Since when is any piece of art 'useful'? Besides, this is possibly one of the most useful things in the park as it'll generate a huge amount of income.

Exactly. It's arguably more useful than the Mona Lisa, what with it being a viewing tower and a restaurant.

Ugly, well, we'll have to see. Some renders make me think uggghhh, a few others have made me quite excited about the project. Let's at least wait until the thing's built eh?

The Olympic stadium looks very different from the pastel coloured renders we saw. It's much more sleek, light and open. This may prove the same.

The man behind it, the Indian Anish Kapoor is strictly speaking a sculptor. The London Orbit is a gignatesque work of art. True, quite controversial, but slinging mud at it is plain silly.
To call it an 'eye sore' would be naive. Anyway, you are not a professional art critic, so your opinion is irrelevant. Isn't it funny that people behave as if the London Orbit is being built in their backgarden and as if they have a say as to it? Which they obviously don't.

If forum members' opinions didn't matter, there'd be little need for the forum at all.

No not everyone is an art critic, engineer or some form of professional to be in a 'suited position' to judge. But the success of this installation as a tourist attraction will, in fact, be down to how many of us 'Joe/Jo Public' rate this enough to go near enough to go on it. I would imagine you're very unlikely to go up the lift to the observation space if you think it's an eyesore.

Here is a scan showing my attempt to work out the structure of the tower from pics & vids. It turns out it consists of a single, unbroken entity that weaves & winds within itself from the base to the viewing platform. It was done out of curiosity as well as checking the feasablility of creating a 3D Google Earth model of it.

Just Realised I made a slight error (check the base of the orange bit)

An 'artist' scribbles on a piece of paper - it too is art?

So it is only a piece of art when you like the look of it?

How modest of you.

I think a lot of people do not realise that this wasn't commissioned by LOCOG but more like a piece of art gifted to the park designed by the Artist Anish Kapoor and privately funded by Lakshmi Mittal the steel tycoon (one of the richest men in the UK). it just happens to be more useful then a normal piece of Art as you can go up it and it provides a viewing platform at the top. But as with most modern art it is very subjective, I do however so far like the contrast that it gives to the park.
