of Jorhat Bikash Committee, said their request for a loop line was accepted long back by the railways but it was taking a long time to construct it, which would enable long-distance trains to curve along the tracks at Mariani and meet Jorhat railway station.

The demand for the loop line was given at a high-level meeting, which was attended by DoNER minister B.K. Handique, deputy commissioner R.C. Jain, NF Railways officials and heads of different organisations, in September last year.

Jain said more than 100 years had elapsed since the railways established a station here, but till date not a single long-distance train either to Calcutta or Delhi passed through this place despite railways earning about Rs 1 crore monthly on an average.

“We can construct the 200 metre loop line at our own cost if the railway supplies iron tracks, chips and wooden beams. An engineer with the technical knowhow and a contractor employed by the railways can be pressed into service. We have submitted this proposal to Keshab Chandra, general manger, NFR, Maligaon, and to the divisional railway manager based at Tinsukia,” Jain said.

Secretary to the NFR general manager, Hari Singh, said it was not feasible for the railways, a central government organisation, to allot work to a private body, which might later claim rights to the laid track. Moreover, the construction of tracks requires technical specifications and guidelines, something impossible for civilians to do.

“We are aware of the delay but for the railways, work is done on a priority basis and there is a lengthy process also to get any work sanctioned. At present, the Northeast is where the maximum amount of work is being done by the railways whether it is financially viable or not.”

“The laying of the Lumding Silchar railway track and some other schemes, which may not be financially very profitable, but such things are being done for social development. Before the commencement of any work everything is taken into account and it is not that we are neglecting Jorhat,” he said.

At present, the priority was to connect all the state capitals in Northeast. Agartala has been connected and survey is going on for laying tracks to Shillong and Mizoram. Next will be Imphal, Kohima and Itanagar.

The various organisations here have been demanding double tracking, extension of platforms, an overbridge, station upgrade and another rake shed.

Maitree Express runs for three more years

New Delhi, May 6 (bdnews24.com)—Bangladesh and India have clinched a deal finalising the alignment for the proposed Akhaura-Agartala rail-link.

The two neighbours also renewed the bilateral agreement for running Maitree Express between Kolkata and Dhaka for three more years.

Top officials of India and Bangladesh discussed and accepted the alignment for the proposed 14-kilometer-long rail-link in the Inter-Governmental Railway Meet in New Delhi.

The four-day-long parleys between Bangladesh and Indian Railways came to an end on Friday.

Officials of India's Ministry of Railways said that the two sides also had detailed discussion on the topographical survey along the alignment of the proposed rail-link.

Bangladesh and India had on April 10, 2008 signed a bilateral agreement to run a passenger train – Maitree Express – between Kolkata and Dhaka Cantonment.

The bi-weekly train was introduced on April 14, 2008. The agreement was valid for three years and extendable for similar periods of three years at a time.

It was accordingly extended by mutual consent of the two countries during the meeting in New Delhi.

During the Inter-Governmental Railway Meet, Dhaka and Delhi also agreed to explore ways to reduce transit time of the Maitree Express "within the prevailing system of working by lessening detention at stations on either end".

The change would become effective from the next time table of 2011 or earlier, said Indian Railways officials.

The top officials of the Indian and Bangladesh Railways also discussed a proposal to introduce a luggage handling system on Maitree Express on the line of airlines.

They also decided to open a new ticket counter for Maitree Express at Kolkata Station.

During prime minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to New Delhi in January 2010, India and Bangladesh had agreed to lay tracks between Akhaura and Agartala.

It was agreed that the construction of the proposed Akhaura – Agartala railway link would be financed by a grant from India.

The Indian government is likely to spend an estimated amount of Indian Rupees 251 crore for the rail link, which New Delhi plans to bring to reality within three to four years.

The director-general of Bangladesh Railways, Mohammed Tawhid Ul Anwar Chowdhury led the five-member delegation from Dhaka to Delhi for the Inter Governmental Railway Meet with top officials of Indian Railways.

Bangladesh and India hold Inter Governmental Railway Meet once every six months.

Officials of Indian Railways said in New Delhi that the feasibility survey on the Bangladesh side was underway at present. The preliminary survey on the Indian side had already been done, they added.

A joint team of Indian and Bangladesh railway officials have been working on the project, which will link Agartala, the capital of northeastern Indian state of Tripura, with Akhaura in Bangladesh.

New Delhi has been keen to establish the Agartala-Akhaura rail-link as it would pave the way for connectivity between India's West Bengal State and Tripura through Bangladesh.

Until a few years ago, Tripura only had a nominal rail-head that linked one of its northernmost towns with neighbouring State of Assam and then with rest of India. Agartala was brought within the Indian Railways' networks in 2008.

The North-Eastern Frontier Railways of the Indian Railways runs passenger trains between Agartala and Silchar in southern Assam.

The Indian government already initiated works for upgrading the Silchar-Agartala rail-line from Meter Gauge to Broad Gauge.

Besides, surveys for extending the rail-link to Sabroom in southern Tripura. Sabroom is also very close to India-Bangladesh border and just about 70 kms from Chittagong Port.

The other issues discussed at the Inter Government Railway Meet included container train services between Bangladesh and India and running of freight trains between the two countries.

The rail officials also decided that the Sanskriti Express run by Indian Railways on the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Ravindranath Tagore would be run to Dhaka sometime after next August.

Indian Railways on May 9 last year launched the special exhibition train at Howrah Station in West Bengal.

The exhibition train has coaches christened as Jeevan Smriti, Gitanjali, Muktadhara and Chitralekha.

The Jiban Smriti provides a glimpse of Tagore's life through photographs, while his songs, poems and letters were put on display in Gitanjali.

Muktadhara takes visitors on a journey through his novels, essays and plays. Chitralekha depicts his paintings, while the fifth coach depicts the last journey of Tagore.

If the general manager (construction) of Northeast Frontier Railway, Ms Vijaya Kanth is to be believed, the Bogibeel rail-cum-road bridge should be ready by 2015, if the current pace of construction work continues. She clarified this in an informal chat with this newspaper today at the Bogibeel Project Officers’ Guest House here, and denied that the bridge superstructure is in for a re-tender. She claimed that the existing global tender stands valid, and only the work awardee remains to be finalised.
She informed that there is every likelihood that the bridge superstructure contract would be awarded in the next seven to ten days by the Railway Board, and that she too is pressing for this at both the Railway ministry and the Railway Board.

In the interaction with the railway official here today, former Dibrugarh MP, Sarbananda Sonowal asked the officials to beautify the bridge and its approaches with suitable tree plantation and measures that would attract visitors and tourists.

Sonowal also suggested that the railways construct a guest house at the Bogibeel area for the benefit of tourists, as the place has vast potential for growth of tourism, given the majesticity of the Brahmaputra (the river is about 8 kms wide there) and the awe-inspiring views of the Himalayas from the place.

He briefed the railway general manager of the railway history of Dibrugarh, and how citizens here crave for an appropriate railway museum. The nation’s second railway line was constructed from Mohanaghat to Dinjan more than a hundred years ago.

Bogibeel project deputy chief engineer, Mohinder Singh said that the Bogibeel site was selected way back in 1927 for a bridge across the Brahmaputra by the then British and Indian railway engineers. The plan then went to the backburner, and survey work on the site was resumed by RITES (Rail India Technical & Engineering Services) in 1967, following persistent demand for a bridge there since 1962 by the Dibrugarh Nagarik Sangha.

As for the bridge construction proper, Ms Vijaya Kanth said all the 47 pillars of the bridge would be ready for the superstructure by the middle of 2013. However, as several pillars towards the north and south banks would be ready in the coming months, work on the superstructure would begin this winter, she said. She said the design of the bridge is the latest in bridge building anywhere in the world. The length of the bridge has been modified and will now be almost five kms long.

Earlier, the length of the bridge was designed to be 4.3 km. The bridge itself would be double decked, with the lower deck having two BG railway tracks and the upper road deck would have three carriageways, with footpath on either side.

Meanwhile, work on the Rangiya – Murkong Selek railway gauge conversion has also commenced. Along with this gauge conversion, Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh would have broad gauge rail connectivity from Harmutty station in Assam. The gauge conversion work on the north bank of the Brahmaputra is likely to be completed by 2014.

This line is very important for NE connectivity of Assam and minor part of AP. I hope it is taken seriously

Traders, residents support Metro's 'monumental' line

Agartala, May 21: The Union Railway Ministry has approved an outlay of Rs 251 crore for laying 14-km railway track to connect Agartala with Akhaura (via Gangasagar) in Bangladesh, official sources said today.

Northeastern Frontier Railway (NFR) is likely to undertake the work for laying tracks by October next year, Mr Kishore Ambuly, Special Secretary to Transport Department, said here.

While the Department of North Eastern region (DoNER) Ministry would pay Rs 105 crore for the construction of rail link on the Indian side, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) will provide Rs 146 crore to carry out the project on the Bangladesh side.

He said that another round of joint survey would be conducted next month to officially notify the proposed alignment. Earlier, a joint team comprising representatives from both sides had conducted a joint survey in November last year.

The NFR sources said the Detailed Project Report (DPR) was almost ready and would be submitted to the Ministry of Railways and the Railway Board for final approval.

The railway extension work from Agaratala to Udaipur in South Tripura district is expected to be completed by December 2012.

The conversion of Broad-Gauge (BG) line from Lumding to Badarpur in Assam has already started and after that the BG line would be extended from Badarpur to Agartala.

The NF railway is also conducting a survey to extend the railways up to Sabroom, southern border town of Tripura, for setting up connectivity with the Chittagong Port in Bangladesh, which is just 70 km from there

Agartala, May 22 (bdnews24.com)—The rail link between Agartala, the capital of Indian north-eastern Tripura state, and Gangasagar in Bangladesh will cost Rs 2.51 billion, official sources have said.

The Indian Railways Northeastern Frontier Railway (NFR) sector was expected to undertake the work for laying the 10-km tracks by October next year, Kishore Ambuly, special secretary to transport department, said Saturday.

"India will bear the entire cost of the project," he added.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) would provide Rs 1.46 billion to construct the 5-km rail link on the Bangladesh side while the Department of North Eastern Region (DoNER) remaining Rs 1.05 billion for the 5-km railway on the Indian side, he added. (Rs 1 equals Tk 1.63)

The satellite map survey had already been completed to avoid densely populated areas in laying the tracks, Ambuly said.

Another round of joint survey would be conducted next month to officially notify the proposed alignment, he added.

Earlier, a joint team comprising representatives from the both sides had conducted a survey in November last year.

Initially, the two sides proposed a rail link between Agartala and Akhuara, but they later on finalised the link between Agartala-Gangasagar to avoid passing of the rail line through densely populated areas near the Akhuara junction.

M V Prasad, deputy chief engineer (construction) of NFR, said the detailed project report (DPR), being prepared by the Indian Railway Construction Company (IRCON), was almost ready and it would be submitted to the Ministry of Railways and Railway Board for final approval.

The NF railway is also conducting a survey to extend railways up to Sabroom, southern border town of Tripura, for setting up connectivity with Chittagong Port in Bangladesh, which is just 72 km from there.

India and Bangladesh have agreed to restore railway links in a bid to enhance people-to-people contact and boost bilateral trade and investments.

The rail services were suspended after the 1965 India-Pakistan war when Bangladesh was then Pakistan's eastern wing.

Railways’ new schedule for rail line to Manipur

Imphal, capital of Manipur, is likely to find a place in the railway map of India in 2016, according to a new schedule drawn up by the Railway Ministry. Delay in execution of therailway projects figured at the meeting convened by the Prime Minister, lastweekend.
Following Manipur ChiefMinister O Ibobi Singh’s dismay at the slow implementation of the project, the railway authorities agreed to supplement equipment and manpower and assured that the railway line up to Tupul would be completed by 2014 and up to Imphal by 2016, sourcessaid. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh called a high-level meeting with Manipur Government and senior CentralMinisters and top officials on Saturday to review implementation of nationalprojects, besides several critical infrastructure, health and educationventures. The meeting was also attended by Defence Minister AK Antony, Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Bijoy Krishna Handique.

O Ibobi, who expressed concern regarding the slow pace of implementation of the railway project, also requested the railways authorities to induct additional manpower and equipment for ensuring stoppage of further slippages.

Regarding suggestions of theMember (Engg) of Railway Board, the Border Road Organisation was advised to strengthen all weak bridges on NH-53 by December 2011 so that the Railways could bring in all required heavy equipment required for the tunnelling work.

The PM also reportedly asked the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to clear all pending DPRs submitted by BRO, and also develop a new proposal for converting NH-53 to a world class road, befitting a road leading to international borders.

The Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed that both proposals were to be included in ‘Phase A’ of the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme and approval of the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure was being obtained. The PM also advised the Ministry to bring the two issues to the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure within June for approval.

Northeastern capitals on rail map by 2017
Agartala, July 2 (IANS)

The Indian Railways will connect all the capitals of northeastern states with the rest of the country by 2017, a senior railway official said here Saturday.

“Under the current mandate of ‘North East Vision 2020’ all the northeastern state capitals would be brought under railway connectivity by 2017 if the land acquisition takes place on time,” Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) General Manager (Construction), Vijaya Kanth told reporters.

The North East Vision 2020 was prepared by the North Eastern Council (NEC) for the development of the region. The eight northeastern states are Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.

Several railway projects now under way in all the eight northeastern states are getting delayed. The main cause is a long period of monsoon which leaves a very short working period from October to March, she said.

“Frequent shutdowns by various political and non-political parties have affected railway construction works and traffic as well as supply of essential goods between the northeastern states and the rest of India,” the official said.

"Due to mountainous locations and terrorism in some parts of the region, technical and security related challenges are also major obstacles for expansion of railway network in the region, bordering China, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Bhutan," said Vijaya Kanth.
The NFR is now laying railway tracks to extend its network up to Sabroom in southern Tripura, 135 km from Agartala, the NFR general manager said.

"After the extension of railway line up to Indian border town Sabroom, it would be easier to access the Chittagong international sea port," Vijaya Kanth stated.

She said that northeast is NFR's priority area and receives government's full support.
"Works are now in full swing to extend railway line from Agartala to border town Sabroom by 2014 and to connect south Tripura's district town Udaipur by March 2012," said the official.

"In the eastern border state of Arunachal Pradesh, capital Itanagar would be connected to Harmuti while the Himalayan state of Sikkim too would not lag behind. Tracks would be laid from Sevoke in neighbouring West Bengal to Rangpo in south Sikkim," she said.

Assam’s main city Guwahati and Tripura capital Agartala are now already connected by the railway network.

Agartala is the newest station of the railways and came up on the country’s rail map in October 2008.

Railway line first entered Assam in 1881 when the Assam Railway and trading companies began construction of a 65-km long metre gauge line from Dibrugargh to Makum collieries in Margherita in northeastern Assam for the sole purpose of transporting tea and coal.

In all, ten rail projects in the northeastern region have been declared as ‘national projects.' Important projects include Bogibeel rail-cum-road bridge in Assam and gauge conversion between southern Assam and Tripura.

The NFR construction chief along with senior railway officials is now on a visit to Tripura to supervise the railway work there.

According to the official, in Nagaland tracks exist up to Dimapur. It would be further extended to capital Kohima. In Manipur, tracks will be extended from Jiribam to capital Imphal.

India plans three strategic rail links near China border

NEW DELHI: India plans to build three strategic rail links close to its disputed border with China, according to a government report that highlights the huge challenges of improving infrastructure in the region.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence report said the three rail lines will link the northeastern state of Assam with neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh state, which China claims in its entirety.

"China is creating a (border) rail network and so should we," committee chairman Satpal Maharaj said.

One of the proposed lines will terminate in Tawang, a heavily-militarised area of Arunachal that borders Bhtuan and Tibet.

The disputed borders between India and China have been the subject of 14 rounds of fruitless talks since 1962, when the two nations fought a brief but brutal war over the issue.

That is a highly overenthusiastic statement!!

NFR can Gauge-convert the tezpur-bhalukpong line (which is well within aru.pr.) and maybe extend it at the most to Bomdilla.

Funds for station building

Source
Quote:
The railways have sanctioned project for a new station building at Jorhat station, after it was announced an adarsh station in February this year, and for a flyover at Na ali railway crossing.

The president of Rail Sewa Suraksha Samiti and a member of divisional railway users’ consultative committee, Jugal Kishore Agarwalla, said this was announced at the committee’s meeting held at the divisional railway manager’s office in Tinsukia on Friday.

The Rail Sewa Suraksha Samiti has been agitating for more than a decade now for the development of the station, long-distance trains from Jorhat and other facilities.

The divisional railway manager, Tinsukia, B.N. Mohapatra, said the construction plans were being worked out and would take some time to be finalised.

“In the meantime, work orders will be given for building two retiring rooms — an AC and a non-AC — at the old Jorhat railway station. The footbridge has also been completed. Work on a second platform is going on and the extension of the first platform is nearing completion,” he said.

Mohapatra said the new station building would come up on the other side and the flyover would also be built. The proposal for a bypass from Mariani to Jorhat, so that long-distance trains could pass through Jorhat, was yet to be sanctioned.

This was a long-standing demand of the samiti, Jorhat Bikash Committee and Upper Assam Chamber of Commerce.

Recently, the Jorhat Bikash Committee had sent a memorandum to railway minister Dinesh Trivedi demanding long-distance trains from Jorhat.

The memorandum said though Jorhat railway station was declared an adarsh station in February this year, no long-distance trains pass through it. Jorhat is the second important city in the state after Guwahati.

Long-distance trains — Rajdhani, Brahmaputra and Kamrup — originating from Dibrugarh and Tinsukia at present pass through Mariani station, which is about 15km from Jorhat town. Mohapatra said they would send the proposal again.

Agarwalla said the samiti has been agitating for long for a number of demands.

The cast iron sleepers in the Mariani-Jorhat-Furkating section of the tracks are being replaced by concrete sleepers in phases. It will make this stretch more durable and allow the trains to run at high speed.

Mohapatra said the passenger earning of the division had increased 43 per cent from last year.

Railway Projects in North Eastern Region

Augmentation/expansion of rail connectivity, including the one in North-Eastern Region is a continuous and ongoing activity. The North-Eastern Region is already connected to the rest of the country and the Golden Quadrilateral (since there is no Golden Triangle) through the Guwahati-Delhi and Guwahati-Howrah routes. As on April 1, 2011, twelve New Line Projects, four Gauge Conversion Projects and two Doubling Projects are under execution in the North-Eastern Region that will improve rail-connectivity. Eight New Line Projects and two Gauge Conversion Projects have been declared as National Projects and a dedicated fund (NERRDF) has been created to implement these projects. Under the New Line Projects all Northeast State Capitals, except that of Sikkim, would get connected by rail. However, Sivok-Rangpo new line project which will provide connectivity to Sikkim, has been taken up.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri K. H. Muniyappa in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
