its sad but true, its like someone built and observation tower and a rollercoaster and stuck them in a tumble dryer until this thing was made, absolute garbage although you might be able to watch events in the main stadium from the veiwing platform, saves spending money on tickets

People that don't like it seem to be conservative dullards. Just saying.

I'm joking, but I don't understand why it's so hard to appreciate this 115 metres of chaos in an otherwise harmoneous park. It's interesting. If you don't like this sort of thing I guess London isn't your ideal city.

I must be a dullard, as I think it is a hideous eyesore.

I like it, looks as if the Eifel Tower attacked the Seattle Space Needle...or something.

So.. your logic is that everything in the world will always be beautiful because the Eiffel Tower was considered ugly at one time by some? There are also things that are considered beautiful when they were built, and are considered ugly now; and there are things that were considered ugly when they were built, and are just as butt ugly today.
Remember how many millions of tourists a year the "Millennium Experience" at the Millennium Dome was predicted to draw? Judged on its own, as a piece of sculpture, this just doesn't do it for me and I'd have to say it borders on kitsch. London is a beautiful, sophisticated city, and I don't want to see it get dragged into the realm of Blackpool, where people come and pay money to stare at bright lights and novelties and eat a pie and chips.

The Eiffel Tower was considered "ugly" because of the material used to build it: exposed iron. Iron as a building material for high rises was still relatively "new" within the past half century. It was considered improper to have exposed iron as an unfinished surface for a structure.
London has a vision for its newer architecture and it is definitely marching to its own drum. So, who knows? Time will tell whether this structure becomes considered "iconic", or not. It is simply not possible to tell without a crystal ball.

Comparing such atrocity with the Eiffel tower is very wrong. One has been designed, the other, well, lacks design. It will take away from the whole Olympic Park. Well, at least it will be easy to dismantle.

The Mellennium Dome now O2 arena is doing very well - infact its one of
worlds top entertainment centers - just bad management at time. http://www.theo2.co.uk/

The Orbit could fit in with other British icons!
